Mostly antennas, though the new build likely was all communications links and crypto machinery, which is, unlike antennas which are basically steel and aluminium skin, much harder to replace.

Losing the orbital communication assets will occasionally mean a delay in downloading images from their spy satellites. They will simply have to wait until the spy satellite of interest is over one of the remaining functional ground stations. I suspect the important targets were the new construction and radars that were in active use (if any).

Parabolics are directional satelite dishes for sending and or receiving radio transmissions in a specific direciton. (the old sky TV dish is a small one of these). The gimbal of course lets them aim it at the spaceship in question.

The Parabolics on gimbals would be the huge antennas for send and receive to communications to satellite; Intel, electronic and visual as well as steering sats back to proper orbits, which degrade after awhile. Gimbles allow for tilt and rotational fine tuning for best signals. Look at the photo and ask yourself why is there a huge empty field in the center of a crowded facility? These things are huge, search for images of NIP-16.. The Crimean installation signal was touted as being able to send and receive deep space signals up to 300 million kilometers. Need a bit more power than a mobi.

A "radome" is just a plastic shell built to protect an antenna that allows the antenna underneath to operate with minimal interference. So if a couple of those were damaged then likely so were the antenna. "parabolic on a gimbal" is an antenna that can be aimed. Unfortunately, the antenna themselves are not a particularly expensive part of the system, although the system is broken so long as they're broken. If those buildings that were hit included the high-power exciters, then you're really talking some damage, especially if they were on at the time.

@@bobouzala, the amount of power necessary differs depending on a handful of parameters (frequency, dwell time, antenna size, etc.), but this is likely 10s of Megawatts, and it's at the highest point for a given system at the exciter (for reference think of all the power you use in your house over a couple of years but packed into a few millionths of a second). Usually there is some tuned "crystal" creating the main frequency that is divided as necessary and then driven through long, tuned tubes to basically build on itself. This is a critical (read expensive) point because it must be precise for frequency while robust to handle all the system power, and usually has to be liquid cooled. A couple of tungsten balls bouncing around in there probably puts an end to the radar part of the radar (as opposed to the digital processing part). What doesn't become unusably punctured likely gets melted by arcs or other short circuits. It's like why dams make great targets: most of the work is already being done for you.

Cost is one part, the other is how long it takes to remake and replace them, I am carefully optimistic that it is going to take a while. At that size, those do not sound like off the shelf parts.

@@kilianortmann9979 If there were spares for the TWT's and power Klystrons, it is very likely they were stored on site, as it takes a good few hours to change out and align a new tube, so there normally is a standby transmitter there already connected and ready to operate in a few minutes, and then the spare tubes are normally stored there, so that the repair does not need to wait on parts arriving from a central warehouse. If there is a warehouse of spares on site as well, then that would also be targeted, as no spares means no repairs.

@@guywest2181 This approach is not often used on smaller systems. The Ferranti Blue Parrot airborne radar used in the Buccaneer aircraft used a Cassegrain antenna. It was constructed from a fine wire mesh embedded in a fibreglass matrix. It resulted in a very narrow beamwidth for the size of the dish.

I used to install Sat up/downlinks, but with those pics it is really hard to put a finger on it. Lets wait for more photo material. Two guesses though: Taking into consideration Ukraine just targeted a sat ground station in the south of Crimea one possibility is that Ukraine is planning something and they are pre-emptively destroying data/voice sat comms from mainland Russia to Crimea. On the other hand somebody suggested that this station was also used to track missiles, Russias "eye" to the south, and destroying this installation would take yet another card out of Russias deck in their Nuclear threatening poker game they play upon the west. But, without detailed photos its speculation right now...

yes, if they effectively are able to blind russia to a degree, that would hopefully get the russikes to shut up with their nuclear threats, as they would no longer be able to detect launches like before, so it would behoove them to tone it down. lest someone throw a few nukes at them that they would not be prepared for..... imagine if they were blind from some directions now, the US as well as others, could probably get a VERY large strike underway without russia detecting it AT ALL. enough to probably severely limit their ability to launch a counter salvo.

That is one thing we need to keep in mind. The cluster warheads don't create a lot of visible damage to civilian satellites as the impact points are smaller than the resolution. What we see is where fires were set and not put out until later. The fire in the field is likely an area they deemed not important to put out until the fire in the complex was extinguished. Depending on the altitude of release, this whole area might look like swiss cheese. I'm curious to see on the ground photos if they come out.

Yeah, the big black patch in the middle is probably not an ATCAMS strike location, but a grass fire started either by one of the cluster charges, or some other burning debris that fell there. In the higher resolution image it is visible, that the strike location was among the buildings in the upper left part of the picture.

the russians said they were planning on building themselves a new one of these in southern russia around 2012 but then they captured this one when they took Crimea which may have ended the plan but it had a Ukrainian staff of 200+ that kept up the facility didn't let it rot since 1991 and the russians said/lied that most of them agreed to stay on but the new stuff might be new facilities they would need to make a thingee just sitting there from 1991 be useful again but have a dual use space/military.... a lot of stuff has been developed since 1991... like indoor plumbing and such

I read a comment saying that it was privatized for a time before becoming fully militarized in 2022. That's likely how it was funded. Private money + gov't grants. Then, seized at the start of the full-scale invasion. Now, what you described sounds like the russian nuclear arsenal from what I've heard from Ukrainian rumors. Rumor is most of rus nukes were maintained by Ukrainan's under contract and since 2014 they've only lost those personnel. So, there's been a brain drain and loss of human resources in the maintenance and upkeep of the ru arsenal. Those things need monthly upkeep and the russians lost a majority of that starting back in 2014.

