Vertical video is used online pretty commonly now on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, so I thought it would be interesting to examine how Damien Chazelle (The Director of La La Land and Whiplash), composed shots in the vertical aspect ratio for his new short film for Apple.

*Movie Settings that Vertical Video Would Be Great For:* Space movie. There's no real up or down so you could orient things however you want. Scuba diving movie. Giraffe movie. I think a whole movie could get tiring if filmed 100% vertically. However, I think a movie could have scenes that are shot vertically when it's better suited than horizontal shots. As an example for the bowling movie, you could have an exposure scene where you have a piece of it being multiple vertical shots, each following a bowling ball on their way to the pins, hitting them at different times, and then cutting to horizontal pan shot to show the bowling joint environment. Or, in the same movie, you could also have a dramatic scene where a player throws the ball, and then you have a horizontal shot from inside the pins area (behind the pins even), where the walls are blocking most of the shot, and you end up with a vertical frame, and you can see the bowling ball getting bigger and bigger as it gets closer to the pins until it hits them in the climax of the shot.

I think it was a really well executed gimmick for the medium. Luckily, we can turn our phones sideways with fairly high levels of ease to enjoy the more practical widescreen format. I think it’s fun as a novelty and Chazelle makes it look great for 9min, but anything longer would be overkill.

This was, by far, the best use of vertical framing I've ever seen. It made me intrigued by the format for the first time. I think there is plenty more that can be explored and this is the ultimate proof-point that uses of vertical up until now haven't met their full potential. Also, as a DP, for web-based commercial content I am often asked to frame for both vertical and horizontal at the same time, which is truly an exercise in futility.

Seeing that filmmakers like Sean Baker, Steven Soderberg, and Damien Chazelle are innovating art using the Iphone over original concepts goes to show how the medium of the film camera has evolved since the inception of cinema. Also, regarding vertical formats, that segment of the western which is very reminiscent of John Ford's The Searchers is indicative of his passion for cinema. Also, I agree that they were limits to the craft. I mean not to be disingenuous to the craft taken place, I felt certain shots weren't as convincing as you described. It either didn't feel in place with the vertical shots or was not in place as a tableau shot. That being the black and white Buster Keaton segment as an example. But other than that, it's still a good short nonetheless.

This is why I kind of roll my eyes at Tarantino and Nolan being so goddamn precious about film. It’s a tool just like the IPhone. It’s all in how you use it. While I do think we should keep film around to give filmmakers the option to use it if they think it’s the best for the story that they’re telling, but to prance around like it’s superior in any way is sort of ridiculous.

It’s interesting for experimental short films like this but I don’t think it’ll ever catch on for long form storytelling due to the way the naked eye mimics horizontal video instead of vertical. So I’m not entirely convinced it can ever be “cinema”.

I pretty much agree. Another reason I think it won't succeed as cinema is one I mention in the video. Compositions of faces don't work very well- and that's an integral part of cinema.

My logic was always, movies are horizontal because human sight is very horizontal. Our eyes are placed next to eachother. I think that's why vertical comes off pretty weird. To me close ups on faces in verticle are weird... Not sure if just because they did them bad (cutting off the sides of the eyes) or what, but like it just looked bad. Horizontal works better. Close up of an eye? Fits in a horizontal frame. Close up of both eyes? Even better. Close up of the mouth? Fits perfect. Nose is the only thing that works better in vertical and while the nose CAN be expressive, is generally the last thing we look at for emotion. Not to mention we usually use the dead space to the sides in close ups on faces to establish the scenes geography. (and verticle close up frames, as shown in this clip, would look worse trying to show direction.) But maybe I'm just too used to horizontal film making.

Thanks for this great analysis on what works and what is more awkward vertically. Overall, I think its a thrilling vertical short that actually made me feel empathy for the protagonist, while paying homage to some all time great films. Keeping in mind the project is pretty much a "superbowl" commercial for iPhone, it succeeds tremendously in that regard. Also, the action genre seems well suited to it as well, given that you're on-the-go with your phone in your hand. I think the verticality will always be a self-referential, meta element in any vertical fictional project. It's basically the same as looking through a keyhole. It will always feel like you're getting a sliver of the full picture, or a fraction of the full view limited by your access point. The slew of recent protest videos create that same tension of feeling like you're not getting the full picture and yet still seeing a high ratio of unnecessary negative space. The only different being factual documenting by citizen journalists does make you forget the vertical frame once you are absorbed by the gripping elements being captured live and I believe feel the visceral threat of the situation given your immediacy to the event. Still, I don't think this could ever sustain a 90 minute project. And will only ever be suited to short form content.

