Yes indeed, PhrAntione. Spittin the rellalties of one our many struggles of comin up in the ghetto, but without glorifying the drugs and other destructive factors which work against our people. This is the true results of it. And as far as hip- hop goes, Dolemite was rappin. Hip-hop was born out of funk. That is why early hip-hop always sampled funk to make their beats. Funk is hip-hop. Rap is just funk speeded up. I used tell these youngstas, Superfly was gangsta rap!!!
@morbidlyboreddr.strangelov3420
@morbidlyboreddr.strangelov3420 3 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Harren No not white, you must be stupid. Gil Scott was both a lyricist and a musician. Where modern rap and hip hop are strictly lyricist, the beats are not made by them, it's their sound engineers. Gil Scott WAS his own engineer, He was a musician with lots of understanding of jazz, funk, blues and soul. Played guitar, piano and flute (and God knows what else). I like rap as much as the next guy, but calling this "rap before rap" is like calling an orchestra, a hoe-down because they both use violin/fiddle.

i want to say that if you are a white kid growing up in a white world listening to white voices tell you what the white world is, and also listening to those same white voices tell you what the black world is, then the first time you hear gil scott heron tell you in a black voice what the black world feels like, you might have some trouble adjusting the new uncomfortable truths - this is good, this is progress - keep listening, stay humble -

@@Heelo_0 they never said it was. they’re actually encouraging people to listen to gil scott heron for a different perspective on the black experience. dont look at someone mention race and shut down or disregard what they’re saying. talking about race and things like that isnt bad, you just have to make sure it’s appropriate and youre not talking on things you dont know. with the section at the end where heron is reciting a poem their comment isnt out of place imo. im not mad but like cmon now lmao

As a product of '87, you took the time to teach me manners, wisdom, patience, persistence, and knowledge. It's a blessing to have an old soul as a result of being your first grandchild. May your spirit boogaloo to the bass lines of every classic before my time that placed me ahead of my time. The memories of you and that Canadian 95 proof are still fresh. He was groovin' And that was when he coulda sworn The room was movin' But that was only in his mind He was sailin' He never really seemed to notice Vision failin' 'Cause that was all part of the high Sweat was pourin' He couldn't take it The room was exploding He might not make it. Angel Dust Please, children would you listen. Angel Dust Just ain't where it's at. Angel Dust You won't remember what you're Missin', but down some dead end streets There ain't no turnin' back. They were standin' Everybody in a circle The whole family Listening to the preacher's words Sis was cryin' She alone held all the secrets 'Bout his dyin' Tears fallin' to earth Maybe her fault He was so trusting God only knew why They was dustin'! Angel Dust Please children would you listen. Angel Dust Just ain't where it's at. Angel Dust You won't remember what you're Missin', but down some dead end streets There ain't no turnin' back.

Spent 1968 with Gil at LINCOLN U. In rural Pennsyvania . Was not a good fit for him and he moved on .He was very generous with his time and helped us all gr0w . You can get real feel for the times from RED BULL interview with Brian Jackson . We all hung out in theater building which had language labs at one end. Gil was true poet. Brian was the music . But by time I graduated in 1971 Gil had first album out . The rest was HIStory. Love "angel Dust".

Some are asking the question "how did he get caught up in the very thing he warned us about"? Perhaps he was referring to the struggle he was already in. (Me and the Devil by Gil Scott Heron) We all deal with something. I hope that he found peace in God. RIP GREAT ONE
