It's because Marshall Islands companies such as Pablo Union are pretty much US owned. THAT is why the media doesn't want exposure of the incident and people digging. It's probably a CIA run shell company for making money.

I used to work one of the dark fleet, during COVID19 times, the ships of the company used to load in Iran discharge in UAE, then the oil was shipped to Malaysia and further to China. U. S Navy patrolling the straits of Hormuz had no idea that the ship is actually coming from iran, as the ship used to spoof it's AIS and GPS, papers were made to show it's Iraqi oil. All becomes white as its get to the uae and Malaysia. Conditions on board those ships are unsafe, old broken machineries, incompetent crew, ownership of the ship used to change every 4 months. It was a time bomb. I'm happy I left within 4 months couldn't continue anymore over there, after a year that ship went to scrapyard. The company operated ship as same as mentioned by Sal. Thanks to you for your great research, fewer people went so further to investigate the inner workings of the dark fleet. Greetings. I hope you get the messege before u tube deletes it bcoz it has happened before. I suspect lots of big fishes are involved in this mafia / monkey business. Take care

In a past life I was an instrumentation tech. and one of my jobs was maintaining O2 Analyzers by GE Panametrics. I saw so many units that didn't work correcty, the failure mode was to read near 0. I always pictured an event like this one, honestly I'm suprised it doesn't happen way way more often. 02 Analyzers are expensive, expensive to maintain and often seen as nothing but a pain in the ass. Also they are quite easy to get to read low if you're just tired of dealing with it.

It seems as though the architects might have intended for the deck to blow away first in an explosion in order to save the water-tight integrity of the hull. Don't know if it's true, but the fact that the decking offered the path of least resistance saved the hull sides and bottom from being blown out.

The hull needs to be tough to resist the waves while ensuring the ship remains intact. It also has to take the weight of the cargo. The top of the tanks is not much more than a roof so it doesn't need to be as tough as the hull. That makes it the weakest point no matter what.

About 40 yrs ago, when I was a tug engineer, there was an explosion at Reinauer,s yard on Staten Island NYC. A tug was bringing an empty gasoline barge into the dock, came in too hard, hit another barge and blew up. It rolled the deck up like a sardine can, tank tops and all!

Sal, Years ago ARCO bought the stern of the Chevron Hawaii. The Chevron Hawaii exploded while discharging cargo in Houston at Shell's Deer Park Refinery. The Chevron Hawaii was beleived to have been struck by lightning. ARCO bought the stern and fitted an entire cargo tank area from the pumproom bulkhead to the bow becomingthe ARCO Texas. I did the majority of the plan approval for the new construction. I can remember vividly walking the stern of the ship after it had arrived at Newport News Shipbuilding. It is hard to describe the wreckage. I remember looking at steel hull and deck plating that was torn like a sheet of paper. I stood on the upper deck and watched someone walking across the deck on the other side of the ship. As I watched they disappeared from sight, reappearing as they walked the deck. The deck on the opposite side looked like a bunker on a golf course. In the explosion a section of the deck had been peeled up and folded back on the house. The radio room had been crushed, leaving about 6" in height. I am truly amazaded that the Pablo's hull is in as good condition as it is. I am amazed that the ship is still floating. My guess is now has a floodable length of zero. By the way, there are many reputable operators whose ownership papers are in lawyer's desk drawers. It was not uncommon for major oil companies to order and build tankers. Upon delivery ownership passed to a third party and the ships were bareboat chartered. The oil companies then operated the vessels with their own crews. Large oil companies also self-insured their vessels. If I recall correctly the Hull and Machinery was self-insured, the Protection and Indemnity was through an insurance company owned by the oil company and the oil spill insurance was through oil company cooperatives. That's a massive explosion - I find it hard to believe any of the crew are still alive. I don't understand why it wasn't inerted down - surely that's 101 for tanker crews? Although perhaps I shouldn't be surprised.... The other question is whether it was deliberate. Flag states need to be held accountable if they're basing out of the US then I'd have thought US law could well apply, the US is not exactly known for having a problem with applying laws extraterritorially. Pretty amazing that she hasn't sunk although I suppose a empty tanker has a huge amount of reserve bouyancy. I suspect the ship will be scuttled in deep water, ultimately dragging her into port is going to cost a fortune and as you say nobody is going to want to admit to it being theirs. It's interesting that aviation has managed to appy excellent safety standards worldwide simply by refusing access (ICAO) to airports for aircraft whose safety authorities are not up to the job - perhaps a similar system could be applied to shipping (if there was a will to do it).

There was an assumption with sanctions that withdrawal of the flag and insurance would prevent ships for sailing. We no know that assumption was flawed and trade will continue using un-insured vessels. If this vessel is insured I hope the insurers pay the crew families compensation and reject the rest of the claim since no dark ops/sanction busting is likely to be a clause. Operating outside the rules has to become very costly.

The explosion of TWA 800 on July 17, 1996 prompted new regulations for inerting airliner fuel tanks. After a bunch of thrashing around, they ended up with essentially a medical oxygen concentrator, producing separate outputs of nitrogen for inerting, and oxygen that could be either used in the cabin or vented out. The concentrator runs all the time the engines are running, using bypass air from the engines. Seems like a better plan than filling an inert gas tank before each flight. Given the number of aircraft involved, implementing this in the entire fleet is a long ongoing process.

