When I was still living in Dallas, I had a long dry spell in 2002 and entertained myself several times by taking the DART from one end of the line to the other. It was funny seeing people who tried to get free rides because they didn't take tickets every time but would ask for them periodically--the excuses people would make and they were thrown off at the next stop! It usually wasn't a surprise who they were, either!

It's astonishing for me: The Dallas Light Rail seems to make use of genuine bells for ringing alerts, contrary to the Los Angeles light rail vehicles where there obviously electronic sound generating is used! Sounds really good, creates a kind of nostalgic memories of the long gone steam locomotive era.

Keep in mind, much the reason the trains go slow in the downtown area is traffic congestion. There is no gate protection downtown to stop vehicle traffic from running red lights. The maximum allowed speed on the system, depending on grade separation from traffic is 65 mph...which is blindingly fast compared to being stuck on I-75 during rush hour.

To correct you both the max cars we have coupled is 3. You're counting the 3 sections of 1 car as 3 cars which is not the case. Those 3 sections comprise of just 1 car. The Orange Line will probably never use 3 cars as it's a low ridership run and is mostly only utilized by people who are simply waiting on a Green or Red line train. ^_^

Also, to everyone commenting that this system is slow, it's only slow in the Dallas City Center. Once you get out of that, the trains will reach speeds of up to 65 MPH. Part of what makes DART so cool is that the line is incredibly versatile. This video only shows the city center, which actually contains all 4 lines. Most stations are a few miles apart, so once you get to that area, the trains are very fast between stations.

Well, these trains were shot in downtown. A lot of rail systems in downtown areas are slow. Most rail systems seem to have a slow zone. Have you seen Chicago's L trains move through the downtown loop? The passengers could get out and crawl faster. : ) Also, hoteldennis is right, checkout the pace in Baltimore. There is one part in this video, in the Cityplace subway station, where the train is leaving the station. Once they are in that 3 mile long tunnel, or elevated, the speed is 65+mph.

The first train had a total of 9 cars, usually they only have 6. Is there a certain line that has more cars, perhaps the Red Line?
@RRansomSmith
@RRansomSmith 4 жыл бұрын
You mean 1-3 cars. Each single car has 3 sections, the middle being low floor for ADA.

The Green Line. As I understand it the Orange Line will have 9 cars as well. Especially in 2014 when it serves DFW International.

3 cars, not 9. Each car has 3 sections.

If you want slow, come to Baltimore.

Addison will eventually be served by the Cotton Belt Line, which will be an east-west alignment that will connect Grapevine to George Bush Station in Plano. It will be a commuter line, more like the TRE or A-Train.

At least the dart rail is not a boondoggle like they are dealing with in hawaii and California.

It really isn't. The economic growth that Texas sees just from DART is absolutely astounding. Then you have the DCTA A-Train and the TRE and the economic growth spurred by those systems is amazing.

Actually Dart is losing more than what is earning. It would have been better if the company got involve in setting rail along or close to 635 to reduce traffic. More people would rather ride train than sit in traffic.

@@jeSuisbar true but transit is always going to lose more then it makes every form of transit is heavily subsidized just look at how much money we pour into roads

It's not subway. It's light rail (trolley).

whall 85 miles of light rail might sound like a lot to many people Dallas I guess is a very spread out area were it would say atleast 300 would gt to the point many would say they no longer ned to own a a car what the city around 400 square miles??
@madpistol
@madpistol 9 жыл бұрын
david levine between bus and train service, you really do not need to own a car. My wife and I went from Richardson to the Dallas City Center in about 30 minutes on DART rail, which on weekdays, is actually quicker than by car at peak hours. What's even cooler is the city center actually routes all 4 train lines into the same track, so there's no changing platforms; it's all the same platform. It's a very modern and efficient setup

Youre not alone ^^. I sometimes ask myself if they designed these older cars that they look scary so that people really want to be out of the way when they come. Could it be like that?
