Some footage of Dalkey, County Dublin, Ireland, taken in 1957. It starts in black and white and then moves to colour. I think the later parts are from the early sixties actually. I got a copy of this on VHS some years ago. I converted it to DVD and have now converted it for KZbin. All these conversions have taken their toll on picture quality. If anyone knows where the original film is, let me know. It was probably shot on 8mm. I would like to do a direct conversion to preserve the original quality and I'd like to know something about the cameraman/narrator and give him a credit.

I can confirm this was shot in 1957 by Lar dunne, and was was voiced over by a gentle man called Toby Bailey who was involved in dramatics etc who lived across the road from Finnegans pub in Dalkey, this movie was lent kindly by Lar to one of his neighbours a few years ago and was then copied without his permission, Lar has no problem with people viewing and enjoying it on youtube etc, he is just disappointed he was not asked in the matter, these are his words yesterday when i had a chat with him, he then kindly pointed out my uncle Peter who is seen on a cart with a white connemara pony traveling through the main street! Thanks a million Lar

Yes I think I recognize Tony Baileys voice he was a gentleman he helped out with Dalkey Celtic and we christened him ''Mack the Knife'' as this was his party piece coming home in the bus or over a few jars

An amazing piece of fotage, when i first saw this i thought it was shot & narrated by Larry Mullen from Patricks road in Dalkey, as he spent his life photographing dalkey, he sadly died around 1980 and worse still his life time of photographing and collecting pictures of Dalkey etc got trown out, and it also sounded like his voice, but then i remenbered his good friend Larry Dunne had similar hobbies and was more interested in films, i am meeting up with his Nephew Jonathan for a pint at the weekend so i am gonna find out for sure, Lar is still going strong so i will ask him about it! The farm yard he mentions & shows at 2:47 just off castle street is still there as its my familys and all the Dunnes specially Paddy Dunne Lars brother were welcome guests! Anyone notice the old tram that Horace Porter stayed in some times?

Yes it was Larry Dunne alright. He's a neighbour of mine in Begnets Villas, Dalkey. He's in great form and will be 80 in a month or two. I asked him about the film and he thinks he has an original copy somewhere at home. I can put you in touch if you like.

Sad to report that Larry Dunne passed away peacefully on Thursday. He was in good health and great form up to the end. I was chatting to him out on his walk on Wednesday.

The cameraman was Larry Dunne, a Dalkey native who was a friend of my father. Larry was mad about film making in the 60s and would often visit our house to get advice from Dad who was very active with a group called Irish film Makers, a semi pro group making documentaries. I suspect most of the footage is from the 60's as I recognize some of the people from that time including my Dad. I think Larry Dunne worked in the GPO.

That is my Dad, Reg Hobbs, speaking to canon Rafter at 9.01. We lived in Barnacoille Park, at the end of Church road at the time. I was in that Corpus Christi procession with my sisters.

@1.09 where the woman is feeding the stray dog, the wall on the left belongs to David Langan. The two houses on the opposite side of the road were belong to Harry and Breda Hewson (house on left) and the other one was belong to Ned and Pat Smiley.

It is possible that some of the footage may have been shot in 1957 but some, at least, is later. The Austin A40 driven by the curate, has the registration RYI 55. This is a 1959 registration.

This is brilliant. I lived at 60 Castle Street until 1957 when it became Byrnes. The clip brings back some great memories, especially the swimming gala at Bulloch. I was a member of Dalkey swimming club along with my sister Mary , Vera Roache (who lived in Tram Terrace) and the late Mickey Fanning was our coach. Any chance of getting a copy of the DVD so that I can have a bit of Dalkey here in Australia? John Toner

Dev and religion - what a combo, more lethal than Salah and Firmino! Those hymns are still in my head - indelible. Hearing the Hail Marys being rattled off reminds me of rosaries long ago. 63 years is a long time in a country's history yet the views from Dalkey and Killiney Hills, Bulloch and across to Dalkey Island from Coliemore Road still as spectacular as ever. Really enjoyed watching this but glad it's history too.

Hi John, I'd like to get in touch with you about this video but can't seem to message you from your account page. The thumbnail of the video shows Select Stores (as it was then), but I can't find where it is in your video. I'm looking for old film or an image of the shop right next door to it, as a Christmas gift for the owner and I was hoping we could get in touch regarding the film.
