The Frankenstein legend takes an uproarious twist in this outrageous special effects-laden comedy from the writer-director of Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. Critically acclaimed filmmaker John Hughes is at it again, giving nerdy computer whiz Ilan Mitchell-Smith and his best friend, Anthony Michael Hall, power to create the "perfect woman" (Kelly LeBrock). Like a computer-generated fairy godmother, the duo's out-of-this-world creation guides the pair through the pleasures and pitfalls of adolescence. With a rock beat supplied by many music superstars including Oingo Boingo, this far-out, sci-fi fable brings everyone's favorite teen fantasies to life through the miracle of Weird Science.
Actors: Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Kelly LeBrock, Robert Downey Jr., Bill Paxton
Director John Hughes
Genres: Action & adventure, Comedy, Family

It played into the fantasy most boys had (at least when I was growing up) to not only have an older woman, but a woman who you could have as your willing sex partner, because girls were too out of their reach at the moment, and boys were just naturally horny. Dunno why this fantasy fell out of favor.

Oh, for anyone to actually believe that 15 year old girls aren’t having their own such fantasies about more mature interests, they’d have to be very naive, or delusional. In that midway point between childhood and adulthood, well, hormones gonna hormone.

Yes - John Hughes does all of his movies in Chicago. I never really thought about it but you're absolutely right about reversing the roles. It really does say something about the double standard. Could it be made today? Yeah. Would it go over well? Probably not. But like so many other fantastically funny movies like this made in the 80's that perhaps didn't age well, it is a product of its time. Context is everything. As long as you can keep that in mind - you can still enjoy raunchy 80's comedies like Revenge of the Nerds and Porky's. Both great movies but definitely have some scenes that would be unacceptable today.

Robert Downey's friend is in a crazy vampire movie called "Vamp". Kelly LeBrock (Lisa) was married for a short time to Stevan Seagal and was in a movie with him called "Hard To Kill". He's pretty much a weirdo these days and makes straight to video type movies and likes to hang in Russia with Putin but made a couple of cool movies you might enjoy. "Above The Law", "Under Siege" and "Executive Desicision" with Kurt Russell. The crazy bald guy has been in several horror movies, most notable "The Hill Have eyes".

In a 1999 Premiere article, Hughes himself declared that Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles are all a part of the same universe, revolving around the fictitious suburb of Shermer (a fictionalization of Hughes' real-life hometown of Northbrook, Illinois, which was originally called Shermerville). Sadly, the crossover possibilities were never explored in film. John Hughes: When I started making movies, I thought I would just invent a town where everything happened. Everybody, in all of my movies, is from Shermer, Illinois. Del Griffith from Planes, Trains & Automobiles lives two doors down from John Bender. Ferris Bueller knew Samantha Baker from Sixteen Candles. For 15 years I've written my Shermer stories in prose, collecting its history. * It's long been speculated that Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Home Alone also take place in the Shermerverse, since those movies were written (but not directed) by Hughes and feature similar themes. Adding on to that, there is mixed evidence that Uncle Buck and Curly Sue (both directed by Hughes) might take place in the Shermerverse, but this hasn't been confirmed. * Weird Science explicitly takes place in Shermer (Lisa is seen teaching the Shermer High gym class at the end), though it has its own Speculative Fiction internal logic that is inconsistent with the other canon Shermerverse movies. * She's Having A Baby does NOT take place in the Shermerverse, since Neal Page's wife is seen watching that movie on television in Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

The double standard isn't quite set in stone though as there are a fair few number of movies that dealt with the opposite age difference pairings. One of which you watched on the channel being Almost Famous where Kate Hudson's character was in her middle teens while being the groupie for the lead singer of the group in that who was in his early/mid 20s.

I think when it comes to Lisa kissing one of the boys, context is everything. It’s a teenage boy fantasy. Obviously at face value, the optics aren’t great, but they created her to make themselves cool and have a hot woman to fool around with. Nobody is being exploited. It’s a fantasy and as it’s a movie for teenage boys who probably wished they had a Lisa, I’d say it’s fine. I’ve seen worse. Like Nickelodeon.

In context it's even stranger because Lisa has the form and mind of an adult, but has only existed for a day 😅

@@LordVolkovmakes me think of the video essay on YT from Pop Culture Detective called Born Sexy Yesterday. It's pretty interesting.

Context means nothing now. Everyone has to impose real world connotations on fantasy.
