Great video HG. I think the initial plan for the translation planned to rename Yuko as "Syd", hence "Syd of Valis". But somewhere down the line the localization team ran short of time, money, and/or care. Also, I believe back in the day, people working on localizing manuals were often working with vague ideas that may or may not be in the game. Especially with NES games. Where you'd end up with the manual saying something completely different from what was seen in the game.
@hungrygoriya4 жыл бұрын
I thought it might have just been a misspelling of SD Valis, but then it makes you wonder why people in the game would go around calling her super deformed... it's a weird one for sure. And yeah, I've experienced the manual troubles in many games in the past, like Bionic Commando for example where they even mixed up which buttons were for which controls. The manual for this one was okay overall, but it's far from great English. Much better than some things I've read though.
@SaadAzim4 жыл бұрын
I think the name was changed from "SD Valis" to "Syd of Valis" because the publisher was concerned that North American audiences wouldn't understand what an "SD" was. Admittedly, I've always wondered why they didn't go with something like "Mega Valis", or "Mighty Valis". :D

Yuko looks so much more grown-up on the box art; am I the only one who wishes her business suit was one of her in-game costumes? My experience with this series worked in full reverse: I played Super Valis IV (with its confusing *who are these people* instruction manual story) on September 1st, 1993, then bought Valis III in April 1995 (oh, *that's* who everyone is), then finally played through the then-unavailable Genesis ones I had seen in K-Mart (back when I didn't have the system 8 years earlier) in 1999. It was confusing and amazing and rather Sailor Moon-before-Sailor Moon when one thinks about it. Thank you for drawing attention to it in this review!
@hungrygoriya4 жыл бұрын
It would've made for a good costume, absolutely! And it's interesting that you came at the series from the other end entirely... I hope it didn't feel terrible moving backwards through the games but I also love the Sailor Moon-ness of the whole thing too. I loved that show growing up and it was fun getting back to something that felt like home, at least in theory here!

The bounding box here was driving me nuts. I _so badly_ wanted the screen to start scrolling immediately and just keep Yuko locked pretty much in the center - having to move her over _even a little bit_ (around 2/3rds of the way across the screen) to start scrolling seems problematic with these (admittedly great-looking) huge chibi sprites. Especially when you mentioned the skittish speed issues and problems with precision movement. Still, at least the chaos didn't seem frustrating, and I admit, I laughed at the sequence @ 3:37. Something about that particular sequence of pratfalls and misses, topped off with that face-plant, just looked perfect, so maybe it's all working as intended, lol. Awesome review. I did not know this game existed. I actually knew *about* SD Valis because I know they did promotional comics for some other game or project with those designs (like where you got the image seen at 7:01. I've seen that before: vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/valis/images/0/03/1642283-sdvalismanual01.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120221223530 ), but I had no idea this cute little brand actually got, like, an actual game release. And one with one of the worst translations ever, it seems! I'm almost certain that "Syd" came from someone simply not knowing what to do with "SD Valis," and they just... tried to turn it into a name? God. I feel bad for Telenet that they had a bunch of goons working on localizing their games for the West back in the day. Thanks for checking out, and showing off, such a bizarre release.
@hungrygoriya4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree about centering the character on screen... having that little bit of extra time to react would've gone a long way in making the game feel more manageable at times. And that sequence you mentioned with the face plant was completely candid! I think it's it's pretty impossible to be perfect in that game, though I'm sure there are speedrunners somewhere out there that can do it! And yeah, the image I used there was from the Japanese version's manual. I wanted to share those images so much more since they're in colour and the scan I found online of the English one was not the best quality, but I digress. I'm glad you found out about the North American version though. Hopefully you can give it a try sometime!

Valis is such a wild franchise, bit it's certainly never dull. It's always a series I've wanted to get into, and the prices on this one are surprisingly tame for a retro game. I gotta say, I do have a soft spot in my heart for games from the 80s and 90s that kept their original Japanese art and character names without overlocalizing them

That comic strip is so amusing! Yuko's pudding rage reminds me of the hilarious chibi moods from the anime Dragon Half. And I love her walking to school with that sword! So funny. I used to be Valis fan as a kid and remember when this game came out. I only read about it back then and It's great to finally see it in action. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. I usually get turned off by the chibi style (it repels me from Bravely Default, for example) but I like the look of this one. My favorite SD game is Alex Kidd in Shinobi World. Did you happen to get that particular chibi game in your now legendary SMS haul back in the day? Another quality video. The editing at around 3:40 and the end was well done as always. As a fan of the Valis series, I'd say that even the Turbo CD version of Valis 2 is my least favorite entry (other than Valis X; we don't talk about Valis X); it's not bad, but doesn't quite stand up to the other games in the series. The versions of 1 and 3 on the Genesis and 4 on the SNES really captivated me, not just as Action titles, but also with their stylish and detailed visuals. Oh, and Vecanti is the world in which the Valis games take place, if you're still wondering.

