It's the battle of Texas, as the Oilers go against the Cowboys. Good pregame report by Bob Trumpy, as he interviews former Cowboys WR Bob Hayes from prison. Earl Campbell has a big game for Houston, with a spectacular touchdown run.

What an incredible memory! Even though it ended badly for my team, I so cherish the memories from this game. My family celebrated Thanksgiving at my grandparents house. We had a wonderful meal and enjoyed each other’s company. Then as the game was starting, we all gathered in the living room, huddled around the wooden-boxed console TV-our family divided right down the middle-each side taunting the other throughout the back and forth nature of the game. Many of those family members have passed since then, but seeing this game refreshed their memory in my mind and warmed my heart. Thanks for posting.

Always spent Thanksgiving at my grandparents' home, too. My grandfather's last one was 1971. He died suddenly the following August. The last one there was 1996. Grandmother (or MaMa as we all called her) died the following May, one week before turning 92. And yes, we called my grandfather PaPa.

As a lifelong Houstonian and Houston Oilers' (RIP) fan, I remember this game like it was yesterday. This was during the height of the "Luv Ya Blue" era and this victory over the Cowboys was definitely one of the highlights. The "79 Oilers would finish 11-5 and, for the second year in a row, make it to the AFC championship game where, sadly, they would lose to the defending champion Steelers, yet again, on a controversial call that took away a Mike Renfro TD. Btw, this was the play that led to instant replay. Thanks for posting.

@@g.r.x.racer-1737 Maybe they cheated, but the Oilers were so crippled without Pastorini, Campbell, and Burrough AND played a hard fought wild card game the week before while the Chargers were on a bye. PLUS, it was a short week for the Oilers. No excuses for the Chargers.

When you watch this 3 game killer stretch for the Cowboys (a Monday night loss to the Eagles, a Sunday afternoon shellacking at the hands of the Redskins and this one vs the Oilers), it was all in 10 days. Hollywood Henderson is gone. You then realize Roger only has 4 more games remaining in his career after this. An end of a golden age for sure. Thank you for not only posting the game but the painful pregame interview with Henderson which adds perspective to the events, outcome and impact of this game.

40+ years and I never get tired of these old games. The Oilers might have advanced to the Super Bowl had Pastorini and Campbell not been out later with injuries. The Cowboys would suffer heartbreak on Dec 30th at the hands of the Rams as Staubach could not pull off a last second miracle. Roger and also & Cliff Harris would retire after this season & although they lost their last game, they still went out on top of their game. Penalties were quite frequent in this game.

honestly, the lead in music....so good. And Gumbel was as good as it gets as the studio host. Don't think there was ever a better voice...and if so, it was from the same era and over on CBS. What a great era, too bad we didn't have the football package available back then. The first years after the Mel Blount rule was an amazing time because the game started trending towards the passing game. I was born into San Diego Chargers season seats and i was 9 when Don Coryell showed up and nobody benefited more from that rule than offenses predicated on the forward pass and QB. It was fun to watch and has been fun to watch the league materialize into what it is today as far as the passing game. I think they have took the rules way too far, but i get it.

Tom Landry went to court to testify support for Bob Hayes as did the Cowboy's organization. Looking back, five years was a pretty tough sentence if it was a first offense. I don't know all the circumstances but a suspended sentence probably would have sufficed. But it was Texas back then.

That’s revisionist history. If the Renfro play was called a Touchdown it would have just tied the game, not given them some insurmountable lead. It would have made the game more interesting for sure but in reality the Steelers were dominating that game and should have had a bigger lead at the time and even with a Renfro Touchdown at that point an Oiler win was unlikely. I’m no Steeler fan but that game is unfairly looked back as a blown call away from an Oilers win which was not the case.

This game is a chapter from the book "How to Destroy A Great Running Back with Overwork". Bum was a good coach but he did run Earl into the ground and shortened his career.

I watched this game. And I learned even more about Earl Campbell from a friend. He loved Earl Campbell since his Texas Longhorns day. He was thrilled when Earl played for the NO Saints, his favorite team. But man, Campbell couldn't catch a break. Astro Turf at the Astrodome. And Astro Turf at the Superdome.

This was the first time the Oilers played at Dallas on Thanksgiving, allowing a national TV audience to see the two Texas teams go at it. It happened again in 1988 (which this time was not a sellout, so DFW and surrounding Texas markets couldn't see the game). Until cross-flex became a thing in 2014, the Texans were effectively prohibited from playing the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. This was because previously, CBS had the Thanksgiving game wherein Detroit or Dallas was hosting an AFC team. The AFC South and NFC East always paired up whenever Fox had the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. The Texans can now play at Dallas on Thanksgiving, but an AFC team at Dallas game has never been on Fox on Thanksgiving (nor at Detroit).

Notably, of the 8 teams who were scheduled to play at Dallas in 2020, Cleveland had gone longer without playing on Thanksgiving than the other 7 teams, but that game was still not scheduled for Thanksgiving.

Failure of Oilers to gain homefield advantage 1978-80 was such a killer for the Luv You Blue era. Well, look at the San Diego Chokers 1979-82. 2 teams I loved so much in Jr. High that never went anywhere. So ironic San Diego does not even have a football team anymore. What is a Titan?

Back then, NBC had the AFC package and CBS had the NFC package. There was NO FOX. IF, it was an inter conference game, the home team would be on the opposite network. With Dallas (NFC) being the home team, NBC broadcasted the game.
