Welcome to our channel! We’re excited to get into this with you guys and share some of our journey and knowledge of custom van conversions & Offgrid Power.
We often get asked about the accuracy of the SOC indicator on the Daly BMS, so we thought we'd put together this video to talk through our thoughts on the Daly BMS State Of Charge indicator. Daly BMS are generally pretty good and reliable. We're covering our thoughts on whether it's essential to have a Victron Smart Shunt or not or whether you can get away with the SOC indicator on the Daly BMS.

I have all three devices for measuring SoC that you have tested, and my experiences agree completely with your closing comments. I have bought 4 of these BMS and 1 has definitely failed during warranty for no apparent reason (No replacement from Daly). Another one is behaving erratically. I am considering dispensing with Daly BMS and replacing them with three devices: 1- A 200A resettable 'fuse/breaker' 2- A Victron Smart Shunt 3- A 16S active balancer (Active Equalizer Balancer 16S Lifepo4/Lipo/LTO Battery Energy Capacitor) I know this may be frowned upon by experts but my reasoning is as follows. 1- The breaker is better than FETs as a disconnection device when there is trouble. 2- The Victron Smart Shunt is more stable and produces graphs useful diagnostics like V, A, Watts, and SoC. 3- The Active Balancers are autonomous and just get on with the job quickly. A diagnostic check of each cell every month or 2 (or 6?) can be done with a voltmeter. (BTW have you seen Pokit meters & dataloggers) shop.pokitmeter.com/ From my perspective, replacing the erratic Daly BMS will reduce the chance of having 'issues'. What do you think?

Thank you for this video. I've been having concerns with 2 Daly BMS's giving accurate state of charge. I was thinking maybe there maybe issues with the real time clocks? Instantaneous voltage and current feedback appear to be the same as my shunt whenever I check

yeah their coulomb counter is a bit weird. My LiFePO4 pack is used as a buffer battery with a CC/CV charger and an DC/AC inverter, essentially like an online (double conversion) UPS. The CV voltage is set to 13.6 V, or 3.40 V per cell. Even though the Daly app allows to set current SoC in the parameters, still, when I set it to 100% when the cells are floating at 3.40 V and no current is flowing into the battery anymore, and then discharge it to say 75% and then recharge back to 3.40 V per cell, the SoC indicator doesn't go up to full 100%, but rather stays at something about 94% and drops further with each subsequent recharge. I however have an active balancer additionally connected, so that may play a role, but I don't think it should be significant, provided that the battery capacity is 600 Ah, or ~7.6 kWh, so whatever's consumed by the balancer during the discharge/charge cycle should be negligible. I may try using a separate shunt based counter to compare the results with what the BMS is showing.

On your first two gripes about high/low voltage protection defaults... I think you've forgotten general point of any BMS, it is only for emergency protection of the cells - the last line of defense if you will. Therefore the default high volt protect & low volt protect should not be adjusted. The charger should always be the device shutting down at the desired voltage, if it doesnt and continues to charge then (and only then) should the BMS shut it down. This case on a properly designed system should be extremely rare - only when the charger malfunctions and continues charging. If the charger being used is charging higher than your desired voltage then you need a new charger, a BMS should not be used to regulate this - it was not designed to do so. On low voltage if you are regularly relying on the BMS to shut down at the low voltage protect then and its a poorly designed system. Either not large enough battery system capacity or you do not have any other safety measures in place. Again, BMS should only step in if other systems fail, therefore voltages should be set to higher and lower than these systems. Your third gripe; the low temp charging cutoff, I completely agree with you that it is far too low and will cause damage to cells if charging is continued at this low of a temperature.

I really like this and agree with you. I have an issue with one of my two Daly BMS. It losses SOC even though the battery does not. The two battery banks are always at the same charge level but one BMS show a dropping SOC. I can't reinstall the firmware or software can I? I reset SOC on the same battery bank. Also I am using the parallel modules. BTW no answer from Daly.

Generally speaking some (or many) systems are designed that BMS is the last line of defense for errors and charger is what determines high voltage cutoff and inverter handles low voltage cut off. Im sure that is why daly have such high high-voltage cut off and low low-voltage cut off. But that ofc totally go against dalys way of resetting its columb counting My system do not like it when the bms cuts off power, it is a bit random what can happen but sometime my solar charge controller and/or inverter may need a manual reset.

