Remote ID. Do I Give A Rats Behind?

I don't do a lot talking head videos but I feel this one is long overdue. Remote ID is coming whether it's in a week or so or it gets postponed until spring. Should we be worried, concerned or downright scared. Is the hobby in trouble. I'll give you my thoughts and the way I'm going to approach Remote ID. #remoteid

Update: A few days before Remote ID was to take effect, the FAA announced it was delaying enforcement of Remote ID until March 16th 2024. What does this mean? It means if you have a noncompliant drone, you can continue flying it without repercussion. If you already have a module associated with a drone you must use it. All DJI drones from the Air 2s and newer are Remote ID compliant. The idea is that the Phantom 4 Pro V. 2.0, the FPV drone, Mavic 2 Pro & Zoom and the Air 2 will get updated well before the March 16 date. The original Mavic Pro and the Mini 2. No word on those drones as of yet. Will modules be readily available by then at a reasonable price? One can only hope.

Ordered a complete RID module (antenna, battery, et. al.) for $149 shipped (although back ordered for two weeks) three days ago. Yes, there's a supply chain problem, but the are out there for much less than $200.

I can detect my Mavic 3 Pro remoteID a kilometer away using an Android phone and drone scanner App. That’s what bothers me the most… if it was really only short range I guess I could live with it… Here in Europe we have a LOT of drone haters and privacy maniacs who think drone are just spy machines

I have been curious about the operational range of these things. Do you notice the range being limited by line of sight? If your drone is at a lower altitude, behind a building, hill, or trees for example, do you see a reduction in the range your phone can detect your drone.

​@rcaviator4310 For me with my M3P, I find that a small bit of foliage like trees generally pose little issue, but the second any buildings get in-between (Wifi interference) the connection drops very fast if you arent flying much higher up.

Even part 107 pilots can fly an unregistered Mini 2 as long as the use falls under the recreational exemption. You can fly it strictly for fun.

Correct, but if it’s registered under part 107 use like mine, you’ll eventually need the module. Hopefully DJI will update it to be remote ID compliant.

There are RC Clubs that are Drone friendly. The issue at Valley Forge is the requirement by the Park that cameras on aircraft (airplanes, drones, helicopters) are NOT permitted. Even if the camera is turned off, you cannot fly. There are RC Clubs in Chester County, PA that are drone friendly.

I hear you. I was over there a couple of years ago and a young man was flying his drone. I think he was the son of one of the members. That’s when I inquired and was told no.

Mine is compliant and I'm ok with it - maybe it will encourage 2A "patriots" to think twice about threatening to "shoot it down". Getting a carry permit is such a pain in the neck.

We need more public education on the matter. Like it's illegal to interfere with a pilot, while they are flying. This from: Casetext website. "Under federal law, willfully shooting down an aircraft (including drones) is a felony that may lead to imprisonment (18 U.S.C."

No remote ID, I don't think i need Remote ID, i don't even think it would work where i live, the nearest big airport is 64 miles away, the nearest big city is 45 miles away, and i don't think Remote ID will work very well here, 9/7/2023 just having some fun flying at sundown. If you have Remote ID on your drone, it works. But in remote areas, there is nobody to receive the signal. On older android phones the range is about 100-150 yards line of sight. Newer Android phones supposedly can be "seen" by the Karen apps much further.
