An old born and raised west Baltimorean here. Interesting that you came upon one of the old brick paved streets that still survive. The city put white bricks down the middle as a lane marking and also did that at crosswalks. The street light post at the start of the video is an old gas lamp post that was converted to electric sometime mid-century. We still had gas street lamps in our neighborhood in the early 1950s with those same style posts. Speaking of gas lamps, that first collapsed house you peered into showed some of the old gas piping hanging down from the original gaslight system that had been in the walls and ceilings. Usually the average size rowhouse had a higher first floor ceiling to allow for gasoliers or combination gas/electric chandeliers. The upper floors would only have a gas wall sconce or two in each room with lower ceilings. Baltimore did not look like this when I was growing up there. Even the lower income areas were generally kept neat and clean.

I know it's probably been your home for most of your life. You have had wonderful times there. But honestly I've never heard anything good about Baltimore. The crime, drugs, I thought it was exaggerated. But damn 😞
@shortliner68
@shortliner68 4 ай бұрын
@@rickwhitson2804 Yeah, in some ways it was a different city back in the '50s and '60s when I was growing up there. It wasn't perfect by any means...there was still the crime, drugs, and homelessness that is common to most urban areas. But it wasn't nearly to the extent as seen today. I think one reason was that there were plenty of jobs - Baltimore was a working city. Bethlehem Steel alone provided Baltimore with thousands of jobs. People all around the city could then afford to keep their homes up. You didn't see abandoned rowhomes with their interiors collapsing or a lot of boarded up properties. It was safe to shop and eat downtown, even in the evenings. A couple nights during the week all the big department stores stayed open late. I can remember my mother and I shopping downtown in the evening. Nobody bothered you and we didn't ever fear being victims of criminal activities.

I look at the ripped wallpaper hanging off the walls and think that once upon a time, somebody chose that pattern from a catalogue and got excited about decorating their home. Thanks Dan (and Hi Dylan!) 💜

These old buildings, with their exposed brick and timber, makes me think about the people who built them. How different their lives were to our modern life. How those bricks and timber were probably transported to the site by some of the first trucks or horse and buggy. Some of those bricks and timber probably haven't seen the light of day since the house was built! Fascinates me every time

This neighborhood looked like it could have once been nice. It's very poignant seeing both the bandos and the few suites that (possibly?) have tenants still living in functioning units that are mixed in-between the ruins who stay in these places because of economic difficulties, old age and not willing or able to move, reasons of attachment etc ... Your videos are thought provoking, thank you Dan.

It's really sad seeing those houses and knowing that when they were first occupied people were happy with their families, decorating their home, making dinners and eating those meals together... Now some demolished and others just completely falling down... 😔 Wonderful but sad video ❤

I'm a local and have wondered this, too. I met Dan this past NYE, but I've seen him out in public shopping before we met, and I didn't want to disturb him. However, it appears to be split 50/50. Loads of people know Dan, and others don't, but once they find out about him, they come back and say they love his content. His documentaries and urbexing videos are big on the locals.

What especially sucks about seeing townhouses like these abandoned is that America’s zoning would make it illegal to build these today. This is a special type of housing that can’t be replicated (in terms of form and materials!)
@eaanyills
@eaanyills Жыл бұрын
Zoning doesn’t make row houses illegal. A new row house project just went up around the block from me. The main issue is that anywhere new row houses would be desirable is already probably insanely desirable… and the low density would make it hard to turn a profit when a developer could just toss up a huge apartment building.

It's crazy to me how these are basically townhouse-style homes and one can be completely dilapidated while next door can be painted and occupied. There must be some kind of structural integrity problems there. I'm wondering how that goes over with city planning or if they turn a blind eye to it until it's just completely a neighborhood issue?

Imagine how freaky it sounds to be living in the one house and hearing the abandoned house on either side of you collapsing into itself as time goes on. Would make you wonder if your house was going to collapse along with them. These houses were built to support one another. When one collapses it can cause uneven loading and support on the common wall which can lead to wall failure. That's why when a rowhouse is demolished properly the exposed common walls are reinforced with an additional brick/block wall to keep them from collapsing.

I sooo wish we as a collective society in the US would address the root cause of addiction and drug use instead of tossing folks in jail over and over again and thinking that in any way is going to help. It's like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. Another thing that bothers me is that there are so many empty buildings just sitting around -- I wish there was a way old buildings could be given a second chance in life by giving people who've had a rough go another chance in life. Great video.
