What a totally lovely performance by the entire quartet - each member playing (in that special Mozartian sense of the word) with such sweet, gentle finesse. A joy - as surely it was meant to be!

Interesting that, as in most piano competitions these days, all pieces have to be memorised, but the Rubinstein makes an exception for the Chamber music part of the competition - hence her use of a score is allowed. Not sure what the reasoning behind that is?

Always is allowed to read while doing Chamber music. And in Chamber music recitals outside competitions people read too.

Well you're just stating the obvious - we know it's allowed - but why? Why in the chamber music part but not the solo? And in non-competition chamber music recitals and in solo recitals sometimes people read, sometimes they don't - that's presumably because they either trust their memory or not.

@@lsbrother Hi! It's a great question. I play in chamber ensembles myself as a pianist-we virtually always read from the full score for chamber music because it helps greatly to know how everyone's parts interact with each other. More often than not, everyone is reading from full scores these days so that we all know how to integrate with each other. Hope that answers your question!

@@jsbach777 , you mean your players (other than the pianist) read full scores? I've never seen that myself and I suspect non-pianists would have difficulty reading multiple lines of music. But it is true that seeing the whole score greatly aids one understanding of the music. In pratice, I often stop to share my piano part with the others, to illustrate some point or other.
