This song hit the airwaves in Los Angeles in late 1978, early 1979. I was a senior in high school and it was my first introduction to Dan Fogelberg. 'The Power of Gold' is such an awesome song and I love it as much today as I did back in 1978. A year later 'Phoenix' came out and I played that album literally until it wore out. The song 'Face The Fire' is, in my opinion the best song Dan ever wrote. I know the album 'The Innocent Age' gets all the love (and deservedly so), but 'Phoenix' will always be my absolute favorite Dan Fogelberg album.

Completely underrated. People who don't truly know his work assume he was a "soft rock" guy. New "musicians" don't write their own songs, sing without auto tune or play several instruments. Dan was the best.

I bought "Twin Sons of Different Mothers" and later, "Phoenix" in my junior and senior years of high school. They were the albums I blasted cruising the town with friends on Saturday nights or sitting by the lake watching the stars come out. Many years later, I was lucky enough to see Dan in Indianapolis on one of his last tours and he did not disappoint. Like so many others, It absolutely broke my heart when he passed. But what a legacy he left.

I feel sorry for any singer songwriter who dares to compare himself with Dan Fogelberg. It is him in a category all to himself. All others are way behind him. Lots of great music out there but there never was nor will there ever be one like him. Truly, comparatively speaking, Dec 16th 2007 was the day the music died

This song was well into his second set. It was recorded at the Fox in St. Louis in June 1991. Dan wasn't diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer until 2004, and he died 16 1/2 years after this video was shot. His hair was getting wild and sweaty by this point in the concert, and he eventually put it in a ponytail and donned a large headband. If you want to see him after he had played the entire concert, check out the video segment of There's A Place In The World For A Gambler, which was the encore for this concert. He still had plenty of energy left.

this means a lot more to me as an adult, I just loved the amazing musicianship of the radio version when I was 10-30+ but as I've gotten older, the lines "the women are lovely, the wine is superb, but there's something about the song that disturbs", and, "tell me that you're free of the power of gold", just makes me feel like it's sad that being wealthy/famous brings you what you want, because of the "power of gold", and it's disturbing, because is it really real, and would you have it without those things...

This video will live on and my well wishes to Jean. Saw him twice.. Both times just him and his guitar and maybe some background recordings.. Still, what a wonderful performance. This is so close to the original recording that it's almost better... Balance the cost with the soul you lost tell me you're free from the power of gold...

That’s interesting. I didn’t know the recorded version when I saw him live in 1987, but this performance of the song 4 years later was exactly as I remember it in 1987 - it was truly extraordinary to experience that.

This is the first time I see Dan Fogelberg on a Fender Stratocaster. I know him mainly as an acoustic player and ballad singer... but then again... I'm Dutch. In the Netherlands his most famous hit was "Longer" for which he used an Ibanez Artwood 12-string. The other one I like best is "The Leader of the Band" that he played on a Martin D-41. Fender Stratocasters are great planks, btw. I own two minty black ones too. One with Alnico pickups and one with Fender Lace Sensors (Strat Plus). It's nice to see that Dan had the same taste for electrics too.
