Sometimes it can be kind of nice to see how something falls into it's place. That statement is especially true when you've seen how other things rely upon it. That's how I felt when I recorded this one.
Split between a few different areas of Rotherham which you wouldn't think belonged together if you just looked on the map without any parish boundaries being shown, the filming involved here was quite a complex conundrum to work out. Where would I start? Where would I finish? How would I make sure everything fell into place properly in the video afterwards? Would I miss anything?
Regarding that last question, hopefully I haven't missed anything majorly important, but I am realist, and knowing how difficult this one was to plan and carry out, I know some things won't be in the video. However, I do think the main parts of this parish have been covered. The main part is of course, Silverwood Colliery, which I have focused on heavily here, and then everything else has just slotted in around it - literally. This parish contains two hamlets that give it it's name, but then at least four other areas that are separated from each other by virtue of the fact that Silverwood's vast expanse of woodland and nature reserve is right in the middle.
These areas have changed considerably over the course of the last 50 years, one considerably more than the others, as it's old terraces have been torn down, replaced with new developments, including both business and residential redevelopment. As a claim to fame, this place played host to Hollywood in 1991, and if you watch the film that was made here, it would be barely recognisable from what you'll see in this video.
By far the hardest parish in Rotherham to film, edit and put together, I hope you all enjoy my attempt at bringing you DALTON.

The story behind that solo terraced house was they tried to force the man out in the late 90's when they were knocking the brook down and offered him a fraction of what the house was worth. My grand parents were talking about it at the time. He told them where to stick it and they fought him for months, in the end costing the company more money then giving him his full asking price just to have workers sat idle for so long. So they lost and he got to keep his house, a house he wants to sell now. Strangely enough my grandparents lived further back past the Green's chippy and my great grand parents lived on the brook all their lives. My grand father and great grand father worked at that pit, later my grand father worked at the steal works. It used to be nice before all the "certain" people moved in, not an area you would want to live in now and worse since the flood of "new" people. Still happy memories from when I was a child.

I worked and lived in Thryberh and Sunnyside. It was known as Thrybergh Silverwood Colliery.

Many of the residents of Dalton were fathered by a past Vicar who took the notion of Pastoral care over literally. Rumour says that his sons were just the same and carried on the Fathers good work.

As a child we lived at the top of whinny hill on cross street before they knocked that down , the toilets were outside, we used to play in the old derelict houses in Dalton, certainly takes me back.

Excellent, glad I brought back some memories! They're the same houses that have been demolished now for those new ones they're building I take it? Why were they taken down? I tried to find out online but all I found was what's going on there now, nothing to tell me why the old ones have gone

There was pit ponds at the bottom of Pit Tip in Dingle Del. Full of frogs stickle backs. We used to build tree dens and camp out over night in the school holidays. Was great. Tip leveled out and swallowed the ponds and the woods. Wouldn't have happened today. Coal Board want suing.
