Okay I don't think your band is shit (I lied a little bit). However, there are loads and loads of stuff you guys might do that you could do better. Here are 5 things you could change or improve.
#1 You rehearse once a week
0:49
#2 You think you need a manager
3:24
#3 You release music with no strategy whatsoever
6:02
#4 You're an unsigned band that plays a gig for an hour
9:40
#5 Stop thinking people don't go to live gigs anymore

👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my KZbin channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, KZbin channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

Hi Damien, we just played a gig last weekend and we decided to cut it short to about 25ish minutes. I gotta say, the response was amazing. People were jumping around, headbanging and moshing (we play metal) the whole time. No "down moments" during the whole gig. We left on a high note and I think this made our show have a greater impact on the audience. Cheers and thanks for the advise.

YES!!! Small time bands who try to play 2 hour setlists are shooting themselves in the foot. They exhaust their audiences and piss off their fellow bands and promoters. You aren't Metallica yet and no one wants to watch you play for that long. Half an hour works just fine. Gives people a taste, leaves them wanting more and will help you build a better relationship with promoters and other quality bands in your genre who you can cross promote with.

We couldn’t afford advertising, what we could afford what we called handvertising. We went out every weekend to every show we never said a bad thing about the band on stage we just shook your hand and told you who we were and where we would play next. . When we played we tried to shake every hand in the venue thanking them in person for coming out. Handvertisising

I find that usually this complaint comes from the kind of people that won't compromise. "He's not good enough," or "he plays X kind of music and I have already defined my band's sound before I recruited a single member." Except what you can get and build from that.

There is a way to do it once a week... ...sort of. My band rehearses once a week but we have practice sessions with two or three people 2 to 3 times per week. I practice 3 hours a day, everyday. So actually we are working on our art every day. We can only manage to get together as a full group once a week but we are not sitting idle for the rest of the week.
@NeilBolandGuitaristWriter
@NeilBolandGuitaristWriter 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's it. I think the disclaimer for this should be is what is the rehearsal for? Is it 50/50 working on stuff/songwriting? Is it a single bandleader bringing completely arranged tunes to the band? For one band I'm in, we found we wasted heaps of time at frequent rehearsals because the 'plan' (ie, basic arrangements for tunes) were not hashed out enough by the main writer. Now, if we had time to be there three nights a week to 'collab' the arrangements until they were exciting, it would be great. But that's not the situation we're in, so recently we've taken a different approach (because only a madman does the same thing that doesn't work over and over again, right?). Now, the bandleader records the basic arrangement of the with bass, drums, 'fake' guitar', 'fake' keys, 'fake' horns etc (he's a bassist) and emails them to me and the keyboardist (to be honest, horns parts are kind of already 100% sweet as per the midi estimation; we may cut bits out) and gives us a deadline: "Lads, we're going to get together to see that what you come up with works when we're together at rehearsal on __/July/2019. Put some parts down (we're doing this because we're capitalising on everyone's strengths for creating their own parts) by ___/July so we can finalise these arrangements at rehearsal." Now, this might be dependent on a certain genre or level of musicianship (this is a now 'by correspondence' collab style we're trying for a jazz funk instrumental group), because I know that some bands are more 'organic' in their collective creativity; ie, they'd rather spend hours in a room hashing out ideas until something 'happens' for ideas relating to endings, bridges, dynamic features etc. But with our band, I can tell you it's working a treat, and because we're not being asked on the spot at rehearsal to magically come up with parts, we have a little bit more time at home (like maybe half an hour more instead of ten seconds) to really create something that both adds groove and excitement to the piece and capitilises on each players' strengths for a more 'what a guitar player would do' result. So in the end, each member is probably spending at least 6-9 hours a week on it individually, but the majority of that time spent is done alone and more valuable to them and the collective outcome. And we basically only rehearse when there's new material for a gig. And (again, maybe it's a musicianship thing; we are trained nerds after all) punters at our regular gig seem to enjoy the new stuff as much as they do the old stuff. I agree with a shitload of rehearsal if it's for working on more than just being able to play songs properly and to an exciting level; if there's extra writing to be done, sure, spend all week on it. But if it's to repeatedly go over things and still see no improvement, well, you're doing it wrong!

