This could have been written for me. I wish I had told a boy how i felt, before ours lives took different directions..i did take on a husband and child and lived somewhere in pennsylvania..He heard the wind call his name and went to California...Im in my 60s and still think of him...

"....sing that old song that we used to know, but this time sing, this time sing just a little more slowly." That line just guts me. For me this is DF's best song. I've always thought the studio version was a bit overproduced and the vocals too buried. Great to hear this more stripped down version. Brilliant writer and musician.

My daughter grew up listening to Dan, she used to say mommy play deep in the snow foot prints, so I'd fire up the turntable and we'd rock out.i had this song and to the morning played at her memorial, my sweet angel is walking deep in the snow leaving footprints and for me to the morning, helps me to get up and realize, there is no way to say no to the morning, his music touching me still

I started listening to popular/rock music in 1961. Now, 47 years later, I can say with certainty that "The Last Nail" is one of my top five all-time favorites. (But I've never been able to narrow the top five down to a #1.)
@garyjones3625 Жыл бұрын
That’s how top 5’s work… all are worthy and equal to top billing @ #1. I’d have to agree this song is probably in my top 5 as well.

I love this song, though it takes me back to a very difficult time in the my life (the death of a girl I was close to). Still, it's one of the best of Dan's best. Definitely the best song on "Captured Angel." I saw him perform this twice, the only disappointment being that he didn't have a band with him. It was still great seeing him sing it live.

Thanks, Tim!! Gotta luv Captured Angel! A little trivia on the Album. Chartered #23 on Billboard in 1975. Went Platinum in sales, no singles were produced. Pretty impressive!! This is one of those albums,if you don't have in your collection,Get It!My favorite part is when Man in the Mirror is bridged together with Below the Surface.I just love it, when he rocked out! Dan Fogelberg left his footprints on many hearts and souls. Great video quality! Thanks for the sharing!

@mlusby: That's one thing I like about Dan's "lost love" songs: They aren't about "broken hearts" or "pity," they are about people who loved, broke, and then got on with their lives (as in "Old Tennessee," "Auld Lang Syne," Last Nail," etc.) Sure, he had his "Missing You" moments ... but those are "right now" love hurts type themes. Dan handles the "loved from long ago" better than any artist I have ever heard.

During the early to mid 80's DF was @ AZ St Univ on an acoustic tour...ONE Grand Piano, 6-7 guitars and Dan Fogelberg on stage....magnficant!

I remember that to tour and at the start when he plays accompanied by a violin artist the mural of the aspen trees lighting up from the background as he sits at the piano and plays Aspen. One of the first songs err preludes I learned to play on the piano.

Dan Fogelberg is one of those artists that touched the hearts of so many young and old. An Illinois boy that grew up "unaffected" by the East and West myth. Dancing Shoes was my favorite. I still think of Kelly L. Netherlands and Dan Fogelberg will always live in our hearts and time.

I saw Dan at Bowling Green University in the late 70's I think. It was such an incredible concert. He was alone on stage in the middle of the audience and the college crowd went wild with appreciation for his amazing music. Suddenly, he broke a guitar string on his acoustic and he seemed in shock, not knowing what to do. Said "This has never happened before" Someone handed him an electric guitar and started jamming on it something tribal and the whole crowd just stood up and cheered for him

Absolutely the most incredible "live" performer I have ever seen in my life, and I've been going to concerts since I was 14 (1966). And SOLO??? Only Neil Young comes even CLOSE! I play (guitar), and sometimes I'm lucky enough to have the "spook" on this one when I play it in front of anyone, maybe 1/2 dozen friends. He does this, and many more in front of 14 THOUSAND! Thank god I was younger, now, I'd have to wear a diaper, 'cause I'd pee my fuckin' pants seeing him "live"

Thank you for posting this. I just turned 28 and Dan's music has made life so much better. No matter where you are, his music makes it better ( at work, driving down the back roads, at a cook out, or just sitting around drinking some beer ) his music just gives me a natural high. Thank you Dan, R.I.P.

"I left a trail of footprints deep in the snow, I swore one day I would retrace them. But when I turned around I found that the wind had erased them, now I'll never replace them." Oh my GOD! One of modern music's BEST stanzas! Who CAN"T RELATE to that??? Awesome, Dan. I wish I'd been able to tell you, to your face, how much a part of my teens and early adult life you and your music were. You defined me. Thank you, Dan, for everything. Thank you.

Thank you so much for posting this song. my late wife loved this song and Dan. Broke her heart when Dan passes. We lived in Colorado when this album came out and fit the times. Every time I listen to this song I feel at peace and knowing she is snuggled on the couch bottle of red with a stack of Albums to play with me in my imagination. The fire place crackling and the snow blowing outside in the night the front porch lamp swings reflecting off the white bark of the Aspens on each side of the pourch.. Miss your music Dan and my lovely wife, best times of my life was with you as my muse. We played many of your songs my friends and I duet acoustic gig. God rest my friend.

For me it’s “but if you ever should need a man, well the offer still stands.” Can you imagine being the subject of a song knowing this is written for you…..

I saw you running ahead of the crowd I chased but never thought I'd catch you You said you loved me but you had to be free and I let you Why did I let you? We walked together through the gardens and graves I watched you grow to be a woman Living on promises that nobody gave to no one They were given to no one I started listening to the wind and the rain You strained your ears but could hear nothing One night, I thought I heard them whisper my name And I went running I left a trail of footprints deep in the snow I swore one day, I would retrace them But when I turned around, I found that the wind had erased them Now I'll never replace them Fly away, my sweet bird, over the land Take life for all the freedom you can But if you ever should need a man Well, the offer still stands I hear you've taken on a husband and child And live somewhere in Pennsylvania I never thought you'd ever sever the string But I can't blame you none So let the ashes fall and lay where they will Just say that, once, you used to know me One last time, sing that old song we used to know But this time, sing (this time, sing) This time, sing just a little more slowly Fly away, my sweet bird, over the land Take life for all the freedom you can But if you ever should need a man Well, the offer still stands
