I just earned my PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology and did cancer research for almost 7 years (just wanted to say that as an informed fan of the podcast). The difficulty in curing cancer is because it’s not just one disease. There’s a cancer for pretty much every organ of the body and even tissue types. And they’re each distinct. In addition, the same kind of cancer can have different subtypes that require different treatments, such as breast cancer. On top of that, two people with the same subtype of cancer can have totally different outcomes when it comes to treatment. And even further, tumors in an individual can be quite from each other. Cancer is a very ‘smart and clever’ disease. It mutates to avoid the immune system and can mutate even more after treatment to render it resistant to further treatment. We’ve been able to track (for the most part) what mutations drive certain types of cancers, but correcting those mutations isn’t so simple (although the use of CRISPR may change that in the future-that’s an ethical can of worms that deserves its own conversation). I’m a big fan of you guys so I respectfully ask for you to please consider doing a little bit of research before giving in to the conspiracy theories about there being a ‘secret cure’. Admittedly the scientific community has a lot of work in improving how to communicate these things to the public, but there are resources out there if you choose to be informed.

I'm a nurse and it annoys me. "Y'all doing X ("X" doesn't even have to be in the same field it can be an article about a rocket) but can't cure cancer." There's a cancer for everything. There's no 1 cure. And if there was a miracle treatment or even a vaccine (like with HPV) these same people would be too suspicious to consider it.

I work in psycho-oncology (cross fields of psychology and oncology) and I did research on female breast cancer and lung and bronchus cancer. People don't really understand that cancer moves QUICK when it comes to changing, growing, and spreading under the right conditions. Chemo is an aggressive treatment bc of this. You really have to consider so many factors in order to "cure" the cancer. And "being cured"/in remission doesn't mean you'll never have it again. Remission doesn't imply it is gone for good, we just can't find anything at that point. It can pop up again at any time and your chances are greater for recurrence. We just hope it doesn't.

I’m a Therapist & many drug addicts especially heroin addicts are actually addicted to the process/motion of preparing to smoke/snort/inject the drug. When becoming clean/sober, many recovering addicts were addicted to the process and this makes it so difficult to quit because it requires changing everything you know (people, places, behaviors).
