I am Icelandic. I speak Icelandic, A.K.A. Old Norse. It's stayed mostly the same isolated on an island since Icelands settlement in 875(+-15 years). I don't know if they gave us the word or we them. But the word "Verangur" we still have. "Að vera í verangri." Means to be on a journey with a purpose(like a quest) The word Veröld means world and has the same base. Also "Að vera í Víking": To be in Viking. Means to be viking-ing, a verb. Both verangur and víking can be verbs. Like Jumping/Jumper. Verangur Verang Verangi Verangs

This show was personally interesting to me for a very particular reason. My earliest recorded ancestor was one of those Norman proto-knights under William the Conqueror. At Hastings, he apparently was responsible for removing William’s damaged face guard, which was hampering his ability to breathe. For this deed, he was given the name Ayre (air) and made a minor noble of some sort.

The thing about replacing Napoleon with Alexander the greats army made me think of the Swedish 17th century tactic called "gå på" (go on). They used that lull in the fire to close on the enemy and turn to a fierce melee combat. That led to the swedes beating much bigger forces with equal equipment.

This is literally the plot of a manga/anime called 'Drifters'. Famous historic war participants are snatched up at the moment of death on the battlefield and thrown in a new land to fight against each other via 2 factions. Oda Nobunaga, Hannibal, Scipio, Joan of Arc, Tamon Yamaguchi from wwII japanese navy (and he has his aircraft carrier the Hiryū), Gilles de Rais, Hitler was present but died (again) before the story really starts. Quite a few japanese warriors, obviously. I loved it.. But anyway...if anyone is into niche japanese comics/animation about warriors from different time periods commanding armies and going at it.. Well there you go, lol..

We played WW2 naval miniature battles & 1/284 micro armor in the 70s. I still have the rules for the armor - Tractics. Fantastic game. Most of our wargame time was with tabletop games from Avalon Hill and SPI, though. My 'friend' stole all my 1/284 miniatures, but I still have a few around. I wish I could remember the name of the naval rules. In the game, you have to guess the range, which made for a very fun experience. Disappointed with this show. If we're going to do counterfactuals, how about something useful? A counterfact of the invasion of Japan in '45 would go a long way toward getting some people to understand why the bomb was used.

55:45 "at Hastings, they had self bows, which were the least powerful. To the Romans, these would be non impressive". Not sure where that notion comes from. Draw weights of historical bows are notoriously difficult to estimate. The famously powerful English and Welsh longbows were self bows. Earlier bows from eras before the advent of plate armour would likely have been less powerful than those, and very powerful composite bows certainly existed. But I don't know of reliable sources for draw weights of Norman and Roman bows. If anyone does, I would be interested to know. For anyone interested in historical archery, I would recommend the book "War Bows" by Mike Loades.
