I grew up in Buffalo routing for the Bills. But, I always sung "Houston Oilers #1" right along with the Oilers fans and cheered 'em on. How could you not? That was when football fun and just football itself was at its peak. People have changed too much {and not for the better} to ever see something like that again. Thanks for the memories Bum!

The Luv Ya Blue era was so intense during that time that our Middle School sang the Oilers fight song before the 1978 Monday Night Football game against Miami in the Astrodome! That whole school shook! Our new football league, which just got back off the ground this year (Jan '21) due to the pandemic has named our first innaugural team the Houston Bayou City Blues in honor of the Columbia Blue jerseys / helmets worn by the Oilers during the 70's. At 55, I still remember the intensity, excitement, fun of that season and the one after. Dante, Earl and Bum were all crucial to its success. Thank you for this video!

One thing many people dont realize is that Bum was a WWII Marine combat veteran with the "US Marine Raiders" which was the American version of the British Commandos that fought in the Second World War. He took part, like Tom Landry did in the Air Corps, in some of the most savage fighting in the South Pacific during the war. That era of coaches, coaching is now long gone with Bum's passing.

As a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I enjoyed the games between the Steelers and the Oilers. Those were memorable games between two teams that displayed sportsmanship, dignity, and mutual respect for each other. The late Bum Phillips served his country in World War II. I never had the pleasure of meeting the man but he was indeed a Cowboy, Coach, and a Devout Christian. Bum Phillips got a raw deal from Houston. He deserved better. Yes he was very close to his players. He loved his players. His players played hard for him and even harder when they were hurt. Read Dan Pastorini's book. The Oilers did not do much after Bum's firing. Rest in Peace O.A. "Bum" Phillips. His memory be eternal and yes Luv Ya Blue!!!

@@micahalexis26 I saw evidence of that in another video, where John Banaszak and Dwight White of Pittsburgh spoke very well of the Oilers. As a kid, I was a Steelers fan, and idolized Terry Bradshaw. Looking back now, I almost wish the Oilers had won in 1978, just so they could go on to beat Dallas in Superbowl for 1979. I have to think a lot of Steelers and their fans would have loved to see Houston take the trophy over Dallas. Plus, Dante would have gotten the respect he always should have had.

It's good that NFL Films paid tribute to such a unique head coach. I was watching quite a few of those playoff games during the late 1970s when the Houston Oilers were at their best. The Oilers were a fun team to watch. I'm glad to know that the Houston Oilers and Pittsburgh Steelers had such mutual respect for each other despite being bitter divisional rivals. That's extremely rare. That's sportsmanship at its best. I now understand the love the city of Houston had for their Oilers back in the day.

But we won on pure determination. Ever since then and then in that hard fought 1982 SD vs. Miami (41-38) playoff game I've had empathy for the Chargers. Like the Oilers, they've had great teams but never could get to the big game. So much wasted talent. And even today the Chargers have a great team but just bad luck.
