Hello everyone! My name is Ian Urbina, and I am the director of The Outlaw Ocean Project, which produced this amazing documentary film. I’ll be happy to answer any questions here (with input from the filmmakers Ed Ou, Will Miller, and Michael Hsu). Thanks for watching.

Thanks so much for this 🙏 What was the inspiration for this piece? And what made its production most difficult?

Hi Ian, all the visual material is real correct ? How did you film this ? Hidden cameras, you had the permits.... Extraordinary film by the way, congrats !!
@TheOutlawOceanProject Жыл бұрын
@@garrusv Personally, my goal was to offer a counterbalance to the investigative reporting, which provides a critical assessment of the human-rights and environmental record of this fleet. We sought to offer a more intimate look at the experience of working in such a grueling job. The film also aimed to communicate why someone might choose to take one of these dangerous, often exploitative jobs. Two challenges for the whole team were getting on the vessels themselves and figuring out how to tell the story in a way that didn't jeopardize individual people that we met during the reporting.
@boriss.861 Жыл бұрын
Hi Ian there's the Krill Vacuuming as well in the South Atlantic, there's problems brewing there. Are you going to cover it. There is a problem with factory fishing off the East Africa Coast and the North Atlantic too. Out Of Sight Out Of Mind.

I was born n raised in what was then the country's largest commercial fishing port. SIXTY YEARS AGO, when I was a small child, Russian, Asian, n Scandinavian countries sent huge fishing factory fleets to what was the richest fishing grounds in the world, the Grand Banks, in the North Atlantic. American fleets could not compete against these factory fleets that could do all the processing of their catches at sea. Today the Grand Banks is a barren wasteland n my proud hometown fishing fleet is no longer, throwing generations of fishermen permanently out of work.

Thank you for all the motivation I needed to never order calamari appetizers ever again! It's delicious deep fried but if that's all I have to do to wash my hands clean of all the evil, violence and corruption that has become inherent and all pervasive in the squid fishing industry . . . I will gladly pay that price and make that exchange a 1000 times over. But now you have me scared about looking into the shellfish industry because lobster crab and shrimp are my favorite food . . . That is a much more difficult bargain . . . Also to ANY AND ALL looking into this industry for employment, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do yourself a potentially life-saving favor and triple check the legal writing and specific language used in your contract! If you're illiterate and that means paying someone who can read to do it for you, it's worth it but make sure it's someone you can trust like a family member or someone you've known for most your life that hasn't tried to cheat you.

Squids are the opposite of endangered... their populations are booming because of the warming climate and the absence of natural predators such as Tuna. It is environmentally healthy to fish as much squid as possible. They together with jellyfish are in danger of overwhelming the oceans
@jasalexander-hain2601 Жыл бұрын
silly comment as we have wiped out tuna, shark all predatory fish populations so your answer is wipe out all else, if you did that then it will be sea worms and chips. solution is stop over fishing the predators as they will bring back the balance

Its a reality - China has a super huge fishing fleet and wherever they go they decimate the area - and these Chinese fishing boats are also quasi- military boats and each one can be outfitted with missiles and weapons - so basically its a 1200 ship fleet Chinese military operation and it would take a huge amount of warships to defeat them!
