What makes the quitting look even worse is Charvarious Ward, a man who lost his daughter a few weeks ago, is playing and Campbell decided not to. No way that flies in that specific locker room much less any locker room.

not only that...but go down the roster...Pearsall, shot in the chest at the beginning of the season...played. Trent Williams and his wife just lost twins and he's hurt...tried to play...Fred Warner, playing with a fractured ankle...naa man...that dude won't even be seen in that building anymore. even if he's kept on the team (and just suspended) because of draft pick / financial reasons...he's done, and his career's done.

I take the point, but I think it's the wrong path to compare to the Ward situation. It's setting up a kind of phony virtue scale where playing football is somehow important in the face of personal tragedy. Play, don't play, we've got no right assessing Ward (even in praise, because it implies taking more time off is less virtuous). Campbell is an entirely different situation. A fit of pique is totally scorn-worthy.

He acted like he was playing pee wee football instead of professional football. You get paid to play football the way the coaches and organization decide, and your team had to win so this guy probably just played his last game as a professional. Maybe the game before this one was his last as a professional!

Actually he is a bad player. He is really bad against the run. If you watch the games he always shoots the wrong gap. He doesn't even wait to see which gap is being ran to he just goes to one and doesn't care. In coverage he gets burned more than anybody else on the team. He single handedly lost them more than a few games. He is always being picked on. The other teams know exactly where to go.

He's done in the NFL with this stunt. With a 9-year career he's probably set money-wise (if he managed it well) but his football reputation is shot. Everything he ever did as a football player from HS through college, and with the pros is now tarnished by this. He'll always be remembered as the guy who quit on his team in the middle of a game. If he'd only played one more quarter of football he probably could have gone to the 49'ers after the game and said he's done and it would have been a minor story...if it was even a story at all. They probably would have quietly released him, as happens to players all the tim,e and his football reputation would be intact. But doing it in the middle of game just put a big old asterisk next to his name for life.

Not proud of this, but as a "people pleaser" myself, I think I recognize the behavior. He probably should have spoken up more before the game but was afraid of the consequences that would ensue. So instead he stewed over it the whole game, resentment building with each play he was not on the field. When he was finally asked to go in, he snapped. We all have bad moments. I'm sure he regrets how he handled this and feels guilt and shame about it. I hope he can move on with his life now that his NFL career is over. He's probably not a bad guy, just someone who hasn't really learned to love himself and advocate for himself in a healthy way.

He's had a 9 year career. That check has been cashed, same as the checks he accepted to play for SF. Which means not only that what he did was an act of cowardice, it also a violation of contract that justifies an immediate release. He forfeited his remaining pay with what he did.
