People used paneling back in the day because it was a cheap way to cover old perhaps damaged plaster walls. Sometimes covering beautiful woodwork. My parents used paneling to cover old yucky walls after a kitchen fire. It was cheap and easy to install. Years later they tore it down and completely remodeled our home. I live in it now. It's a beautiful folk home built in 1812.

Lived in baltimore all my life. BGF is one of the largest gangs in baltimore city. Black Gorilla Family I believe? That's why you found the drug paraphernalia it was most likely a gang trap house with the numbers. You made a good guess most definitely a trap house. BGF uses a lot of bible stuff as code also but most likely was an active corner that the sellers would rotate shifts and whatnot. Be safe Dan! I've been in plenty of bandos in Baltimore, never know what you'll run into, or who

Hi Dan, Just another night in paradise. Wow. You guys are brave going into the West Baltimore triangle at night. Brave or crazy? Not sure which, maybe a bit of both. I'm surprised by the few rats you saw. Then the dying one explains it. They must have done a recent neighborhood bait to kill them off. They do that when they get real bad. You never cease to amaze me Dan, the places you go with no fear. I hope you're packin? You go into the worst places. One of these days I'm afraid your luck will run out my friend. I'm afraid you'll run into some junkie trying to get his fix, thinking you're there to take his stuff and it's gonna get ugly. It happens all the time. I pray to God to keep you all safe. I hope it helps. The world has gotten so mean and nasty. You never know what type of person you're going to run in to. I've been here from the beginning and I'll be here till the end. Blessings to you and yours. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures. Your Faithful Follower, Kathy B. (Fairylady0227) 💜

They call it a "railroad apartment" when you have to go through one room to get to the next (like the bedrooms you mentioned). I've come across many of them and it would be a nightmare to live in but certainly better than nothing. They're common in NYC and surrounding areas.

Walking through one bedroom to access another isn't uncommon in older houses. Usually the parents take the back room and the kids would have the front bedroom. It's especially common in older single family homes converted to apartments.

I grew up in the time when all that brown paneling started appearing. I remember how wonderful middle class/working class people like my parents thought it was. It was considered somehow superior to painted walls and especially old-fashioned wallpaper (which I loved). You started seeing it everywhere. My mother had some paneling put up, but fortunately it was light-colored. Still ... I think part of the appeal was the walls didn't have to be painted. I began to have an aversion toward it early on. It was so depressing. I love seeing the old wallpapers underneath some of the paneling in old buildings. 70s decor has not held up.

6:28 Man I miss wood paneling first place I lived was the finished basement of my grandparents house that they built in the 60s and it had some clean ass wood paneling. Shit just looks more genuine/natural n comfy too and I prefer it to a plaster wall slathered in chemicals that have micro particles that you'll end up breathing in on a daily basis but I guess that's just me.

I had to stop at 6:41 to comment: Dan, that paneling was even flimsier than you said! We used that when we added a room onto our summer cottage and it's a whopping *3mm* thick---less than 1/8 inch. Lovely! We even covered the ceiling with it and standing in the doorway looking across the ceiling at night, it looked like pecan-colored waves! Good thing it didn't move or you'd get mal de mer.

Great video Dan. Regarding the building I get the feeling that this wasn't built as an apartment block and was probably a single unit house before being converted to apartments. I think the narrow staircase is a clue to that but also the layout and small dimensions of the rooms. I am guessing it was renovated in the early '70s and converted in apartments then as a lot of the alterations that you made reference to seem to be of that era - eg wood panelling, the suspended polystyrene type ceiling panels, but also the fake stone cladding on the exterior.

I am new to you! I just love watching everything Dan Bell. I have the same thoughts you do while you film these places; questions of what it must have looked like in its heyday, who lived in these places at one point, why didn’t they leave all this stuff of meaning- like pictures, where did they go? I do have one question that I haven’t heard from you... who owns all of these places? Who is paying they taxes? Just seems like if it was in the cities hands they would put these things out for a chance at life again. Just so sad to see all these beautiful places and materials just turn back to dirt. I feel that maybe something could be done. I feel for Baltimore and the crime and drugs. It’s heartbreaking. Just wondering what’s being done, if anything. Thanks Dan for all your work.
