Great video! Thanks! One other thing I was made aware of is that when inputing your own chords into the chord track, (once you have clicked on "create chord" the first time) instead of moving the playhead with the mouse, you can type a Dmadd9 for example and when you hit tab it will jump to the next bar and you can type in another chord.
@abulka6 ай бұрын
You can enter in chords from midi faster by letting the play head keep playing and simply hit TAB before each new chord is encountered, thus no fiddly stop start editing.

Definitely the best tutorials available. Most of the others you have to fast-forward all the talking, and all the self-promoting stuff - they just drone on and on and repeatedly ask you to subscribe. But none of that with this chap: straightforward, gets right into the subject and explains everything in great detail. Respect to you, sir.

Great to see you again! I haven’t updated to LP11 yet, but this will be a very useful technique. One thing I saw that might be useful to those who don’t know the key of the MIDI they’ve opened - in the Loops Library saver, enter the first chord as the Key. For example, in the Jazz chords here, it was B Minor (Bm9). The progression was i-i-iv-III. That way, it will have the best chance of conforming to the key you’re in when you load it into an existing project. And if the first chord is not the root chord, at least you’ll be closer than random.

This is great! I think the reason your Jazz Chords 2 did that thing you selected key of C when you made the session player loop (so when you dragged it back … it saw C and just left it). I have a feeling there is a shortcut to making your midi sequences into loops like that … time and someone (maybe you) will find it. This is a great tool, total game changer for Logic Pro.

One hint to speed up chord recording. Setup midi region and internal midi in as described. Move playhead to region start - Ctrl-U to create locators and cycle, spacebar 2x. Create new chord in chord global track, activate midi in and press play. Now, when chord was recognized press stop. Do not press Enter! Use TAB key instead. New chord will be created at next bar. Press play again. If midi chase is off, new chord will be recorded exactly at the beginning of next bar. In short: create first chord, activate midi - play, stop, tab - play, stop, tab … With control surface you can use jog wheel and with keyboard shortcut for Create Chord (new Key Command Assignment) you can create new chord at any moment! You can even play chords to replace midi track chords on the fly!

Chord progressions are a nice feature for amateur musicians that don’t really know what they’re doing, but it is also a great feature for professional musicians to work faster! Apparently, logic AI capabilities still need to be improved. On one hand it could produce correct voice leading which would sound nice and smooth and professional, and then on the other extreme you could reduce the correct voice leading to make it sound more amateurish which the kids will like.

Do you know if the chord feature in Logic Pro can analyze a complete MIDI piano song (or just the bass line midi or audio) and automatically create a chord progression based on the notes played? Or do I need to manually enter the chords for each section? Because I play complex chords but can't read so if it could notate and bring it in automatically, then build the auto accompaniment based on that? So for instance so could I use my piano midi part to have a session player bass line created or guitar part to add to the rest of the audio/midi drums, epaino, strings, vocals, etc of a completed song. Thx

It can't analyse a whole midi file, but if you can play/program a chord progression you can use this method to copy it into the chord track.

Can you do chord entry using RNA names - eg. select Key: Then I IV V ii V I etc., or do users have to know how to do RNA with named chords? Also, with RNA inversions, would put notes down into the bass. May not be a feature in Logic, but would be good to know. Users may still have to figure out their own RNA.

The Bmaj7(9) - Bmin7 - Emin7 - Dmaj7(9) is a non-diatonic progression. Bmin7(9) is B, D#, F#, A ,C (it would be diatonic if it had a b5 ie F not F# and was minor) - it is not a stable progression; the 9 just adds colour / tension

When manually creating a chord, the first one is good, then I move the play head one measure forward, when I create second chord it pops up a measure after the playhead. Snap is set to Beat. Very frustrating. Edit: This is apparently caused by having pre-measures in the Project (which I always have at least one). Removing pre-measures fixes it. I have reported it as a bug.

It seems kind of ridiculous that you would waste five minutes to play in four single chords from a midi file one at a time. Logic should make this so that I can input an entire four minute piece, and then logic could analyse the chords.

That would be simply importing a midi file of a 4 minute song. every daw can do that

Their "chord editing" interface is one of the worst in all similar programs (Cubase's chord track, Scaler, EzKeys, and others). Click, click, click, reopen windows all the time to write a chord progression. And the chord name you can't fucking click, you need to write it switching from the mouse to the keyboard. Argggg! Hopefully they improve it in the next version.
