Rex Viper is the equivalent of a teenager cover band in dad's garage. I've been around. I remember Nintendo band covers since the early 2010s. The neskimos were my first experience- mixed well, and the band was in the pocket. To this day, I get ads for concerts with the same concept- charging serious money, and sound tight. The only way I'd attend a Rex Viper show if it was a Two drink minimum at a dive bar I happen to walk into a bar at a random Tuesday in Philly.

The frog stomp, classic 😂. I’ve not been on a stage in 20 years, but I remember doing a battle of the bands thing in Manchester in the early 90’s and our singer decided on the spur to jump into the throng, landed badly on someone’s vomit, slipped and whacked his head off the deck, then tried unconvincingly to front it out as part of the act, like ‘fuck yeah, punk man’ 😂. Driving back up to Edinburgh with poor Neil asking to pull over every 15 mins so he could be sick again wasn’t fun. Honestly, the sheer calamity of being in a band, it’s tough man 😅. Btw having heard some of your bands music, I like some of it, you’ve some good songs and you’re obviously a talented guy, I guess this your side gig, the way things are now with music, and getting paid, that’s smart. My band, different incarnations of it, ran from 1984 to 1997, by which time I was 32 and admitted defeat. We were definitely in a vain with your tastes, trying to do fuse our love of then contemporary electronic stuff coming out of Europe, with heavy metal I guess, sort of what queensryche ended up being I guess, the only difference being we never wrote an operation mindcrime. 😂 I’ll be 59 in November and have just started rehearsing with some guys locally just for fun, covers, after all these years I just missed playing, and now there really is nothing else to it, the ambition of youth is long gone. Rehearsing an industrial rock version of Floyd’s welcome to the machine currently, have to say it’s sounding epic. We won’t get booked at weddings but hey call it an expensive hobby.

Was in a band myself 10 years ago, Theres footage of our first show on my channel hidden amongst the playlists if you wanna see for proof… WE WERE BETTER. we practiced for about 4 months for 4 hours each weekend before playing that show…. I have that footage, because we watched it over and critiqued our own performances. We were a bit stiff, and had out flaws, But the music was tight, we played everything faster than the way we practiced it all, And we didn’t really fumble any notes at all. Each member dialled in to what we each did best and we held that focus for the entire time we were on stage. Yeah, we were amateur. We landed a 4:30 time-slot in a battle of the bands event we never expected to even make the 2nd round of, Which we didn’t… But, we learned a ton. Not every show goes perfectly. The band that played before us, a group of guys around the same age, completely bombed during their set because the majority of their gear stopped working half way through the first song, So the singer did an acoustic set while the rest of the band just sat around on stage…. They had no plan at all. Before we took the stage, we went over our gear and rehearsed as fast as we could IN THE WASHROOM OF THE VENUE. And we blew it out of the park, as well as you can for a band playing to a mostly empty room of parents of the guys in the other bands, And trying not to melt under the pressure of being recorded on camera for an entire 20-something minutes in 1 take. Its intense. Alot can go wrong if you don’t prepare properly, And even if you prepare, You might have a Frog Stompin’ moment caught on camera…. Lol when we’d rehearse at home, we were wild, But when we got on stage, we tried to be professional. No stupid moves, no jumping around, No spinning, no synchronized swaying like an 80’s hair band…. Just no. Sit still, focus on your instrument, and try to get the best performance you can out of the instrument, yourself, and the gig you’ve been given the privilege of displaying your talents at. The false image stuff like wearing spandex or spiking your hair when you don’t typically do that…. Thats stuff is gonna make you look whack real quick. Same with corny moves. You think you’re emulating a badass when you do it, but you’re just summoning your tism in front of the public lol. You gotta play it cool, sit still, And maybe just aim for a bit of crowd participation. Play good music if you wanna please the crowd, Don’t jump like a 6 year old boy excited to watch paw patrol lol We only played a few gigs, but we had good ones and bad ones…. But our first gig was better than any of the many shows rex viper has played. Despite not playing in a band anymore, and despite james and his band probably playing waaaay more than we ever did, You’d think they’d know more than we did being a couple of 19 year olds back then…. And don’t tell me he “doesn’t have time” to practice lol

I personally really don’t care if I see a band set up/pack up their own gear, but I guess I’m from a different world being from the DIY punk scene where it’s a necessity! In regard to Rex Viper; they seem to be in a rather unenviable position. They’re total beginners but due to James’s previous internet fame, their sucky nascent stage has been highlighted for all to see. As you know already; you only get better by rehearsing and gigging frequently which they don’t seem to be doing at the moment, but who knows, maybe in a couple of years and with a bit of experience under their belt, they may become a half decent band?* *Emphasis on “half”
