Dame Edna's take on why she has less screen time (because I'm too expensive) was a genius choice by Barry Humphries to show us the ways Edna employed her endless sense of grandeur to hide from reality. The joke also implies that the lead actors have more screen time because they are LESS expensive. A joke cutting both ways with so many layers, also cutting quite deep in a way, is pure comedic brilliance.
