The way Doja Cat is trying to use the satanic panic for her persona is basically the exact opposite of how Lil Nas X used the satanic panic in his music. When he utilized it for Montero, it was meant as him reclaiming demonic imagery after having it be used against him for his sexuality all his life. He took all the claims about how being gay was against God and took it to its most logical extreme. Doja Cat isn't really saying anything with the imagery, and whatever point she might've been making (fame is like selling your soul to the Devil yadda yadda) has already been said and done in more creative ways.

I'm GENUINELY curious about other people's opinion on this matter because I can't settle on where I stand on it. One one hand, that guy definitely did abuse his influence, but on the other, as D'Angelo said, he hasn't since (as far as we know). We obviously don't owe him anything, but if he did "grow" from it or whatever, and Doja Cat can see that, what is she supposed to do? It's really easy to say "I would break things off immediately" but I'm just not sure everyone calling her out would actually do that IRL. They know each other on a much more personal level, so while we can publicly refuse an apology or refuse to give him any kind of platform, I don't think anyone (aside from the people involved) can make a FULL judgement on it. I don't know what I would do if a person I really seemed to like was being called out for past behavior that has maybe been worked on since then. I feel like if she wrote a long explanation saying how he's changed or something would just yield the same response and wouldn't really convince any of us that he's a better person now. Blocking is pretty aggressive though.

i definitely wish we had more information on the whole situation, we’re definitely missing pieces of the picture here. however, his actions were bad enough that he did come out & issue an apology. if he is remorseful & has changed his behavior, i don’t think his past should be held against him forever (as long as he didn’t assault anyone, but i don’t think anyone accused him of that). that being said, if a victim comes forward to you for any reason, you should at least hear them out. doja could’ve offered a simple “that’s not who he is anymore” or “i don’t condone grooming” vs literally BLOCKING them & going on to call others miserable hoes. you can let your fans know you’re disappointed with their behavior or that they’ve overstepped your personal boundaries without being hateful J cyrus also could have stepped in at any time to come to his own defense side note: TWENTY or more women came forward, that’s a lot of people! i can’t be for sure, but it’s likely that there’s more victims who didn’t come forward. this is someone who has affected a lot of people. his victims at least deserve to have their voices be heard idk, i’d definitely like to see if anyone comes forward with any screenshots or other evidence (not that they owe us that)

I was a member of JCyrus' twitch community at the time of the big collapse. I was not one of the women he solicited nudes from/lead on, nor was I in their close social circle on discord, but I can tell you a little about what it was like there. It was safe, like a warm blanket. Everyone knew everyone's names, not their screen names but their NAMES. You'd show up and say hi and everyone would greet you like Norm from Cheers, including Jeff himself if you frequented the stream enough. It was full of lovely, kind people, and Jeff took advantage of this. He branded himself as a safe person, because look how safe and inclusive the stream is, right? He always made a point to thank us for being so wonderful, sometimes cry (probably crocodile tears in hindsight), and always always ALWAYS thanked his mods... on stream. A close friend of mine learned from one of the mods that he would frequently have them on discord calls screaming at them... these sweet hardworking people volunteering their time to moderate his chat. ALL behind closed doors, of course, so we all thought he really loved and respected and treated them well. We thought he was a genuine, trustworthy person. And then the women started coming forward. And it felt like the world falling down around us, because during covid we would all come together and spend all day at the stream or in his discord. Many of the victims of his mistreatment have private twitters with the exact details of their situations which I will not air out as many of them wish to move on with their lives, but all share a common thread of being made to feel special, to feel CHOSEN, and then used for their bodies one way or another, then dropped like a bad habit as soon as he was done. I've seen these women - they are all incredibly conventionally attractive. He is or at the very least was a manipulative snake who will NEVER regain the trust of those who were there when this all went down.