You want music to be your career? Starting out in any other career requires minimum 40 and at times over 100 hours a week of work. At a real job there is no excuse for any member of the company not showing up at work other than illness or family crisis. There is so much work to be done in a band, not just the rehearsal, the songwriting, demoing and recording, the aesthetic decisions, managerial work, promotional work, and so on, but also the building of a true fraternal feeling between your band mates from where true stage charisma is born, and this only comes from time spent and experiences shared together. You have to go to other people's shows together and be seen out on the scene to get a reputation that will turn into gigs and fans if you can live up to it. Your band will not make it simply because you do not take it as serious as it deserves. Every great band has a story of insane hard work and sacrifice behind them. You guys that think you can patch it all together in your bedroom and then go be Motley Crue out in RL with 6 or less hours a week work, good luck to you and your journey to obscurity. You are starting a small business. Treat it like one or admit your band is just a hobby and you will always suck.

@@flacidhouse350 I disagree entirely, it's very easy to over practise, if you take the enjoyment out of the experience, it will show in your live performance, and I don't care how perfect you can play your songs, if you're not enjoying it, neither will the crowd, playing a good show live is 80% performance, 20% proficiency, a sloppy band that's entertaining to watch has a million times more chance of success than a proficient band that feels like you might as well just listen to the CD.
@flacidhouse350
@flacidhouse350 5 жыл бұрын
@@LukeGibsonSS You losing the enjoyment isn't because you practice too much. "if you're not enjoying it, neither will the crowd" Well that is clearly objectively bullshit. "playing a good show live is 80% performance, 20% proficiency" That is complete bullshit as well. Try selling this bullshit to Dream Theater, King Crimson, or the Beatles.
@LukeGibsonSS
@LukeGibsonSS 5 жыл бұрын
Flacid House Yeah and who's sold more records, Blink 182 or Dream Theatre and King Crimson combined? I couldn't find numbers on a King Crimson's total but if I give them a generous 5 mil, compared to Dream Theatres 12 Million, Blink 182 have sold roughly triple at over 50 million and those guys can barely play a bar in time or sing a verse in tune. And besides both those bands still look like they're enjoying themselves on stage and play to stupidly large crowds. (Trust me when you're playing in front of thousands of people, it's hard not to get excited.) They still have great stage presence and look like they're having a great time, but they are also very good musically, so that really doesn't refute my point at all. I'm talking about bands who are still playing small shows to very few people, given that there are 2 bands with equally good music, but one band everyone stands like a statue, make almost no interaction with the crowd, no one even looks up from their fretboard, playing to an unreceptive crowd of 50 people. I don't care how perfectly you play the track after that show the crowd might be polite and clap, but they're gonna go home and forget about your existence. On the other hand a great performing band can play to the same crowd and blow their fucking minds, you can play wrong chords, you can forget lyrics, you can miss entire parts of songs, yet after that show they want to take photos with you, they want autographs, they want to buy you drinks and get to know you, they'll want mementos, they'll want to be your friend, they want to know when you're playing next, they want to add you on social media, hell some of them will even offer you a bed for the night, and they'll talk about you to everyone, hell I knew one guy ditch his wife on their anniversary to go watch his favourite band in a town a 100 miles away.I've seen it a hundred times, bands playing the same show to the same crowd and the one who performs better, even if they're not as good musically steal the show every time. But seriously The Beatles? They were extremely energetic performers for their time and hardly the pinnacle of proficiency by comparison to the other two you've mentioned. Their record producer Quincy Jones called Paul the worst bass player he'd ever heard and said Ringo couldn't do simple parts of the record and actually got other people in to record it for him. In fact he just called the whole band "The worst musicians in the world" www.vulture.com/2018/02/quincy-jones-in-conversation.html Other bands that were known for being sloppy musicians live: KISS, The Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols, Motley Crue. Metallica, Black Sabbath, White Stripes, Nirvana, Van Halen, Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, Jimi Hendrix (Note some of these are good players, but they often performed while highly intoxicated to the massive detriment of their playing ability) Notice anything? Arguably some of the most iconic bands on the planet and behind some of the most legendary live performances of all time. Of course it is better to have playing proficiency and stage presence together, but hands down if you have to pick one or the other stage presence is going to win at captivating general live audiences every time. I ask you to name me 1 band that puts on a static lifeless show, totally boring to watch but are musically perfect that has reached anywhere near the level of success these bands have.Humans are very visually stimulated creatures if we weren't why bother with music videos? Why don't lyric videos get just as many views as official videos? Why can an interesting music video make a bands career? Here's a poll on stage presence www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=234035 Out of almost 800 people over 80% voted that stage presence was more important than playing ability. Hey Damo! I just saw about 20 of your videos now and felt like I have to honor your work by telling you sth. I had to choose, where to leave the comment and I chose this one because it somehow had the biggest impact on me. I sometimes feel like I'm in a session with a psychologist, first partly neglecting, while internally feeling caught over and over again. Now I somehow accept you as a remote teacher. Whenever I question the sense of pushing forward, feeling not accurate supported by my mates, I just look for the proper "Keyes" and have you tell me that whatever went wrong - it's my own responsibility. Sounds weird but it helps carrying on. Thank you so much for for your clear words - *applause*

