I loved this stream of conciousness from the first time I heard it decades ago. I never sang in public since my voice broke at age 11, (and I was told not to sing anymore), but I am going to perform this song at my age of 75, as a duet with my Jazz Musician daughter at a small Jazz Jam next Friday. Jobim recorded it as an alternating duet in Portugeuse, with Elis Regina in 1972. We will sing it to, (Jobim's version of), the English lyrics.

Waters of March was one of the most successful songs composed at a latter point in Jobim’s career. At that time, unlike in his early days, he was starting to write himself the English versions for his new songs. This one is an example of that, where he even tried to avoid words with roots on Latin; for this reason, this version has more verses than the original. He kept the same structure and central metaphor of the original lyrics meaning. However, some specific references to Brazilian culture, fauna, flora and folklore were suppressed. Besides, the English version assumes a viewpoint from a observer in the Northern hemisphere. In this context, the “waters” are from the snowbreak, rather than from the end-of-summer rains in the tropical climate of the Southern hemisphere. Instead of only “promise of life”, there was the addition of “promise of spring”, a concept much more relevant to most of northern world.

spot on. it's more than a song. it is poetry, literature...it is Great Art. It is most, if not all, of Life Itself that matters: the absent-minded moments when you feel part of a greater universe in space and time, when you forget yourself and touch timelessness, then some mundane little thing -- a cut in your toe -- brings you "back to earth." It's all here, elegant and songful and magnificent. Thank you Mr. Jobim!

What a beautiful soul. See the Wikipedia article. How sad what he suffered from his father abandoning him and his mother when he was a young child. By the time he was in his 50's, one can see how disease in his body took on the wounding of his soul, yet how true what he said about so many great artists, composers having been wounded people. Most of the European classical music composers had some form of critical disease. Why is that? Wouldn't it be beautiful if, in the 21st c, men would come to see how important is their role as a father and stepfather, seeing what the loss of them does to a family. The wound is carried for life. I am grateful to have discovered this precious song this evening, hearing it while driving, listening to public radio in the NYC area. God rest his soul. May the beauty of his music help to transform the world away from hate and toward peace, love for the beauty of nature, God's Creation.

'A stick, a stone, It's the end of the road, It's the rest of a stump, It's a little alone It's a sliver of glass, It is life, it's the sun, It is night, it is death, It's a trap, it's a gun The oak when it blooms, A fox in the brush, A knot in the wood, The song of a thrush The wood of the wind, A cliff, a fall, A scratch, a lump, It is nothing at all It's the wind blowing free, It's the end of the slope, It's a beam, it's a void, It's a hunch, it's a hope And the river bank talks of the waters of March, It's the end of the strain, The joy in your heart The foot, the ground, The flesh and the bone, The beat of the road, A slingshot's stone A fish, a flash, A silvery glow, A fight, a bet, The range of a bow The bed of the well, The end of the line, The dismay in the face, It's a loss, it's a find A spear, a spike, A point, a nail, A drip, a drop, The end of the tale A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light, The shot of a gun in the dead of the night A mile, a must, A thrust, a bump, It's a girl, it's a rhyme, It's a cold, it's the mumps The plan of the house, The body in bed, And the car that got stuck, It's the mud, it's the mud Afloat, adrift, A flight, a wing, A hawk, a quail, The promise of spring And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the promise of life It's the joy in your heart A stick, a stone, It's the end of the road It's the rest of a stump, It's a little alone A snake, a stick, It is John, it is Joe, It's a thorn in your hand and a cut in your toe A point, a grain, A bee, a bite, A blink, a buzzard, A sudden stroke of night A pin, a needle, A sting, a pain, A snail, a riddle, A wasp, a stain A pass in the mountains, A horse and a mule, In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the promise of life in your heart, in your heart A stick, a stone, The end of the road, The rest of a stump, A lonesome road A sliver of glass, A life, the sun, A knife, a death, The end of the run And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the end of all strain, It's the joy in your heart.'

Thank You Dany Lynen, Mistro Jobim holds a special place in my heart; even though my familiarity with him is only his music and one brief interview on the Today Show one morning years ago. I seldom watched the show; but one untypical morning tuned in to hear "we'll have an interview with Anton...Jobim after these words from our sponsors". Naturally...He was a gracious gentleman happy to tell the "origins" of "The girl from Ipanema" from he and his cafe mates seeing a girl walking past on her way to school every morning...and this "piece" fulfills the impression...that's all...good luck!
