I saw Dan Fogelberg many times when I was a student at the University of Illinois in the late 60’s at the Red Herring Coffeehouse. He was very popular locally before he was discovered. He was great then and for the rest of his short life.

Stewball came back to life, with the master of storytelling at the helm!!I second the comment from TheLastNail. He was the "King" of the world in 1982. Dan Fogelberg exemplified what a true "Legend" really is!

I have never heard Dan Fogelberg sing this song but Wow, he really does a great version! Saw him in concert in L.A. during around the mid-90's. Great concert! Didn't have money at the time for tickets but then actually won tickets on a radio station. The seats were really, really far from the stage at an outdoor concert venue but at least had binoculars with us. So sad that he had to die so young.....Great musician, songwriter, singer! Cute too. :-))

Here's what I found on Wkipedia......American folk legend Woody Guthrie, who included an English and an American interpretation (both entitled Stewball) on tape, and recorded in Volume 4 of The Asch Recordings (1930-1940). Guthrie's cowboy version of the British ballad, with the same lyrics but a different tune, was recorded by John Herald and the Greenbriar Boys, and popularized by Peter, Paul and Mary.

I can’t believe you posted this. I was at that concert. He changed up his set to accommodate some strain in his voice. It still sounded great!

Heard a street musician play this at the Civic Center BART station today and then he pulled down his pants and pissed in front of everybody, then after pulling his pants back up he went to playing old classic folk songs. The police came a moment later though.

I just read that the Hollies were responsible for this song. No wonder Dan covered it, he was highly influenced by the group!

@turbogrammy I'm very aware of who recorded this originally.. my comment was to meant, that Dan was influenced by the Hollies who also covered this song, which may have influenced him from a young boy/ man which led him to the song.. I don't find your humor in that.. oh well.. your opinion, I guess! Dan covered the Hollies ,Tell Me to My Face, which was on his Twin Sons Different Mother album.. just in case you need that FYI.