Great video with so many good points. I will say I disagree with you a bit on the struggle with getting people out to gigs. There are so many factors that contribute to this, that it probably deserves it's own video. For example: places where a band's main demographic is facing economic crisis are hard to sell out; some cities and towns are a bit "culturally dead," as in, they have very little to offer the creative community and/or have little to no support for said community (perhaps even performance space is hard to come by); bands may be more popular in cities/towns/countries that they can not yet afford to travel to, so playing locally, regionally, and nationally are the only options, and though they can build a steady fanbase over time, getting the people through the door initially can be a challenge; if you're booked on a Tuesday or Wednesday as opposed to a Friday or Saturday night, getting the same numbers seems almost impossible; etc. Not to mention, that I have played shows with/attended shows for some stellar bands who had tiny crowds as well as shows with shit bands who have had huge crowds. What's with that? I do not bring these things up as excuses or just to play Devil's advocate either; I genuinely feel like this is a topic that can be discussed much more in depth. (And this is coming from someone who usually doesn't have trouble getting people out to gigs, has played multiple sold out shows, and has even had decent attendance at first time gigs in new cities. I still see and feel the struggle, and any discussion/tips on this issue would be amazing for me, and for others. I can always get better at all this! In fact, I need to! Time to break the cycle of semi-success and burst into super success!!! haha) Thanks for all you do, Damo, and keep rockin' on! Peace and Love to you.

There's also the issue of noise. I was in a garage rock band, we rehearsed once a week and we did ok. But we got constant noise complaints from neighbours even though our band room was sound proofed to buggery. Based on my experiences, I would add to your list reasons : 6) If you're going to do drugs or drink, save it for after rehearsal, not during or before. This had a lot to do with my band not being as good as we could have been. 7) you need a good rhythm section. You can have amazing vocals, incredible guitar or keyboard playing but if your rhythm section is crap, it will drag everything else to that level. In my band, between myself and the bass player we could hold our own musically but we had a drummer who had no interest in being anything more than mediocre and our sound suffered as a result. 8) Be entertaining to watch. It's unlikely that any one is going to care too much about your original songs even if you think they're great but if you have an engaging stage presence then you can probably play three chords for five minutes and get away with it.

Maaaan! I have around 20minutes of material to play and I wouldn't put on a show because my mind was set to that stupid 1 hour show rule. F that! I'm gonna destroy the stage in 20minutes! Thanks, Damian!

Never pass up a gig. Play out as much as possible. You may have a few shitty gigs here and there but at a minimum you'll get experience and have the memories of succeding/failing together as a band.

