Warren Moon and WR Drew Hill connect on a big play for the Oilers. As well as the Cowboys defense is playing, their offense hasn't put Houston away just yet. Video includes postgame scores and interviews from around the league.

The fact that Warren Moon lasted more than 15 years after watching this game is a frigging miracle

I wish the Texans would have been named the Oilers. I miss that team. Their helmet logo was one of the best, too.

Despite the loss to the Rams in the playoffs, I thought bringing in Paul Hackett from SanFran the next year complicated things. Landry's offense was good enough and Jim Shofner was a very good offensive assistant and well liked by the players. Shofner ended up as offensive coordinator in St. Louis. And Hershel was on the horizon.

It really wasn't until about 1987 that the Oilers would actually start turning thing around when Jerry Glanville came along.

This game was a defensive battle between the Cowboys vs Oilers back in the 1985 NFL season

As an 8 year old, this was one of the first NFL games that I watched while understanding the rules, but I was still somewhat learning the ropes. Apparently, so was the Oilers offensive line. 12 sacks! What's astonishing is that 99% of o-lines on any given Sunday have few if any perennial All-Pros. This Houston line had not one but two Hall of Famers (Mike Munchak and Bruce Matthews). And they were protecting Hall of Famer Warren Moon, meaning that there were three H o Fers on this offense! Of course, they were all fairly young, and they were going against a Hall of Fame coach in Tom Landry, who's Doomsday defense still had several key components in Randy White, Ed Jones, and Harvey Martin. It's unbelievable to see Landry and a still largely intact Doomsday defense chase around Warren Moon with Munchak and Matthews not really knowing what to do. Classic H o F vs H o F, in this case the old guard getting the best of the new guard. The Halftime is an awesome time capsule too, with Dick Butkus, Don Shula, Paul Brown (whose pro football relevance dates back to the 40's), and others included and still very much part of the NFL landscape. The broadcast team of former Cowboys voice and former nemesis (as a Steeler) Terry Bradshaw is interesting too. Two former Heisman Running backs Tony Dorsett vs Mike Rozier adds an interesting twist too. Classic NFL Today (my favorite as a youngster) Halftime combined with a Hall of Fame studded couple of rosters, plus notable broadcast team makes this an awesome find. The Tom Landry-Warren Moon coach vs QB matchup is just too cool, and had the latter been in his prime, fewer sacks certainly, but who knows, maybe similar outcome.

The Cowboys didn't lose in the Astrodump until 1991. Also won there in '74 and '82.

the commercial at 46:20 is a rip-off of the old Oak Ridge Boys 'American Made' song.

I was at this game! They killed Moon and Dorsett killed them. Was and still am a big Cowboys fan! I think Moon got sacked 12 times. It was a least 60% Cowboys fan at the dome!

The Cowboys increased their lead, in the second half of this game, to 10-0, on their first offensive posession in the second half of this game. The biggest plays made on a 7 play 60 yard scoring drive, was Danny White's 32 yard pass completetion to tight end Doug Cosbie and Oilers cornerback Steve Brown, who jumped offsides on Septien's 40 yard field goal attempt that was missed. Brown's offsides jump gave the Cowboys 5 addtional yards and Septien made a 35 yard field goal instead. The Oilers offense finally scored a touchdown, when quarterback Warren Moon completed a quick pass to wide receiver Dru Hill, who raced to the end zone for a 57 yard catch and run. The momentum remained in the Oilers favor on special teams, when Frank Bush blocked a punt attempted by Cowboys punter Mike Saxon and the ball was recovered by Bush's teammate Mike Akiu. The Oilers tied the game 10-10 when kicker Tony Zendejas made a 33 yard field goal. Rafael Septien missed his fourth field goal attempt of 36 yards, after Cowboys cornerback, Ron Fellows got his second interception off of Moon, and the Cowboys fourth in this game, which was the fifth and final turnover, committed by the Oilers offense. Warren Moon was sacked five more times by the Cowboys defense, resulting in 27 more lost yards totalling 12 sacks and 85 yards in lost offense overall. Kicker Tony Zendejas missed a 37 yard field goal that would have temporarily given the Oilers a 13-10 lead. The Cowboys and Oilers remained tied 10-10 until there was 2:15 left in regulation. The Cowboys would have their final offensive possession start at the 25 yard line. Running back Tony Dorsett had one of the best games of his career, 23 carries for 159 yards. Fullback James Jones, caught a 35 yard pass from Danny White before Dorsett's 31 yard run, to the Oilers 1 yard line, to set up quarterback Danny White's, game winning 1 yard touchdown pass, to tight end, Fred Cornwell, concluding a 75 yard scoring drive. The Cowboys 12 sacks of Oilers quarterback Warren Moon, consisted of eight by four players, two each by defensive tackles, Johnny Dutton and Randy White. Defensive End Ed ''Too Tall Jones'' and Safety Victor Scott also had two sacks apiece.Three other Cowboys defensive players had one sack each, Kevin Brooks, Dextor Clinkscale, and Eugene Lockhart. The last sack was one-half sack each by Mike Hegman and Jim Jeffcoat. 17-10 Cowboys!!! This game was the Cowboys third straight win over the Oilers, in The Astrodome, aka The Lone Star State battle.

David Steinle SNF didn’t exist in 1985. It’s wasn’t until the late 80’s that the NFL played a Sunday night game.

@@handyfix2952 ln additional to Monday Night Football ABC, occasionally would have Special Sunday, Thursday, and Friday Edition games as well. The difference is there were no Sunday Night games every week, until the 1987 season.
