Bought a new D-18 for $325 in October 1969 the day I was discharged from military service. It aged like a Stradivarius. Plays and sounds better than many vintage 28s, 35s, and 45s I played in several different body styles. The tone is warm and the volume and bass response are very close to the D-28. Gave it to my son last year and got a 000-28, which is more suited to string bending for blues. There is no rational reason not to buy a D-18. I taught my grandson that you can never own too many guitars.

Is that a 314CE Taylor? I had one come to me for new frets and a set up. A proper set up on these involves throwing away the synthetic saddle (that not only sounds crappy but is also badly intonated) and making a new saddle from high grade bone or ebony. I used ebony on this particular guitar and the results were stellar. It already has an ebony bridge and pins, so why not ebony saddle? Oh and chuck the elixirs and install a set of Newtone roundcore heritage series strings. Do that for your Martins as well. You will thank me. ;-)

@@krashunburn I hear you. I got my first Martin 2 years ago for around 3000£ I chose between 20 Martins and found the one I wanted, so I'm new to giving out this kind of money, though I've been playing for 40+ years, and selling and doing repairs and more. That being said, when you show up with a brand name guitar it helps avoiding stupid discussions of gear, and people pay attention to your playing instead, and for that reason it adds practical value. the same goes for electrics. I mod and build to my own likings, but if I have to make an impression in a situation, I'm likely to bring a brandname guitar, because it shuts up the snobs and let's me play FWIW

Are they expensive? Yes. But not really in the amount of enjoyment you can get out of it... Buy one and depending on your age you might own it 40 or 50 years. So even if you spend $5000 on it that's 8-10 bucks a month... Or 27 cents a day. I know my guitar is worth more than 27 cents a day to me.

I tried it, and you're absolutely right. IF you buy a D-18, you should buy a 1939 Authentic. It's the best mahogany dreadnought available. The Clarence White D-28 is a rosewood guitar that is louder than a normal D-28, but that also goes for this D-28M Custom Artist Edition, which is made of Madagascar rosewood. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqKzeGlnlKxnnrM But... there are only 100 of them. The timbre of these guitars is always different from a mahogany guitar of course. If you have only good rosewood guitars you have every reason in the world to buy a good mahogany guitar, because certain songs demand mahogany for the more nasal mid tones. If you can afford it: go for the best!

Those are all good reasons 😆. I tell myself (and my wife tells me) the 28 is all I need too. But then there’s the matter of the Duesenberg Alamo lap steep with hand benders, a telecaster with sweet pedals, a couple amps, the upright bass and a new Collings mandolin. Plus European mics and necessary components on the signal chain. Stringed obsessions are no laughing matter. Good luck to you sir, and I appreciate the love for Garcia

@@wombat8622 like you can buy 1986 stratocaster for 1000-2000k$ or you can buy super new exp mexican or china one model new 2016+ ..wich one u prefer? and yeah...if u are looking for gibsons ..they cost really a lot..but fenders and ibanez are cheaper..that not mean they are bad , fenders are more into singles, ibanez more in humbuckers if we talk about acoustic instruments...there is really high prices yea :)) but anyway u can get great japan wood and really short explanation if old guitar look good and sound good..that means shes survive like 20 or 40 years...when u buy new one..u never no how long she will live ..like mb half year :))

There's two reasons not listed, they are over priced and you can get a just as good or better Guild D-55. Guild D-55, D-40,Gibson Hummingbird. Martin and Taylor are too expensive for what you get, both are nice guitars but I'd much rather have a D-55 Guild or Gibson Hummingbird or Songwriter. $10,000 for a guitar made recently is unacceptable unless it's made of gold and you won't find a Gibson or Guild in the standard catalog for that price but there's plenty of Martin's for that and much more.

Yeh-yeh. ALL good guitars are overpriced. Been at this for 57 years +, and they have never been cheap. Buy what you want, want what you like. Most will hold their value and even increase. If you can afford it, buy it. Play it. Enjoy it. Most of all, thank the Lord Jesus for it. And play a song of two for Him once in a while ...

@@Tonetwisters Not all are "overpriced" mostly what is popular and Taylor and Martin are popular. #1&#2 sellers of acoustic guitars. You can get a great solid wood guitar made in the US like a Guild D-40 for $1000ish. The only Martin in that price range is a laminate or has a richlite neck/fretboard or its made in China. Same with Taylor. Guild are making a comeback but they're priced decent right now. Sure Martin D-28 or 45 appreciates in value but they start out way over priced to begin with. I will stick with Guild, the D-55 will give an overpriced D-45 a run for the money. $7k-40k? Not worth half that, D-55 $3500 worth every penny.

I just lack sufficient sense of humor to have enjoyed this. I tried duct taping a chihuahua to my forehead, in hopes it would project my having more sense of humor. It failed, and chihuahuas also do not have a sense of humor. At any rate, I have a D-18 I bought in 1971, and a 00-18 bought around the same time. Marvelous instruments, and, with age, they smell so nice inside the soundhole. ARF!

Honestly, my reason is that I already owned a Martin D-18 in the 1970's. I didn't like it and so I sold it. Decades later I decided I would never buy another Martin. Since realized it is just dreads that I disdain. So I have an Martin OM and a Martin 000 12-fret now and really do like them quite a lot.

In the past I went through four dreadnoughts, including a Gibson, that soured me on the type. But I sat down at the local shop and played a D-18 and a Collings D-1 (pretty much the same guitar, but nearly twice the cost). The D-18 sustained longer and had less of that dreadnought muddle in the overtones. Now there is a new D-18 on the rack next to the OM and OO Martins I liked from the start. I just hope I live long enough and retain my hearing long enough to "play in" the D-18.