Seeing how it took elements of the computer and PC Engine versions of Valis 2 I wish they made a more serious effort. Not that I mind SD spin offs (Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds is great) but they clearly didn't have time to polish up the mechanics or physics. It'd also have been nice to have the three Yuko games, with consistent game and art design, together on the Mega Drive. It has some good presentation, tiny elements of fun when the level design allows, but pretty dissapointing considering the series. We all know Valis isn't where you go for mind blowing game design, but the charm of fun gameplay w/90s anime stylings is what makes the series worth playing.
@hungrygoriya11 ай бұрын
I agree with you! This is the first Valis game I ever played (I haven't finished any of the others yet, but I've dabbled) and it definitely feels like the least polished one. It's cute and has some interesting ideas, but in terms of the execution, it definitely lacks in a few important ways. I know there have been some recent releases of some of the Valis titles by Retrobit on the Genesis as well as some Switch collections, but having the original Valis 2 on the Mega Drive/Genesis would've been a lot nicer as an option.

Great review! Valis is one of those series I still haven't gotten around to trying a game but want to. I didn't really know much one, and some of those translation and advertising choices are pretty odd. You want to know why Yuko is referred to as Syd during the game's cutscenes? Simply because the game was called Syd of Valis, and I guess the localizers wanted to justify that name. Except... that name itself is a mistranslation of "SD Valis." ...Yeah, not even kidding. The people in charge of translating this game didn't even know what SD was, so they decided it must be the character's name. Makes all the other mistranslations seem less surprising, when you realize that. ;)

Wait. Wait, wait wait, wait. That enemy in the first stage that looks like a lizard with a fez is the one they used in one of the millions of Pokemon bootlegs out there. I've always wondered where they stole that from! The large sprites sort of makes it feel like the Mega Man port on the Game Gear, where you had this zoomed in view of the screen. The difference of course is that Mega Man wasn't designed with that in mind, so there are death traps everywhere since you can't see anything. This entire game reminds of something for the Game Gear, in fact. There's just something about those large sprites. Some of the random characters on the cover are from other Telenet games like the Cosmic Fantasy series, but only the second game in that series was ever localized. The TG-16 Super CD ROM ROM format does indeed bring better sound (CD right?) than the Genesis's Yamaha sound chip. However, beyond adding extra storage it is not technically more capable than a Genesis. I can understand why you might think that it does and that is okay, you are not alone. The TG-16 CD ROM does not include any extra hardware like the Sega CD did. This is why you are required to have a System Card to run any game that came out for it. Basically an NEC/Hudson System Card contains the bios for the CD Rom and extra memory depending on the version. Which made the cost of the TG-16 CD ROM ROM quite perplexing. The Sega CD was 100 dollars cheaper all while increasing the Genesis's capabilites.

No matter the version, I can't bring myself to like Valis 2 all that much, despite loving the original, as well as 3 and 4. This super deformed version of Valis 2 suffers the worst. Yes the sprites are all cute, but the controls are absolutely awful. For me the only way to see the entire game without frustration is to use the built in invincibility code, but that sucks the challenge right out, but makes the game actually bearable. And for goodness sake, all other Valis games with Yuko in them keep her name intact, but this one they call her Syd, which is absolutely ridiculous.

There are some very slippery spots in this game where the platforming was a bit tricky, and getting hammered in the boss fights with very little i-frame advantage was also challenging. I've yet to play the other Valis games, but I look forward to them!

Just one question - what were they THINKING with re-naming her "Syd"? Also I couldn't get past the second stage with this terrible platforming. On the other hand, I gotta say I like these graphics with chibi characters.

Someone mentioned that the game was SD Valis in Japan for "super-deformed", big chibi style, and they apparently thought her name must be Syd while localizing. Seems plausible I guess. One of the items you get gives your character too much speed. In general, she feels way too fast and quite slippery the whole game but you can at least do a lot of correction after you initiate a jump... it's sometimes just not enough.

Never seen this one. No PAL release I reccon. Doesn't look fantastic...

It's not a super great game but it's fun for an afternoon. I'd like to try the original Valis 2.
