Bought a new D-18 for $325 in October 1969 the day I was discharged from military service. It aged like a Stradivarius. Plays and sounds better than many vintage 28s, 35s, and 45s I played in several different body styles. The tone is warm and the volume and bass response are very close to the D-28. Gave it to my son last year and got a 000-28, which is more suited to string bending for blues. There is no rational reason not to buy a D-18. I taught my grandson that you can never own too many guitars.

I recently got myself a real one from the early 1970s and it's an amazingly good guitar. There are some nice J-50s on Reverb. The one with the black guard that shows the bracing through the top wood is just like mine. They're worth the €1500.- you pay for for them used.

Honestly, my reason is that I already owned a Martin D-18 in the 1970's. I didn't like it and so I sold it. Decades later I decided I would never buy another Martin. Since realized it is just dreads that I disdain. So I have an Martin OM and a Martin 000 12-fret now and really do like them quite a lot.
@davidburch41652 жыл бұрын
In the past I went through four dreadnoughts, including a Gibson, that soured me on the type. But I sat down at the local shop and played a D-18 and a Collings D-1 (pretty much the same guitar, but nearly twice the cost). The D-18 sustained longer and had less of that dreadnought muddle in the overtones. Now there is a new D-18 on the rack next to the OM and OO Martins I liked from the start. I just hope I live long enough and retain my hearing long enough to "play in" the D-18.
@MeneerHerculePoirot3 жыл бұрын
Many prize pre-war Martin dreads for good reason. The benchmark for me is the 1st CSN album. Stills is holding one on the cover. The LP was released in 69. Martin sales went through the roof. In order to keep the lifetime warranty they had to thicken the bracing. The pre-CSN Martins sound much better. For about 10 years the quality just wasn't there.
@davidburch41652 жыл бұрын
I have heard that 1970s Martins are to be avoided. There was a rumor that they had suffered a fire in their wood warehouse. I have always heard that story about the warranty relative to Gibson guitars, and I had a 1971 J-50 that proved it true. What an overweight, over-everything that old clunker was!

Those are all good reasons 😆. I tell myself (and my wife tells me) the 28 is all I need too. But then there’s the matter of the Duesenberg Alamo lap steep with hand benders, a telecaster with sweet pedals, a couple amps, the upright bass and a new Collings mandolin. Plus European mics and necessary components on the signal chain. Stringed obsessions are no laughing matter. Good luck to you sir, and I appreciate the love for Garcia

Geez. I’m not worthy of your list, but I have a HD-35 and a 000-15M, but…….my first guitar I ever owned was given to me by my dad. He bought it brand new, recorded albums and travelled around the world with it. A 1959 00-18G. Martin does not make it anymore. It was stolen and my heart went with it. The HD-35 was to fill the emptiness my home felt without a Martin in it. I’m on the fence now for a 000-18. I don’t need another dreadnaught. I beyond love the 000-15M, but I want to see and hear that beautiful mahogany and spruce combo again.
