I used a trimmer for over 30 years for the beard and moustache. You're right about the moustache hairs being short and pokey. Scissors are definitely the way to go on the stache.

I've circumvented the mustache trim by not trimming at all. The exception is the few overachievers that start poking out at the ends. My terminal mustache length has happened and I just wax and style what I have. I've become accustomed to the length and it no longer bugs me. Once again, the exception is the new cycle growing hairs that enviably find their way up into my nostrils for a short period, until length takes over again.

@@DanCBearded Yes. The best advice I keep hearing is to just not touch it and just sweep it to the side. I myself do that. The only issue I have is, when you look at it from the side/profile view, you can see the ends of the stache visibly poke out. I've concluded that this seems to be the case because I keep my sides shorter. If my sides were bushier, it would blend in and not be a problem. LOL

I know you have addressed him before, & not to take away from your tutorial, but I've always done the Grey Bailey, A.K.A. George Bruno "smile" type mustache trim. Grin real big & trim along the line where the top lip meets the bottom lip. Quick, simple ready to go eat with the family. No facial hair included with your meal. That being said, I do miss the giant 'stache I once had. However, a man has to eat huh??

I use a nice little pair of Beard and Bates 1878 Black Label Shears to trim my stache around my upper lip only, but in a way that it still hangs over the lip. I leave the top and ends completely alone...but hey, that is my preference for my stache. Like you DanC, the Lazy Walrus is the look I go for. And it is still long enough for a handlebar if I so wish. As long as it is smooth I'm happy! 😎

I do this sometimes. My mustache isn’t particularly thick and it kind of helps keep my longer hairs from standing out, making my mustache look more uniform. Hopefully I’ll have a thicker mustache like yours one day so I don’t feel the need to do this. In addition to a trimmer with a guard, I always trim along my lip line regardless. The Philips Multigrooms come with a narrow trimmer attachment which I never ever thought I’d use but I actually use it all the time! It’s really great for trimming in tight areas like under your mustache and around your ears. I think the Philips Multigroom 7000 may very well be better than the Brio Beardscape. I use my scissors much less than I used to although they definitely still have their place and I’m looking at buying a nicer pair.

Dan, Spot on with that video! No trimmers for this guy!! I have struggled in the past with my mustache trying to get that full and sweeping look. I think a full sweeping mustache compliments a full beard dramatically in my opinion. I only trim the ends. I don’t trim the bottom at all. I just sweep it to the sides using your HTD (heat + tension = direction)method. It gives me the option to style it standing alone with a bit of a handle bar or blend the ends into the beard. Eating may be more of a challenge but it’s worth it! ( Eating 🍽 might be a good topic for a video)

@DanCBearded

@leosigman7239

It definitely does matter. I no longer remember the source, but trimming against the grain evens length and removes bulk, while with the grain does not. However, it is nearly impossible to trim a mustache with the grain because your nose gets in the way of properly angling the blades for the length of the guard.

Depends on what you are going for. I'm maintaining a medium-long stubble/short beard and use the 9mm guard clippers all over (including the mustache). End result looks very clean beard-wise for my particular profession
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 3 жыл бұрын
The look is always preference, of course. However I disagree because I believe you can achieve whatever length or look you want, in a better way than using guards. You can still get that clean look with scissors, and I would argue even cleaner. When you use a guard it cuts all of the hairs uniformly. I do not think that is a good look for a mustache. I strongly feel the outside layer of the mustache (starting from the top) should be the longest and smoothest. Then the hairs get shorter underneath as you approach the lip. This gives a cohesive look. You can make the mustache shorter or less full, but do that by taking off bulk from the bottom, not from the “face” or outer layer of the mustache. I think people know this when they see it, even if it is subconsciously or if they don’t want to admit it.
@RogersMJP
@RogersMJP 3 жыл бұрын
I'll give it a go next time and compare results for sure. Thank you for the explanation. Would you agree for a uniformly cut mustache for heavy stubble looks?
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 3 жыл бұрын
@@RogersMJP yes, absolutely! That’s a good call and exception to this. If you are going short and straight up stubble, keeping it the same would work. If you went longer with the mustache, you would have what we call a beardstache, which I Love!

This is where I'm at. Using scissors is so much harder. Not only that, but without an angular finish, I look like I have "lip bangs". I rocked a handlebar mustache back in 2010 and I hated getting draft beer, ice cream, bbq, etc. stuck in my whiskers. I agree with you 100%.

@@DanCBearded You can keep the lazy walrus in the front and there starts styling up the sides and let them grow longer I think yours are probably pretty long anyway? I'll tell you mine is very easy at this point even with wearing a mask. I just hit it with a blow dryer for like 10 15 seconds and it kind of jumps into place. And then little wax. Company reviewed really is a wax on using by choice beard care club I believe they are out of Utah. Super easy smooth consistency holds pretty well.

Yes! Great mustache video! Only scissors with very minimal trimming to the under stache to keep it out of my mouth so I cam eat cheeseburgers!! 😋 then sweep to the sides with a blow dryer and a comb, and keep the tips neat and uniformed 👊🤘

Guards work. The secret is to choose one length shorter but then only use downstrokes.
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 3 жыл бұрын
The look is always preference, of course. However I disagree because I believe you can achieve whatever length or look you want, in a better way than using guards.

@@DanCBearded As you said, it's a preference. There are many instances when a mustache is too short. It can be incongruent with the rest of the facial hair or have that spiky/prickly look. If and when it's done correctly however, a shorter mustache looks great and it's super functional. There is no orthodoxy to this except having proper technique. Otherwise, we'll have to agree to disagree.

Morning Dan. Okay, I'll try to explain best way I can lol. Trying to fully grow my beard out. It's going ok I think haha. Anyways the problem is with my mustache. The left side seems to be doing what I want which is to grow down and blend in, my right side on the other hand kinda comes down and curves towards my ear and also seems Fuller than my left. Sooo, sould I just let it to continue to grow out, try to trim or cut to make them both look even? Idk what to do lol. Wish there was a way to send a pic to better explain.