That wasnt all vapor my friend, black/grey clouds with hydrocarbons = over enrichment combustion, also the compartments are fairly clean so its refined products and ruling out fuel oil #1 and 2 because they need really high temperatures even for spark ignition....so all that soot tells me its a combustion of isooctane aka gasoline, approximate lamda .50 If the oxygen was any higher the cloud would be light grey or opaque....the flame was able to propagate fast enough also points to multiple ignition points likely static discharge.....

As for the list of registration of this "dark fleet" I'm totally amazed at the numbers involved here, also amazing that two of those registrations are in the US just a short distance from each other. Now I apologise in advance for what I am about to say but I wonder if the American authorities actually know their there 🤔🤔. On a more regrettable note I don't hold out much hope for the three missing crew members to even be found, regrettably just simply doing their job, all our thoughts are I'm sure with their families 🙏🙏

Most fuel air explosions are really just a rapid burning of fuel mixed with air. It seems like semantics, but the mixture has to be just right in order for it to truly detonate rather than just burn extremely quickly. The difference is in the shock wave created.

Flags of Convenience is a worldwide problem, and the national shipping industry that started it all was? The United States shipping industry instigated the first widescale reregister of shipping to subvert local safety, labour and tax law/regulation. It is interesting to see that the Marshall Islands and Liberia are such big players in the shadowy world of re-flaging considering their very close political, economic, and historical ties to the United States. Would not be surprising either to see that large Republican donors have close ties to these shipping registers and companies that operate through them.

flags of convenience and hidden registries, black fleets have always been a serious problem in shipping, now it's just easier with internet registries. Liberian registry office in VA isn't nearly so bad as the easy access to registering a ship via internet or probably the ease of buying/ purchasing documentation without actual inspection for seaworthiness. Then the whole problem of crews, maintenance and competent oversight and corporate responsibility.

Why doesn’t the U.S. government seize the registries which are hosting sanctions-busting black fleets, especially the registries located in Virginia and other locations in the U.S.? After seizing the registries, couldn’t the U.S. de-register the black fleets? That and pressure applied to by the U.S. and its allies could force many other registry-hosting countries to de-register black fleets. Wouldn’t that greatly limit the ports where these black ships could dock making sanctions-busting less and less attractive?

It seems to me that those registries based in the US would be violating US sanctions laws when they allow registration of vessels carrying cargos that violate US sanctions. Why is US law enforcement (seemly) ignoring these registries while making a show of going after yachts owned by Russian oligarchs? The shadow fleet tankers allow Russia, Iran, and Venezula to make money selling oil. In contrast, a Russian oligarch paying (non-Russian) yacht crew and buying parts and fuel from non-sanctioned countries, would just be draining money from the Russian economy, and thus making other economic sanctions more effective.

AIS stands for Automatic Identification System. The vessel type/size/weight/length information broadcast is programmed into the AIS module and then transmitted and available for all ships to view along with GPS data, heading, speed over ground, etc.

I find the image of sheared support beams from the deck amazing. Wonder if you could get some more close up pictures or video of this damage? Looks very strange how "cleanly" they are broken off, all in similar places - is there a weld joint there which attaches the deck crossbeams to these "corner" brackets?

To inert the tank would it be possible to vent cooled exhaust into the space? I’ve used dry ice pellets for localized inerting during hot work on fuel systems in trawlers. I’m sure there would be concerns with hot gasses being vented into an atmosphere with high LELs but I can see where it would be relatively cheap to do it this way.

The Pablo was most likely powered by a slow-speed diesel engine. The main engine is generally not used to power the cargo pumps, instead, the cargo pumps are powered by the ship's generator (electric pumps) or by a boiler that provides steam (steam turbine pumps). If diesel generators are used a separate inert gas generator would be used. A boiler could provide enough gas for an inert gas system.

Inertgas is always "washed" with seawater to cool it down and remove soot/sulphur particles (which you do not want in your tanks), then it runs through a drying tower, before being delivered to deck for use. This is both the case if you use Inert gas (produced by burning diesel on an inert gas generator), or if you use exhaust gas from boilers/engines (then called flue-gas). When venting/gasfreeing the tanks, SOP is to use inertgas to remove the hydrocarbons until the hydrocarbon content (HC) is below 2% by volume, before you start introducing fresh air to the tanks. This way you will never have a flammable mix in your cargo tanks. The "flammable" gasses at first are vented out through a mast-riser or through high velocity valves on deck.

Sure looks like the results of a bleve [boiling liquids expanding vapor explosion, for those who do not know what that is]. Looks like the explosion took the path of least resistance to exit the vessel's cargo holds. Now the question [among several] is what was the source of the ignition?

More generically, a fuel-air bomb, with shaped charge characteristics, insofar as the containment vessel was mostly embedded in water.

Sorry but if it was a BLEVE the tanker that took the video would have been destroyed; this is more like a grain silo popping when a dust explosion occurs. Dramatic but no where near as energetic as a BLEVE.

@@dominicestebanrice7460 Actually it only is contained until the first seam/weld gives way. Once that happens the heat, explosive vapors, etc...are vented to the atmosphere, In this case the weak "points" were the deck plating and joining members.

Manslaughter by gross negligence charges incoming for the captain I think. I believe the only way to stop things like this is to amend UNCLOS. Ban turning AIS off except during wartime. If a ship does turn AIS off it can be seized by anyone even in international waters. Ban transfers of cargo outside of territorial waters except for military purposes or rescue purposes. Again render ships that do it liable to seizure by anyone in international waters.
