Dan Roodt: We take the old South African flag to the street

After the Equality Court banned it, Dan Roodt (strictly for academic reasons) quizzed some people in the street on whether they felt "hurt" by the old South African flag as the judge and various left-wing organisations had claimed.

I had some bad experiences under apartheid but I have put that in the past. Today I live amongst white people and they are my best friends. If there are people out who still love the flag, let them keep it and display it in their homes. I don't see a problem with that and South Africa Has bigger problems to worry about.

I have a similar opinion as an American regarding the old Confederate Battle Flag. I personally see the flag more as a symbol of chaos and treason, but I have friends and family who see it as a positive symbol. I may disagree with them, but I respect and support their right to freedom of speech to own and fly the flag. I see America has much bigger domestic and foreign problems than obsessing over the past.

I was raised in school to respect and honour that flag. Every year we would sing that flags anthem along with the nations anthem. You can´t just tell someone to forget their upbringing. You can´t expect someone to hate something they were taught to respect and honour. I hate no one, I love and respect all races, and I will always feel honour and pride towards that flag.

That flag was used since the Union Of South Africa was formed in 1910 and used in republic until the new flag came into use in March 1994.

Thus, not an apartheid flag. It actually came into being in 1928. Previously, from 1910, were flags with the Union Jack at the canton top left, and coat of arms by the centre. That's a little known part of South African history.

It represents a racist regime that existed long before 1948.

He gave the correct answer... That he's not offended because he does not know it. How can the reporter expect them to be offended by the flag if they don't know it.. If he really wanted to get the true feelings of the people, he should have asked the older folks who had the experience of apartheid. That is biased reporting. And yes, the person posting it was very wrong for doing so, and should be reprimanded because he knew full well what he was doing and what the flag represents.

Inhuman things were done against blacks during apartheid era. They’re still trying to heal and move on but it is really hard do that when SOME White are constantly pocking their wounds. I think displaying this flag wherever you choose to display it shows a lake of empathy then anything. As young black South African I personally don't feel anything about the flag because I was born after Apartheid and never experienced an of the evils of the old government, but I fully support the ban because it would be insensitive to put aside the feeling and not acknowledge what the majority of the people who went through the evils of apartheid. The flag is equivalent to the Nazi flag in most South Africans eyes, so the ban is actually quite fair.

Put this way: it predates the apartheid regime by many years so I don't think it should have been banned. I understand there are people who might get offended when they see it and I completely understand, but people get offended when someone has tattoos so should we ban tattoos? Not allowed to own a piece of la, just renting for generations. No accumulation of wealth. Loss of land, livestock and all the wealth accumulated from the first generstion. No freedom of speech, no self determination. Being stopped on the road and beaten everyday, young and adults indisreminately. One can go on and on...That's what the flag represent and reminds us.

Young White graduates have jobs while millions of Black graduates do not have. What the minority (both Whites and the Blach elites) South Africans should know is that the majority of South Africans (the poor masses) are loosing patiance as days and years go by with their hardships not being attended to. We all know what it means if people take it upon themselves to dismantle the system for inclusivity. The Whites and Black elites should know they continue to be arrogant, to play victim and ignorant at their own perrile.

The Majority of adults Whate and Black South Africans are the perpetrators and victims of apostate respectively. Many of us were born and lived in apartheid. If the current systematic economic setup is not addressed even our future offsprings shall still be victims of apartheid. As some of us put it 'We shall remain a defeated nation'. tThere is no way we can leave the status quo remain. We shall completely dismantle the apartheid economic system in our lifetime.
