Some say it's difficult to work with family. Dane Cook tells Tom Segura and Christina P about the scandal with his brother and how he stole millions of dollars from him. He talks about the hardships involved with being betrayed by family and eventually testifying in court against them.

It would be nice to be so rich to not notice someone stealing millions from you. But other times I'm glad I'm not rich because I'd probably be like most rich people and be an ass.
@s92dx
@s92dx 2 жыл бұрын
It's not just about richness. I grew up poor, I'm currently doing okay but not well off by any means. Financial anxiety generally has me push any thought of finances, bills, etc completely out of my head. I used to never check my bank account, talking 1-2 years without checking. And I often had a sinking feeling that I had no money in the bank, but when I inevitably checked it had only grown of course. Because I grew up poor I just live extremely frugally. Had $300 rent and almost no other bills, so my weekly $500 paycheck meant I didn't really have to look at my accounts. It's taken years to break these habits and I still struggle to check into my finances

Man do I feel this. It's crazy how family can betray you. My mother cheated on my father and left him for another man but they never divorced, 2 years later he passed in a car accident. He had taken her off his life insurance policy and added me, left everything else to me including his house and she tried to take me to court over it! She demanded I let her and her boyfriend live in his house rent free even though my Grandmother was living there as my dad had moved her in and she wanted me to kick her out! She also wanted half of his life insurance. If only you knew all the terrible things she said and tried to do. She even tried to go to the bank the day AFTER he died and tried to get back into his account! Thankfully he had taken her off all the accounts but she tried to say because they were still technically married (which they were although legally separated) that I needed to give her everything. Even his personal things. I don't speak to her anymore.

Y'all's family situations suck, I'm sorry. Never tell others, especially whom you don't know, that they shouldn't do something based on your narrow experience. People often forget how separated their life experience is from another to the next. There are good families who love and trust one another, and there are broken families. Coming from two families that split, my mother's family is a dysfunctional cesspool of negativity and malice, whilst my dad's family is loving, trusting, and hold no judgement towards one another. I trust those people with my life and belongings, as for my mother's side, I can't say the same. Just because your circumstance led you to that conclusion, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Humans are tribal by nature, and family is, probably, the most accessible tribe to be a part of. Don't forget the capacity for humanity; especially the millions of facets of it that you have not, and most likely, will not experience. The internet can and will only do so much for it's user in our search for understanding and I truly believe we, as a general populous, often fail to consider that. Just a thought. It's hard to make such a claim. I wonder how bad the Jews or China would treat your money? Maybe even your local church?

She didn’t have a car at the time so I left with my wife and let her borrow my car for a week or so to figure it out. She crashed it by nodding off 2 days later in plain daylight. Honestly I think that he and she applied the context to themselves without speaking, ironically showing they aren’t precisely sociopaths. Even if they have chameleon tendencies. I think they experienced some stuff that made them a little more capable of finding that place. Where their emotions for whatever reason aren’t lining up correctly. Happens with trauma, where it makes it difficult to feel the emotions of a stressful situation directly. Or feeling the wrong emotion. Disassociation. Or depersonalization. And in those states you don’t or can’t process emotions correctly. Add in some bad habits, like lying or some other coping mechanism in youth. Yeah the joke that Tom is a sociopath isn’t without merit. But he wouldn’t see how that story related to him if he was.

@Not Robot So you think it's poetic justice for borrowing one or two jokes? I don't like Dane Cooks comedy much but 99% of the material he does is his. I actually watched the Louis episode where he and Dane discuss Dane borrowing his joke without realising he'd taken it. I mean think about it dude why would Dane steal a joke from his friend and put it on an album? Makes no sense that he would do that intentionally unless there was beef and Louis was rumoured to be harsh on male comedians who were good looking so maybe Dane took it after Louis roasted him a little too hard? I'd buy that more than Dane Cooks is an evil talentless hack who deserves to have his money stolen by his own brother. BTW joke theft has been happening since the dawn of stand-up and will only get worse now as everyone thinks they're a comedian on social media so it's easier than ever. I bet even your favorite comedian stole a joke and you don't even realise it

You have to admire how Cook handled such a devastating loss and how he describes it. I have a lot more respect for him as a man if not so much as a comedian. Even if it’s not my taste, it’s amazing to me how people can get up on a stage alone and create an experience for huge crowds. Cook came up with his own thing that killed. This interview shows that he’s also a man of character. At no point did he wallow in victimhood. He just got more motivated and focused.

The implications made here (and all over these comments) that family members are more likely to "fuck you over" and even worse than friends or strangers is just ridiculous. Does it happen? Of course. But, these implications flying around are just silly. My family is pretty toxic, but no one's ever stolen from me, or anything close to that, etc. Friends sure have. I understand that's just colloquial evidence, but no friends I've ever had walked around talking about how exploited they were by their family. You people seem like you're not really thinking very much about what you're saying...and though it sounds like It, I'm not trying to be disrespectful.

That was hilarious!! It’s a flippin joke!! It wasn’t cold. It was funny. You have to be able to laugh at mistakes from the past, especially when you’re a comedian! Dane shouldn’t have trusted his ex-convict bro to manage his $ & never make sure everything was all good.

At that level, you literally don't have the time. It's not your personal account you spend with your ATM card. It's a commercial/business account. You don't check that bank account because you have an accountant to do that. Just like you trust your lawyer, and don't check court or legal papers (or the law books themselves).
@aphysique

@Starscream91 I don't think you understand the structure of being a celebrity. You have a lawyer. You have an accountant. You have an agent. You have a manager. You have a secretary/handler. You have stage crews and manager. You have a sound technician. There are multiple corporate bank accounts, and you never look in any of them. Ever. They are handled by the staff you hired. People forget *this is not Dane Cook's personal bank account being spoken about here* These would be business account(s) managed by his team(s). He wouldn't be looking in these account(s) any more than you would if you were a member of Motley Crue, for example. You'd expect your BROTHER to be doing a great job, as your accountant. It's what you pay him for, after all. The only account you'd see regularly is your personal account (the one you spend from) when you get paid. The balance you see every day, when you buy food, a television, a car, etc. That's NOT the account we're talking about here. As explained in the video, he had to physically sit down at the bank, and gain access with the help of bank staff, to get in there and see what was going on in the business account(s). Cook was not the primary comptroller. As he shouldn't be.

@@abandoned-mines-novascotia I hear what you're saying, but this isn't really correct. Myself, and millions of others, are business owners. We know exactly what we have in our business and personal accounts. I feel very bad for Dane, but he gave his brother just way too much power and did not put any stop gaps, or oversight, in place. Dan was certainly entitled to view his annual statments and tax statements with his accountant, lawyer, bank, etc, and unfortunately he didn't and trusted his brother. By the way - I'm not blaming Dane for doing that, it's hard to imagine a family member doing this to another family member.

@djohnson6528 My feeling exactly! Foolishness to trust others with your money (even/especially family).... people like Dane are always busy running their life on the road. Unfortunately not taking the time to check up on his finances cost him big.... but consider that a lot of very savvy people that were "on top" of their money fell victim to Bernie Madoff.... so Dane isn't unique in being a victim.
