I worked at Stewart's Department Store on Howard St. right across from Hecht's and Hutzler's, in 1970. When I drove down Howard St. In the late 1980's, I felt very depressed
@jacobrosenberg84238 жыл бұрын
As a kid, I remember those department stores in the 60s and 70s and they were all gone buy the 80s. Also, they tried to open one, it was Hutzlers or Hechts at the Inner Harbor at a mall they build in the Equitable bank building that failed rather quickly in the late 70s. Retail has changed much everywhere, I buy 90% of my things except food, online. It its sad to see that Baltimore is in such decay, it was, and still such a great place. Now I live in in a place that is expected to have another 1m residents by 2040. I wish Baltimore would get its act together and turn decay into growth. Great videos guys!

You make a good point about these being the original dead malls. First the malls killed the department stores. Then the malls died. I don't think that retail will ever comeback to what it was. It looks like that are tearing a lot of those Howard street buildings down, which is really sad. These buildings could be gutted, and turned into nice loft apartments. With the light rail tracks are right outside, it looks like it would be a really convenient place for people to live.

Nooo first the department store killed the mail order business! You know how huuuuuge Sears was in the mid 19th century to early 20th century?? It was massive!!! Google it you'll love the rabbit hole. My great grandma forgot Much almost everything she owned from Sears mail order. They could even deliver houses 🤷🏼♀️😂 literally anything you could want would be delivered and COD too!

Hutzler's was the last Department Store to close in that area in 1989 having been a part of the street for over 100 years, started in 1858! Indeed so were 9 other shops around Maryland. Started by the Hutzler Brothers Company. Interesting stuff Dan and Will. Very eerie but lovely at the same time. Must have been something in its day. Thank you. Hope your throat is better - I have it too.

Howard Street in the 70's and 80's had become antique shops when I lived in the Baltimore area.
@DanBellFilmIt8 жыл бұрын
“Antique Row” was once a really popular spot in the 60s, 70s and 80s for antique collectors with dozens of shops. Not anymore though. Only a couple of the original antique dealers remain.

Thanks for commenting Dan. I used work up in Hunt Valley when I lived out that way and would ride the light rail into Baltimore. It would go down Howard Street and Baltimore tried to revive it but it had gone down hill before I left and that was back in 2004. By the way, I like your Dead Malls series very professionally put together and I have gotten to see alot of the malls I use to frequent when living in the Baltimore area.

Hi Dan your videos are great thank you for them. I might be able to say why the floors are gone I used to work removing old wood floors from vacant buildings in Gary In and the Chicago area that were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s The reason why was because people building new houses with wood floors want that wood for the fact that if you measure the old wood it's a true cut of 2 in by 4 in or 2 in by 8 in. As todays 2 x 4s and 2 x 8s measure 1 3/4 x 3 x 3/4 - 7x3/4 and is usually warped and the old wood is settled. Rick might also agree

I rented a house on Howard near Wyman Park (close to the Paper moon, although not sure it was there yet-?) in '97-98. It was a row home obviously but beautiful. I love around the five minute mark when you're panning up to show the other floors, there's a cool old door into open air off to the left on the second level. And the tin ceilings! I'm always a big fan of those. It's a bit surprising no one's stripped those for the metal (tho I'm not sure how valuable tin is compared to something like copper wiring.

Being able to see how the buildings were built in their dissected state with their systems exposed and the decay are what fascinated me. You can still see many details from the interiors still intact at the same time, such as the fitting rooms. How about them washing machines still in the rubble? I find these buildings ideal candidates for building models of for a model railroad, as I enjoy building miniature structures in N-scale, and my level of craftsmanship is amazing!

I'm still stunned that the light rail line didn't cause Howard to gentrify in the 25 years since it went in. It's not like all of Baltimore is failing. There are all sorts of thriving businesses just a few blocks away, but Howard remains stubbornly destitute.

wow even tho the buildings are in a bad state of decay its anazing to see a vintage department stores interior and how big they were! im guessing the first store was planned to be demolished and they scrapped. flooring & fixures on the upper levels since alot of vintage stores used real wood and marble or tiles but never tore it down afterwards.

This is seriously cool, but I do worry for your safety. I'd be so nervous that an old wall would just collapse or falling through the floor of course. I used to live in an old town with a lot of abandoned buildings like this, and a wall just fell off onto some people walking by one day. But thank you for going to these places for those of us who are too nervous lol!
@DanBellFilmIt8 жыл бұрын
I do think about this a lot. A building that Will and I tried to get into this day just collapsed onto Howard Street a couple of weeks ago. Abandoned buildings in Baltimore are so bad. They’re always rotted, wet and ready to cave in. I’m just obsessed with old retail though so I’ll risk death. Ha.

Very sad I grew up in Mt Vernon and we did all our shopping down town. I remember when My parents and I would go to the old China Doll on Park Ave. In the day that little remote part of the city would be called China Town and would even have the Chinese New Year Parade right in through there complete with the giant dragon. We moved out of the city 9-1970 and was a part of the mass exit of the city. So sad to see what it has become. I am now 63 years old.
