I was convincing myself that this was Gary Oldman doing an impression of Dana Carvey doing an impression of Jimmy Stewart.

I haven't seen it for years, and have never found it on YT, but in the 90s, Dana did an impression of Jimmy Stewart as Dracula. "I'm gonna suck ya... suck ya *dry*..." it was freaking amazing.

That's such a pitch perfect impression. Totally convincing, I can *see* him. And as with all great impressions, it's my just the voice but the vocabulary, the timing. The "look away... now look back at it" feels so familiar like it's taken from Rear Window or Vertigo. Love it!

I had that same timeframe as Dana did with Jimmy Stewart. It probably started for me in 1973, as I used to see his appearances on the tonight show along with movies like “it’s a wonderful life” and “the Man who shot liberty valance.” I loved the… the …the inflections and…..and…… the pauses…… and…I…I…I…I found myself…ah…ah…ah…stammering…just a little……and it just came to me.

Many people will talk of Will Ferrell being the greatest ever on SNL. Dana Carvey was quite possibly the greatest performer on this show ever. That Will Ferrell era did have skits that everyone would laugh at, but Dana Carvey could quite possibly do anything, and regardless of if it were 87 or 93, he'd find a laugh in every sketch. He's my number 1 no matter what. Such a broad spectrum, and not too many misses. The best. My High school years were imitating his Jimmy Stewart and Travolta. A total enabler of me being a dork.

Best on SNL? My short list would include Dan Aykroyd, Will Ferrell, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman and Bill Hader. So hard to pick from those five legends, but I'd probably go with Will Ferrell.

One lie is when he says "We didn't have tape recorders then" referring back to 1975. Well I had a tape recorder as a kid in 1970. And we weren't rich either if that's what you're thinking. I still have the tapes although I threw the recorder away years ago.
@charlie-obrien Жыл бұрын
He didn't have a tape recorder. I don't think he meant they didn't exist. I also had a tape recorder in 1971 and my brother used it to record songs off the radio. Then I recorded over those with my 11 yr old comedy (Nixon and such) impressions... Man, that was a beating to remember! 🤕😀

It's fast, but right at the beginning, when Dana hears "impression of jimmy Stewart", you can see him immediately begin pulling his bottom lip, shaping it. Are these the purposeful hands of a master being called to perform, or a psychosomatic reaction to the words "impression of jimmy stewart"? The world may never know.
@conni2you Жыл бұрын
Dana Carvey has had a stand-up comedy special on HBO in the early to mid 90s and that is where I first remember him telling this bit about Jimmy Stewart and Katharine Hepburn. I remember it’s also where the Choppin broccoli song came from and where he kept saying F***ing 49ers. Anyway, I thought the bit was funny. Honestly I thought the whole special was funny.
