Perfect word. This video gives you an IDEA of the experience I had seeing him live at the Anaheim Convention Center back around '78 or '79. Walked into this huge venue and surprised to see only a grand piano and a 6 string acoustic on one side in front of it, and a 12 string on the other with a chair and a mic. No band. I thought this guy has some balls. This was shortly after Phoenix had come out. He played everything, and nailed that title song (which must have Tullamore Dew preceeding of course (best part IMO as I play it as well)) and the lone man filled that place with energy, and of course his tenderness as well. He played like rhus for about 2 hours and capped it all off with There's a place in the world for a gambler. EVERYONE joined in on the choruses as he requested. Lighters all lit and swaying (yeah, cell phones didn't exist). Incredibly moving evening.

@@TheClimberbob1 I saw him numerous times, had tickets to see him at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga CA - great venue. Only problem, I was travelling a lot for work (3 weeks at a time), and I was going to be in Northern Virginia/Washington DC. Turns out he was playing Wolf Trap in 1997 and it was a solo acoustic tour. I bought a ticket there and they had just released ADA seats and I ended up in the 4th row. He was not only an amazing musician - he was really funny and personable - it was like you were in his living room.

Who would have thought that Dan could wail vocally and on guitar like this! Another feather in the master's musical hat! Wish he was still here with us! RIP Dan!

Anyone who had ever seen him perform this song before, knew to wait at the end of what seemed to be the end of the song before applauding...when he broke into that wonderful upbeat break at the end...damn, I miss seeing him so much... 🧡

Dan shows that he could play delta blues guitar with the greats of the genre. To me, he's right up there with Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Son House, Bonnie Raitt and Rory Block. Just one more of Dan's many many gifts.

I'd never heard him play any delta blues before. What sets him above all the others you mention is his set of pipes. I'd never heard him do a gravely voice before. This just tells me when you've got a voice, you can do everything better.

@@TheClimberbob1 - To hear more of Dan's delta blues, listen to "Statesboro Blues" (cover, Blind Willie McTell) and "Blow Wind Blow" (cover, McKinley Morgenfield, AKA the late, great Muddy Waters). Both of these are on Dan's "Live - Something Old, New, Borrowed and Some Blues" CD. (A totally AWESOME live CD!) By the way, Dan's electric guitar work on "Blow Wind Blow" will blow you away. Enjoy! Ever on! Kathleen You are absolutely right about Dan's vocal abilities. His voice has great range and is immensely versatile. He was an amazing human being of many gifts and talents. He is deeply missed.

Seriously, he's amazing, I wish I could hear "Leader of the Band" for the first time. He has so many songs that touch my heart, he is the best in my opinion, check out Netherlands, Exiles, and his first albums. unbelievable in my opinion. He is the sound track of my heart. I would play Leader of the Band for my dad, who is no longer with us, and he didn't really like music all that much, and he loved that song. Check out Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby's tomorrow. There is no better song for the Derby. Yet once again, he get's dismissed. Once again, these are my opinions. The fact that the Rock n Roll doesn't have him in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is disgusting to me. Check out his resume, he played all of the instruments on a couple of albums. When he started, he opened for the Eagles with just a Piano and his Guitar, and he killed it. The fact that he isn't in the Rock n Roll hall of fame is a sham. How could I take them seriously? But, the beauty for you, is to get to hear his music for the first time. Enjoy....

So much for that wimpy, falsetto singer/songwriter many people think of when they hear the name. Also, whether acoustic or electric, Dan was a masterful guitar player. Missing his music.

Slide. In the old days, some blues players used the necks off of glass bottles. Those delta blues pioneers were truly innovators.
