DAMAGED IT!? How Bad is My AMG GT Black Series' Paint After 25,000 Miles

Let's discover if PPF has saved the expensive paint job on my AMG GT Black Series! I resprayed it to my favourite AMG Solarbeam, a notoriously impossible paint colour to match, but have since driven 25,000 miles and therefore we want to restore it back to perfection. It's time to find out...
Paint Protection Film carries a number of benefits; from reducing the damage of stone chips, to keeping the car easier to clean and avoiding swirl marks, to protection even from actual light accident damage. However, after driving 25,000 miles / 40,000km, with countless supercar rallies and convoys, plus heading to all sorts of countries like the UAE, USA and Romania, there are plenty of chips to investigate and ideally restore to former glory.
We get started at The Shmuseum with a visit from Topaz Mobile, who have recently launched with a fleet of state-of-the-art vans equipped with heated, filtered water ready and the latest Topaz Car Care products. This is exactly what I've been waiting for in recent years to maintain the collection going forwards and over the moon that this service has finally arrived.

However, we're then on the road over to @TopazDetailing HQ for a catch up with Nabil after a preparation wash, to inspect the GT Black Series and really look into what it's like. While it's a car to drive and enjoy, it's also great to keep it in perfect shape for the future. Having spent significant money to paint it in my choice of colour, obviously I care about it looking good and after many of the big adventures are complete, it's time to bring it back to full former glory.

Hi Tim, just some friendly feedback as a long time viewer. Your new edit style makes the video seem less organic and personal, and more scripted and manufactured (if that makes sense). I personally much preferred your longer, one-take'esque style as it helps me stay more engaged, and focus on what's being conveyed.

That's very interesting feedback! Our intention is actually totally the opposite; the one-takes were getting far too scripted whereas this is off the cuff just filming something and trying to let it just happen more.

It’s only worth the money if you have a crazy expensive car with a crazy expensive paint job. Repairing the paint chips/ road grime after a few years use will always be much much cheaper than PPF.

Tim I would buy a car from you anytime. The fact that you take so much care with them speaks volumes. Just one question about the PPF. Is it expensive? Look for the work it does I assume it will not be like 10 pounds etc let's be realistic. But a average car is basically what I'm looking at.

PPF is great but you’re not counting that your custom sprayed paint job was undoubtedly much better than even a Merc factory Black series paint job especially with the clear coat. That helps protect the paint underneath the ppf.

I had PPF on one of my cars for 10 years it looked DESTROYED. Pulled the ppf off and looked brand new. PPF really is magic.

Still trying to understand why you don’t use the Exoshield Windcreen protection film? I know I won’t save you from a massive hit, but I would have saved you from a least a couple of windscreen replacements. I have it on my classic Ferrari and it’s not noticeable when driving. A replacement windscreen for this old Ferrari would be massively expensive and probably impossible to find.

Im intending on having 2 of my vauxhall vxrs ppf'd in the future, one is a garage queen to no end only done 100 miles in the last years since i biught it with really low miles and another ive had way longer and abused for 15k miles in about 7 years so once thats fully resprayed back to absolute minter and all its shiny new pieces on ill be having ppf done before it goes anywhere

I had my new car (Genesis Electrified G80) fully covered by PPF (Xpel supergloss self healing) last year prior to delivery. I used Auto-Protek in Minley Hampshire. Whilst not as big as Topaz, they have the advantage of the two guys (Danny and Scott) that set up the business taking direct involvement in the process. As they both have a super critical eye, you can rely on any imperfection to be spotted, unfortunately with Topaz, whilst the boss might be critical does that filter down to the staff who actually do the work! I personally am obsessively fussy, and Auto-Protek more than meet my expectations... For anyone that is looking to achieve as close to perfection as is possible, I would certainly give them a call.

Since I read in the comments that you are testing: not that it devalues your content in ANY way but the intro is(was?) an important part. Now that I think about if, it is quite strange how these otherwise completely insignificant details have an important value.... Interesting test case for how (badly) we humans are evolving? For new viewers, the original intro or none at all makes no difference whatsoever. For us (me) long time viewers, suddenly something ¨feels weird¨ when you don´t see/hear it. Truly interesting (and worrying to be fair).

Like on days when you have thick mist and or a layer of dew/frost on the windscreen, it keeps the moisture locked onto the window(you need speed for it to bead), even if you wipe it off with cloth or wipers it stays.. Just spend the money and buy quality wiper blades..

Im amazed or maybe just suprised that Tim doesn't have a wash bay inside the Shmuseum! The other section, the section on the other side of the wall, would be an excellent place to put the bay. It can be closed off from the rest of the space, kind of like a paint booth. Ideally there would be a large roll up door in the back wall to avoid driving outside during bad weather but that may be too much work considering all the work thats already gone into the Shmuseum

Not strictly true that the paint can't be matched. It's only true when the new painter doesn't have the info on what paint mix was used, how many coats were applied and what gun settings were used so they have to try to match it. But as you had the car painted you could go back to the original painter and assuming they kept records of what went in the paint and how the car was painted they could replicate it. When the car was painted it wouldn't have been all in one take. The jambs and shuts would have been fone first then the car reassembled and the outside painted ( possibly some panels painted off the car at the same time or another session). But it all came out the same color? That's because it was painted with the same mix, same settings and same amount of coats.
