@alfredfarber33857 жыл бұрын
Bought a new D-18 for $325 in October 1969 the day I was discharged from military service. It aged like a Stradivarius. Plays and sounds better than many vintage 28s, 35s, and 45s I played in several different body styles. The tone is warm and the volume and bass response are very close to the D-28. Gave it to my son last year and got a 000-28, which is more suited to string bending for blues. There is no rational reason not to buy a D-18. I taught my grandson that you can never own too many guitars.

Is that a 314CE Taylor? I had one come to me for new frets and a set up. A proper set up on these involves throwing away the synthetic saddle (that not only sounds crappy but is also badly intonated) and making a new saddle from high grade bone or ebony. I used ebony on this particular guitar and the results were stellar. It already has an ebony bridge and pins, so why not ebony saddle? Oh and chuck the elixirs and install a set of Newtone roundcore heritage series strings. Do that for your Martins as well. You will thank me. ;-)

@gingerbeer9146 жыл бұрын
I tried it, and you're absolutely right. IF you buy a D-18, you should buy a 1939 Authentic. It's the best mahogany dreadnought available. The Clarence White D-28 is a rosewood guitar that is louder than a normal D-28, but that also goes for this D-28M Custom Artist Edition, which is made of Madagascar rosewood. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqKzeGlnlKxnnrM But... there are only 100 of them. The timbre of these guitars is always different from a mahogany guitar of course. If you have only good rosewood guitars you have every reason in the world to buy a good mahogany guitar, because certain songs demand mahogany for the more nasal mid tones. If you can afford it: go for the best!
@Bluelightcheaphotel3 жыл бұрын
Those are all good reasons 😆. I tell myself (and my wife tells me) the 28 is all I need too. But then there’s the matter of the Duesenberg Alamo lap steep with hand benders, a telecaster with sweet pedals, a couple amps, the upright bass and a new Collings mandolin. Plus European mics and necessary components on the signal chain. Stringed obsessions are no laughing matter. Good luck to you sir, and I appreciate the love for Garcia

There's two reasons not listed, they are over priced and you can get a just as good or better Guild D-55. Guild D-55, D-40,Gibson Hummingbird. Martin and Taylor are too expensive for what you get, both are nice guitars but I'd much rather have a D-55 Guild or Gibson Hummingbird or Songwriter. $10,000 for a guitar made recently is unacceptable unless it's made of gold and you won't find a Gibson or Guild in the standard catalog for that price but there's plenty of Martin's for that and much more.

@patrickclark33375 жыл бұрын
@@Tonetwisters Not all are "overpriced" mostly what is popular and Taylor and Martin are popular. #1 sellers of acoustic guitars. You can get a great solid wood guitar made in the US like a Guild D-40 for $1000ish. The only Martin in that price range is a laminate or has a richlite neck/fretboard or its made in China. Same with Taylor. Guild are making a comeback but they're priced decent right now. Sure Martin D-28 or 45 appreciates in value but they start out way over priced to begin with. I will stick with Guild, the D-55 will give an overpriced D-45 a run for the money. $7k-40k? Not worth half that, D-55 $3500 worth every penny.

I have been avoiding this video because I had just purchased a D18 and didn’t want to hear anything bad about it... glad I watched 😂

Honestly, my reason is that I already owned a Martin D-18 in the 1970's. I didn't like it and so I sold it. Decades later I decided I would never buy another Martin. Since realized it is just dreads that I disdain. So I have an Martin OM and a Martin 000 12-fret now and really do like them quite a lot.

In the past I went through four dreadnoughts, including a Gibson, that soured me on the type. But I sat down at the local shop and played a D-18 and a Collings D-1 (pretty much the same guitar, but nearly twice the cost). The D-18 sustained longer and had less of that dreadnought muddle in the overtones. Now there is a new D-18 on the rack next to the OM and OO Martins I liked from the start. I just hope I live long enough and retain my hearing long enough to "play in" the D-18.