"Parabolic" and "Cassegrain" refer to types of high-gain antenna, which would be entirely expected at a facility dedicated to deep-space communications. A "gimbal" is a device for pointing a large antenna in different directions - an extreme example being Jodrel Bank. So most of the marked locations are antennas.

NIP-16 is a deep space tracking station, started in 1959, 5years before Australia/NASA'a very similar Tidbinbilla DSS. I'm at Tidbinbilla a lot & it seems like a dangerous strategy to hit these tracking stations, the 25m dishes can't even cover UA afaik. I think UA were instructed on this target. 💛⚓💙

The USSR built some really large parabolic antenna arrays for their orbital/deep space network at this Yevpatoria area complex. There was one massive unit with 8 large parabolic dish antennae in a 4 x 2 arrangement. The entire unit could rotate 360° and pitch up and down, although I don’t know if the individual dishes were fixed or had some limited range of motion of their own. I also don’t know its specific nomenclature, so I can’t say if that was among the damaged or destroyed facilities.

cassegrain can refer to an optical telescope or a radar antenna. most likely a radar antenna. a gimbal is a mechanical mechanism that aims a satellite dish. a satellite dish/parabolic is a high-gain antenna that magnifies the level of weak satellite signals. while large antennas are not that difficult to replace, russia may lack the ability to manufacture these. perhaps the most important that sensitive electronic amplifiers are generally needed right next to the antenna to magnify weak signals before electronic contaminates them. russia may lack the ability to produce/buy these low-noise high-gain amplifier modules.

The dark areas are mostly vegetation fire burning, I'd say there was at least 3 hits. one to the north west of the central burn were a building seems to be missing, other slightly east of north, third North east over high vegetation.... most of the vegetation burnt of so maybe incendiary so they can hit it later

A 6m Cassegrain would be an optical telescope, a BIG one. A cassegrain telescope uses a parabolic mirror as the main element, in this case one about 20 feet wide. Earth-based telescopes really don't get bigger than that.

Parabolic reflectors are dishes that focus the beam to the same degree in azimuth and elevation. They are often used for satellite communications (SATCOM). The dimensions of the dish are an indication of the wavelength employed. 5m & 6m suggests a relatively low frequency and are most likely used for SATCOM.

well they did just recently damage, or destroyed another early warning over the horizon radar that is part of russias ability to detect ballistic missile launches, and I think this complex is related to that system, or at least part of it. if russia is blind to detecting launches in a certain direction now, it will hopefully get them to shut up with their nuclear threats, as they are now blind in a certain direction. as far as the US/nato goes, oh I am quite positive they are getting target intelligence, probably more than they can use.

A Cassegrains can be telescopes or an antennae. In this case, they were antennae, based on pictures previously viewed. Picture a range of antennae like those in the movie, "Contact". The meter dimension describes their outside diameter. In both cases, the signal or image is projected in reverse to the sensors mounted on a station positioned at the appropriate distance from the convex dish so that all reflections of signal or image focus on the sensor or the final lens of the apparatus. Good that they are gone. Russia held no fair lease for use of this Ukrainian ground.

Apparently this will affect the Russian GPS system which relies on their military satellites, that in turn will affect Russian glide bomb navigational systems. They have 4 of these sites in Russian territory, so in other words they've lost a quarter of their capability.

Not really, the ground stations are there to provide correction, the satellites are mostly autonomous, and the loss of a single ground station is a thing designed around, as they will go down for maintenance on a regular basis. Now if they lose another 2 stations then the whole constellation will be less accurate, as the errors will only be uploaded when the satellite travels over that single ground station every few days. Lose all 4 and the system will slowly drift in position over a few weeks to months, as the station keeping does not get updates on the difference between calculated ephemeris (orbit and the parameters to say where it will be in the next few orbits that are calculated using simpler maths, and do not use the entire solar system model, as that is computationally expensive, read takes a day or so to determine per satellite, while the simpler ones are good for a few days, and can easily be done in near real time) and the true position, used to update those tables.

@@christopherrobinson7541 The GPS system specs are public documents, so pretty much all of them use similar methods, simply because doing it in a similar way makes the design of the receivers cheaper, as you already have a lot of manufacturers doing the expensive to design RF parts, so if you use common frequencies and similar encoding it makes developing cheaper, and you can also get receivers that use all 3 systems together, getting a much better overall accuracy and faster lock in as well, along with also averaging out errors as well.

it hasnt worked yet. since this station was hit, they are still launching precision glide bomb attacks. either they didnt damage the station enough, or they have other ways.

@@xisotopex The satellites will still be updated from other ground stations, and even if they are all off line they will still work, just that slowly the precision will degrade, though things like airspeed and direction will still work for a long time, it is only the datum references, that all use to calculate position, will slowly drift randomly.