Hey Damian, Love every the 20 minute set idea. maybe we're in different markets but other than punk/metal at 8 bands a night type show do you find a club that will let you only play a 20 minute set? asking for a rock band...

This is so true! The biggest problem is that musicians think that music and business are two disjointed things but they couldn't be farther from the true! Writing music and recording is about 10% of the game, the other 90% is making people listening to it and creating a buzz around the brand!

It’s great to see such a crazy contrast between bands in the US and the Bands in the UK. If a band would tell a venue that they are only play 25 to 40 minutes they would never play a gig again. For the local bands here, the minimum is 3 hours. And they will typically make $450.00 to $1200.00. The average being $650.00. Thanks for the perspective.

Deal! I have just been on your channel it's great, loving the content. I think the next step is how much more you can churn out. If you can put out a video a week you will start to get some real traction over the next few weeks and months especially if you learn a bit about the metatags and headings :)

Once a week? I've been in bands that are luckily to do one a month lmao. But in all seriousness I think it depends on the musicians. I've played with solid but fairly average musicians and even after a long time playing together songs can still feel sloppy at times. Then I've played with musicians that can improvise in generes they've never even played together before and sound like a well oiled machine even if they haven't seen a rehearsal room in months. If the band only practises their instrument/the material in the rehearsal room it's going to be a struggle. If the band practice the instruments daily, and learn the material inside out before going into the rehearsal room, they can often nail a track perfectly the very first time they play it together. Ironically the one that practises the least is the one that makes the most money lol.

I mean to be fair, I believe Radiohead only met once a week. On a friday, in fact ;P i do get what you mean though, generally, and it's definitely good to work by that. I just think it's important to say with things like this that it's still POSSIBLE if you can only rehearse once a week. Just like the whole Glenn Fricker thing; it IS possible to make a good record out of electric drums. Would acoustic be better? yeah but sometimes you gotta make do with what you got :) edit: love your other points though, i should mention that!

This video is for young players who live in a van trying to be a star. I’ve passed that threshold.lots of good advice Here. I have a few of my own. starting out do as many gigs as you can! trial by fire. 2 come to rehearsal prepared. Don’t start learning songs while everyone has to wait for you in the age of smart phones exchange song ideas include Key BPM in the style of even a shity phone recording. learn them at home then your precious time together is better used and more picking less clicking . I think of EPs as merch pay for gas van repairs expenditures. on the manager thing grow a pair. You can do it. 20% of what ?

1. Rehearsing once a week... You’ll never leave the basement. Kurt Cobain had a strict minimum number of hours of group practice which he enumerated to a drummer they sacked in a letter. He chided him for his lack of commitment. 2. There’s a group of teen age girls who are self managing and making headway: The Warning. Very professional for 3 kids who haven’t passed 20 yet. 3. I see a lot of people not releasing to KZbin where people can hear it. People have to hear it first. If I buy hard copies it’s classic stuff that’s established. 4. I agree with the shorter set for start ups. Beatles on Ed Sullivan... Short but earth changing set. U2 Amnesty International 1986 Meadowlands... Short set but very important in their career. The Beatles could have done Ed Sullivan for free and made out like bandits... They could have paid to play and it would have been worth it. 5.

What to do if you either can’t find people with the competence or style that you’re looking for, so you’re ending up rehearsing 1 HOUR a week... most weeks, that is. I live in a small town with about 25 000 people were most are into either pop or gangster rap or are like 40 plus, so finding people to play with is really hard

Hey great Vid. Point 1: totally agree. Point 2: totally disagree. Point 3: On point! Strategizing is a must and that takes experience. Point 4: Well put. I can't tell you how many times I've left a show midway out of boredom...which is most of the time. Point 5: Yes! Regarding point 2: I'm from California and my father was a manager as well as I've worked in the industry for over 30 years. I realize things have changed... The focus should be "point 1" and find a manager, who loves what you do and, that wants to "partner" with your group. The manager should be able to take care of all of the other points. The issue is that the quality of management has decreased exponentially, while the power of S.M. / streaming has been thrust into the hands of artists. Artists have always had to play two roles and rarely has this ever resulted in success.