He took advantage and would've kept on doing it with the excuse of his mental health in his back pocket. And with the way he came back, and the way he's letting Doja defend him knowing he was in the wrong, it just lets me know that he was never sorry in the first place. I actually don't think she has any interest in quitting. She has done none of the work or commitment to quitting - if she wanted to do so, she could and would. Of course she is super famous but if she just decided to be a recluse, invest her money and never make music again, another version of her will pop up in the next few years with a different twist on it. Doja is insanely talented but the world is huge and talent is (almost) endless. There's tons of poor kids around the world with more talent than her that we never get the privilege of hearing. The reality is that Doja doesn't want to stop being rich and influential (and I don't blame her). All of this is a farce. Otherwise, she wouldn't constantly be on live and doing crazy things to gain attention and profiting off the new Satanic Panic. She knows what she is doing and she doesn't want to stop being in the limelight, she is just insecure. Ofc none of us actually know her but based on what I've seen I think she's super friggin insecure & defensive and I think she doesn't view pop music as good and valid music (SO untrue) because she spends her time with edgelords who have probably convinced her that the fact that a bunch of GenZ girls and gays love her music means it's garbage. As far as her blocking people on twitter (I'm not sure if she blocked any of the actual victims, the girl D'Angello showed in the video didn't seem to claim to be a victim, she was just giving her account as a minor who was in the community), with how many people were going nuts and lying about the situation it would've been very hard for her to know who was telling the truth and who was just insane. I don't quite think it's fair to expect her to comb through the tweets of everyone she wants to block to make sure they're telling the truth when there were likely dozens of accounts she blocked. Obviously this was made before the neo-nazi shirt fiasco, and you couldn’t have known or reported on that at the time, but I think she was already on a trajectory towards that kind of unforgivable behavior even when you posted this. Like others have said in the comments, the chat room stuff is actually quite a bit more serious than you alluded to here, and pretty well documented. From what I read it wasn’t just conjecture from fans, she was actually saying and doing some pretty wild stuff, and that shouldn’t just be brushed aside if people are uncomfortable with it. Also, I don’t think that her blatant disregard of and cruelty towards her fans can just be written off as trolling. I don’t think it’s parasocial to want, if not love, than basic respect from an artist that you support, and I think that it is valid for fans to take offense to those statements. at first i respected doja more because she actually challenged the parasocial relationship between a pop star and her fans by saying she doesn't "love" her fans because she doesn't know them. But then it turned sour
@cm1706 Жыл бұрын
Right? Could have become a really interesting and insightful conversation about how tempting it is to fall into parasocial relationships with public figures, how misplaced those relationships are and how much pressure they put on that public figure to be 'perfect' in some way by putting them on a pedestal / suggesting that they're somehow no longer 'normal people' like the rest of us, which I can only imagine would really mess with your head. It could have become a nuanced discussion of what a celebrity owes the fans who gave them their success, what boundaries public figures can demand for themselves, etc - but instead, here we are. Pretty disappointing outcome from what could have been a really beneficial conversation that would no doubt have received widespread engagement and prompted lots of people to critically engage with how they participate in fan culture for potentially the first time...

That one was puzzling to me for so many reasons when the usual generic statement would have been sufficient. If MGK knew how to do it, how come she or none of the clowns in her camp had enough common sense to know better. Somehow, it seems like in her mind she feels like she's the one being victimized based on how she handled everything.
@_makocap_3562 Жыл бұрын
@@melaniemsp1228 She was supposed to perform in Paraguay but it got suspended because of a big storm. The storm was so big it destroyed people's houses, people lost their pets, got injured and as far I know people died too. The 3 days she stayed in Paraguay she never said hello or something to the people stayed to receive her (before the storm happened). Nobody complained about it, everyone agreed it wasn't a big deal if she didn't wanted to come out the hotel to say hi. The problem started because Doja complained saying "nobody was waiting for her", that they didn't welcomed her and I think even called them like 'fake fans' AFTER all the storm thing, after people lost family, their house, mascots, etc. One of her tweets also was worded inappropiately, looking like if she was mocking people for 'drowning'. At the end she just blamed Paraguayans and played victim, saying she would quit music because of them There was also videos of people who worked at the hotel she stayed and said she especified she didn't wanted them to look at her directly at the eyes. But this one could be fake tho
@justtester_9962 Жыл бұрын
@@_makocap_3562 I don't think she was in Paraguay for a full 3 days. Also, wasn't there some famous blogger in Paraguay that posted something fake and people thought it was Doja? And when she saw people attacking her she was confused and clapped back and made things worse. Then somebody started calling her racist but I think it was probably somebody in the US and not Paraguay. Either way, I don't know if it was ignorance or lack of experience on Doja's part and her people not saying something like Miley and MGK did.

Genuinely so tired of people pretending like saying something and then calling people stupid for believing you isn't manipulative. When you're contantly jerking your fans around and they never know when you are or aren't serious, you get that jail out of free card of "it was just a joke"/"you're too dumb to get it". Pretending her behavior is any deeper than her being immature and insecure and thinking being a dick is funny does a disservice to artists. She doesn't have to say she loves her fans but she cannot just pretend they started it. Just kind of cringe, as someone who really enjoys the alt scene and use of religious imagery as metaphors. in some way, Doja's rise to fame reminds me of Lady Gaga's debut. they are both extremely talented and make earworms that are begging to top the music charts, but they also have a particular skill of memeing themselves into being the hottest topic of conversation. Gaga did it with her crazy outfits, and Doja does it with behavior on social media. the main difference is, Gaga was always over-the-top theatrical so it was always pretty clear that she was putting on a performance, while Doja seems to be a genuine troll. she has perfected the art of stirring up drama and using it as free publicity. the downside is, she tends to get lost in the memehole and the lines get blurry. it's sometimes hard to tell how much of her trolling is performative and how much is a defense mechanism to protect herself from crazy online fans (and haters).

Glad you brought that up, because back in the day when music and movies became a big commercial business, record labels and movie studios realized very early on how important image and perception was to their bottom line. They used to do everything to control the narratives about their stars, and that's when PR (public relation) became a crucial thing for them. It feels now that with the advent of the internet, that model seems to have been totally neglected. Investment in artist development is nonexistent, and we see the consequences when everybody has their own platforms.