I think I can see a rationale why 'cell volt high protect' should be slightly greater than the charging voltage ÷ 4. If they were the same, wouldn't charging stop as soon as the constant voltage phase of charging begins, and so the cells would never be fully-charged to the desired 100% charge voltage?

Hello, that was interesting. I use a balance100 bms. A new brand from Daly. They are using 2.85v as litmit of tension by li Ion cells. There i a regulation/ computation of the Soc wich is ; you enter 100% soc when your battery id full, the first time you use the bms. It is then calculated af 13:32 ter a full cycle charge decharge. I use a Atorch dl24 (4 fans, 600W) to get up to 13A from the 13s6p battery and it cut at 39V or 2.85 on the dl24. On the parameters page there are 4 parameters one I do not get what it does it is : Zeroing the current drift. I think it is may be a way tosubstract the current drift due to impedence of wiring, cintact points, etc. Is it the case ? Best regards

If we charge the battery With a 60 watt 12 volt solar panel directly through the Smart BMS without having to have a charging controller, is it possible? Normally, how many volts can the Dali Smart BMS withstand?

I can see the following playing out: cells are not in exact equal balance, using the higher high-voltage cut off, will allow better balancing to take place, where-as setting this value too low, the BMS will cut off charging too soon for the BMS to work on balancing cells. As you noted with low voltage, even at high voltage, cutting off the charging current will quickly result in the cell voltage dropping to a lower value. This is especially true under load. On the low voltage cut off, as you pointed out, under load the cell voltages sag, but once discharge is cut-off, these cells bounce back to higher voltage very quickly - within seconds. The "neg 40C" low temperature charging makes no sense at all with Lithium Iron Phosphate - but dues make sense with lead-acid. I feel your comment about battery capacity setting "Daly has no idea what cells you are using" applies here as well. Daly have no idea what capacity or chemistry cells you are using: so user needs to set parameters for low, and high temperature cut-offs and the cell capacity.

My main issue is that my Daly BMS doesn't provide accurate SOC because it doesn't register current draws below 2A. In my van I have a lot of low loads that draw below this so inevitably it will begin to lose accuracy. I've heard there is a way to change this but not via the app.

@cyberfuker85 2A. The setting can be adjusted apparently but it requires a PC and moving past the UI in the app. I've seen other comments saying it isn't very accurate, probably the reason why it is set so high. I've pretty much given up on it for anything than cell monitoring, current limiter and low temperature limiter. It!s balance and SOC functions are pretty useless.

I think they have a higher high voltage cut off is because they want more balance time. Its the only reason i can think of

BTW , I supposed I can stop an electrical vehicule from a distance by switching to "off" thev disch. MosFet with within the wifi app. Could help againt robbery .! But it is may be not so strong , wi noticed, if plug the charger, all Mos turn to "on" . On the other hand if I unplug the charger, all mos switches come back to whete I left them . I dont know which is the master when comm is used is it the software ? Is it the bms ? (I asked, was promized an answer monday )... good week end to all PS : an usb 435, Can, or serial cable allow to use the software "pc host" which is mandatory i.e. to have recognized a "key" (simple on off switch.) That pc host app is the most complete app for in deep parameters (and posdibly to upgrade the software) ... regards

I bought a van with 4 batteries and was told the storage was 400ah. I have the same Daly setup as this video and when fully charged the app says remaining capacity is 150ah. In the app settings the rated capacity is 150.0ah. My question is how does the bms workout the actual ah? Can it be changed manually? With it being 150ah does that limit the storage to 150ah? I suppose I am just trying to workout if it is the bms limiting my storage or is my storage really 150ah and not 400ah? Thanks

just some feedback, if you can't talk for more than 10 seconds without catching your breath or having to clear your throat, you should cut the video at the end of each talking point. Some resellers of daly bms use modified firmware. I dont know if it is daly that offers customized firmware when resellers buy in bulk or if it is the resellers who program their own firmware. The default firmware on daly bms is just bad especially how it calculates SOC.
