Good info. Some say to "remove the white" showing right of your fingers to the curved seam. I have found that with the curved seam to the left, if I hold it same way (fingers to the left side of ball and more pressure with index finger), the ball will cut to the right (I am right handed.). Which I had known all this as a player and coach years ago but we never stop trying to learn. Hence, thanks for all your videos.

It’s actually not gyro spin that’s introduced. Gyro spin won’t cause the ball to move. If you were to draw a line that goes through the axis of rotation for the ball, that line should still be parallel to the plane the ball travels through (think of a plane that makes a big wall) If that line isn’t parallel then there would be some gyro spin. You can also think of it this way. If a ball had fully gyro spin (rotating like a football), the line would pass through from the front to the back of the ball which would be perpendicular to the plane it travels through, which means that spin wouldn’t have any effect on the ball breaking
@DanBlewett7 күн бұрын
no, sorry you're wrong on this. no one is saying it's ALL gyro spin. It's obviously not spinning like a football. Gyro spin can be introduced in small amounts - this is measured by Trackman, Rapsodo, etc. You're not up to speed on this. I've had this discussion with Alan Nathan and Barton Smith - both physicists who specialize in baseball. You add slight gyro spin to a cut fastball.
@jeremykates72767 күн бұрын
@@DanBlewett I think it’s impossible to have a ball without any gyro spin at all, but I don’t think a cutter inherently introduces gyro spin. You can still throw a cutter with back spin and side spin without its spin vector pointing in the direction of motion. Obviously I’m not as qualified as these physicists so I’ve gotta go back and look into it a bit more
@DanBlewett7 күн бұрын
study up on it - as i mentioned, you're wrong on this.
@jeremykates72767 күн бұрын
@@DanBlewett I’ve been looking into this a bit and from my understanding, cutters generally have a high amount of gyro spin, but it doesn’t mean that a cutter has to have gyro spin any different than a 4 seamer or 12-6 curveball. You can still have a perfect cutter with a spin axis entirely in the x-y plane. The way I think about it is a perfect slider with strictly side spin would have a spin axis that is completely vertical and would be parallel to the x-y plane. If we now rotate that slider 45 degrees clockwise in the x-y plane, we can get a cutter with equal parts backspin and sidespin without inducing any gyro spin. This spin axis would point from 45 degrees to 225 degrees in the x-y plane, but would still be 0 degrees in the other 2 planes (x-z and y-z) which means it wouldn’t have any gyro spin. Like I said it’s extremely difficult to throw a cutter like this because of the grip and release, but it doesn’t mean a cutter has to have gyro spin in theory like any other pitch. Maybe I’m not thinking about this correctly but I’d like to hear a counterpoint from you cause maybe that’ll help me think about it in a different perspective
@ivanriverajr50126 күн бұрын
@jeremykates7276 I think you're over exerting yourself on this topic. Just get a glove and ball, practice if that's your intentions. Bringing physics and the magnus effect to the equation is unnecessary. 😂 either you learn by playing or just take your argument elsewhere.

Where does the thumb go? Center of ball or one side or the other?
@misterholttvАй бұрын
Leave the thumb where it’s at. If you move the thumb the weight of the ball is one sided. Think of it like a 4 seamer, the thumb and both fingers cut the ball in half, the middle finger adds spin stabilizing the ball. The cutter cuts the ball in half with the thumb and index only making the middle finger add gyro spin.
@jamesanderson2438 Жыл бұрын
Is there more pressure on the index finger? Do you find a cutter is complimentary pitch for the two seam, assuming they both start in same location and run different direction? Or do you use one for right handlers and one for left handlers to run away from hitter?
@DanBlewett Жыл бұрын
no - finger pressure doesn't really exist. It's a myth that you can apply differential pressure as your arm is moving at insane speeds. Cutter is a purpose pitch to jam opposite-handed hitters or get ground balls for same side. Not appropriate for youth players at all. too hard to throw correctly and not necessary.
@Mikejones011990 Жыл бұрын
@@DanBlewett that opinion surprises me. You're telling me I can't consistently squeeze more with one finger than another? Or that it doesn't really have an effect? I'd never considered that possibly, but it seems pretty straightforward for those fancy baseball pitch physicists to test and measure. (Those guys have an awesome job. Look em up if you haven't seen em on KZbin. They have fancy machines and they design pitches. Don't ask em how to actually make it spin the way they demonstrate, they'll just remind you that you're the pitcher lol.) As for the usefulness of a cutter... I've only been able to make the ball break glove-side twice in 33 years, and those two were probably just dreams brought on by intense visualization techniques. But it seems like with every pitch going straight, straight down, or left, having something that moves glove side should be a powerful tool. Cutter, 2sm, and a change-up seems like a pretty solid arsenal.