Vertical Cinema will never work because our eyes are not vertical, they're horizontal. We perceive more left to right, and less for up and down. Apple has been pushing the iPhone cinema thing for years now and it hasn't became a thing for a reason. Because their camera looks like shit. Vertical filming only works in terms of social media, because our hands prefer holding shit that's vertical over horizontal even tho our eyes don't. But cinema doesn't work on a phone because that shit's too damn small, and we want to become immersed. And the best way to become immersed is to make things big and wide. As well, a lot of the vertical frames that DO work very well, still succeed just as much in widescreen. Like the opening shot of the Dark Ruin. The left and right is already black, so boom you're already done. You can make every vertical frame in this short that works, work just as well in widescreen. We've already seen cinema like this, like the John Ford example. Vertical cinema is a useless brand push by Apple.

I watched the film on my monitor (16:9) and still really liked it. The cowboy shoot-out scene was stellar, the composition throughout the scene was refreshing. It's a shame there's no middle-ground in framing every shot to its best when telling a story.

I've made 2 westerny shorts and I loved how the vertical set up looked... Almost natural, but I had some issues. It makes some of the inevitable close ups just.. Weird.. It also eliminates the shot I love in a duel the super wide shot of them just standing across from eachother waiting to see who will do the first move. It doesn't have the same impact as their eagle eye view of it. Not to mention it would increase your budget, what with the secruting a camera so far above the talent to catch them standing far away from eachother. A drone could be done on a smaller budget, but then you'd need to have already had a drone or rent one. Which on a small budget might not make sense. I sort of want to shoot a vertical western... Now who wants to fund it!? Because I sure don't have a the money!

Yeah it works pretty well for this scene but you'd also loose the "wide open vistas" aspect that's great in so many Westerns. Also composing with a character on a horse would be awkward.

I think the problem with the closeups is that in conventional formats we still see some of the surroundings and establish a relationship between the actor's face and the background. He could have used medium closeups since vertical video is good for head/shoulder framing, so based on the intensity of the context I think what he was trying to do is create the vertical video version of an extreme closeup. But then we lose the main point of an extreme closeup which is emphasizing a particular feature (e.g. eyes), so it becomes just this awkward frame of the actor's entire face and nothing else, like the worst of both worlds. I don't want to come off as a Luddite but I gotta say I'm not thrilled about the widespread of vertical video. Chazelle did an extraordinary job for a one-off those gimmicks are not a sustainable solution for most filmmaking - not only will horizontal video always feel more natural because of the way our eyes are set in our face, but also in the vast majority of situations we don't have a lot going on in the ground and in the sky.

As a matter of curiosity, I'm interested in seeing how one would ideally include such vertical shots into a more conventionally filmed production; would it simply be a switch from wide-frame to vertical filming to accentuate particular shots? Or is there something more I'm missing? (I'm by no means an expert on film, please keep in mind)

I don't think you would mix the two (unless you're using a 'found footage' insert within a regular film). I think the primary use case for this would be a movie or piece of content made specifically to be viewed vertically on a smartphone.

I definitely think we'll see more of it pop up as a fad, I personally doubt it will catch on as a primary form of media. Even though our phones are vertical, they can also be horizontal and every other screen in our lives is horizontal, so if you want to make content that fits the majority of screens horizontal makes the most sense. That said I'm all for people seeing if the format holds any real potential otherwise.

I actually hadn't heard of this video. But I've been trying to unpack how i could shoot short films vertically. It lends itself to to art films, with more abstract camera angles. Filling the frame becomes challenging otherwise. You really need verticallity. Which is not as easy to pull off. Also, wider angles than you usually would is also a big benefit. Backing up, and focusing on minimal frames with good use of negative space is your friend

I’ve seen elements of vertical framing used in existing films before. There’s an interesting moment in _Bullet Train_ where Tangerine steps out of the train into what is essentially a vertical composition, allowing his entire body to fill the length of the screen, then as he steps away from the train door and continues along the platform the camera rotates into a standard horizontal format to lead into the rest of the scene which is shot pretty traditionally after that. It’s a clever way to get both a full body shot of him stepping out, whilst still keeping relatively close up and not losing too much detail. It’s also a great way to make a mundane action feel a lot more badass as he strides out to meet the Yakuza. I think it's an interesting idea, even if motivated primarily by commercial interests, and it was pulled off relatively well considering the limitations but the use of vertical was probably to its detriment more than benefit as a whole. Due to the skill and experience behind the director, DP and presumably the rest of the crew it looks good but I think it also represents a limit on the capabilities of this format.

