Here's what happens when you try to fix damaged threads with a die instead of a rethreading set.
Oh, ‪@FunkFPV‬ - do your worst :D

Flattening threads with a hammer forces material into the valleys between the threads making the bolt useless, using a dye sure doesn’t fix the peaks, but it fixes the valleys and that’s all that honestly matters

Yup, note the "fixing" in quotes, since it doesn't actually fix...I did a video the other day using a rethreading tool which straightens out the threads rather than cuts. Someone said you can just use a die, which you can, but like you said it cuts the valleys and doesn't fix the peaks.

@@SomeGuysGarage cut/file grooves into a bolt and then use that to straighten the threads

@SomeGuysGarage he's saying you're wrong. Especially for the type of home repair work where the bolt wouldn't just be thrown away. Plus pushing that material back will make it weaker and more prone to fail than just cutting the excess.

Yup - the Lang thread repair it (and similar) is fantastic, and doesn't leave you with WEAK threads (which is why using die is bad)

@@StrongerThanBigfoot A regular tap/die with remove metal, which weakens the holding power of the fastener. A thread repair kit like the Lang/Kastar kit will re-shape the thread to it's original form with little-to-no loss of metal and this little-to-no loss of strength.

My phone has gone from listing to what I’m doing to watching because I literally just got done working on beat threads. Someone grabbed them w vice grips. I used a small triangle file and went slow and eventually taking my time. 3 bmx axles worth 50$ a pop that were giving to me thought to be trash. Iv got lots of practice from destroying threads as a kid tho lol

They do make thread files too FYI check out the Lang rethreader set. Honestly thought straightening threads with a forming die (essentially what a rethreader is) is better though since it doesn't remove material.