Thomas Flight I actually found it a more composed an aesthetically pleasant image for what the intention was - live picture in picture commentary/reaction. It was particularly fitting considering the content that was being reacted too was vertical and didn’t require more space on screen. It even made for an additional “unique aspect ratio” to have in a video discussing aspect ratios.

I'm not really advocating for it as a standard, definitely not for use on normal horizontal screens. But _a lot_ of people watch stuff on their phones, and it's definitely interesting to explore this format's potential for that viewing medium. We shouldn't assume what we've always done is the best way to do things! That said I doubt this is actually going to become a viable format since most people will want their content to fit horizontal and vertical screens.

Thomas Flight it strikes me as interesting that the format is traditionally one of convenience. People shoot video from their phones vertically because it’s convenient - you can capture a moment better when you don’t have to shift your hold on the phone, and it’s easier to interact with the software with one hand. But filmmaking is the antithesis of convenient! It’s hundreds of people spending weeks and months and years making hours of content. It seems almost silly to try and impose a limitation on yourself that you’ve already overcome by virtue of the filmmaking process. So is the thinking that people will want to consume content on their phone vertically? Is that actually a thing? Of course the amount of video viewed on a phone is astronomical and rising, but... vertically? Anecdotally, I’ve never seen anybody actively watch a video vertically.

I suppose its a good economic opportunity for those that would make feature vertical production. Agree with you that the first close up didn't work, but I didn't mind the second full face close up (of the villain). Vertical video may be something very different for everyone, as we are used to our own specific social media preferences. Someone who watches a lot of tik tok videos wouldn't mind most of the framing in this, but those of us who watch most KZbin videos can get some time to get used to, or even have to make some compromises to enjoy the format.

Interestingly I think TikTok's true "aspect ratio" is actually closer to 1:1. You definitely fill the entire space, but because there's so much text on the screen at the top and bottom, composing with "dead space" on the top and the bottom is actually preferred.

This is well done, yes, but it just seems weird that this technical limitation has not been overcome. For a short time, post-film camera, pre-phone camera, there were lots of creatives using pocket digitals to make full 16:9 projects. It feels like giving up and attempting to make a limitation into a feature.

Eh not the biggest fan of this. There were good shots in this short. I also agree on the close ups and prior to the Indiana Jones part of the short the vertical shots failed. Though for films and anything for television I do not seeing being used too much. Most movies that play with aspect ratio use it for story purposes. Like the clausterphobic scene, those type of scenes will work but as a whole feauture i highly doubt it will work because the scenes could look great in both styles would be more suited for the widelook.

First of all, film dudes don't understand vertical format... leave that to photographers. Second, no photographer would use format 16:9 or even narrower, except in rare situation. Meaning medium fits the goal. Even in portrait photography photographers rather see more square format so narrow format. I think mobile users got pretty good idea about how to use vertical format... with emphasis on the space as fix point or as the opposite, flatten it. So, film crew need to learn how to get out of their frames and search for inspiration elsewhere, not only in film industry.

I think it just doesn't work. Most, if not all, of the shots would look better horizontally and the best shots are the ones with a horizontal frame within the frame, when you aren't really supposed to pay attention to the greater part of the composition.

That vertical seems too vertical! Narrower than 16:9 even if I'm not mistaken.

I believe it's 18:9 (the aspect ratio of the iPhone X screen) but I could be wrong.

@@ThomasFlight Given how some directors like Christopher Nolan change the aspect ratio throughout a film, it would have been interesting if some of those shots (like the car ride) were shot in a wider format. But again, maybe iPhone doesn't shoot that way natively and this being kind of an ad, Chazelle didn't want to do lots of post production.

This is so counterproductive! Films have a horizontal format to purposely be assigned to the human sight. There are such ways to compose a shot in cinema while emphasizing on the center (for example, the famous door shot in The Searchers)! This is so stupid.
