Weird/fun fact: The college Logan Paul dropped out of was Ohio University. I was a sophomore there while he was a freshman and he lived 2 dorms over from me. I used to see him around campus filming Vines all the time. He was loud and stupid back then too but it was kind of fun to see random spots of my campus trending on Vine all the time. He dropped out after a year and f***ed off to California and we were pretty glad to be rid of him. He woke me up one day by filming a Vine outside my dorm on my day off, yelling his head off and I’ve never quite forgiven him for it.

D’angelo isn’t the new Shane Dawson. They don’t make the same kind of videos. Shane didn’t talk about problematic people, he didn’t do it to report on or spread awareness about a person. His “investigations” weren’t objective - they couldn’t be when he made things take a personal narrative format. Someone saying “I did this because of ______,” is something only that person can attest to, and their words can’t be full heartedly believed when they are in “fix reputation” mode. D’angelo covers people who did shitty things from an objective (or at least) reasonable view. He holds a person accountable, recites what transpired, and leaves a margin of room to debate why someone did what they did. D’angelo is a jury - he keeps things detached. Shane was a “friend” - willing to believe whatever someone says because he likes them.

Logan saying “I’m an influencer, what’s my real influence been” is the most nuanced thing I think I’ve heard any influencer say. Do I feel like he’s changed a lot? Yeah. Do I think he’s a 100% changed, empathetic, emotionally and intelligently awoken? Not really. Do I like him? No. But that one line is somehow ridiculously insightful. It’s this crazy clarity among Logan’s craziness and makes him feel actually human for the first time in the entirety of my awareness of the entity that is Logan Paul. I just need that out there in the universe.
@lavenderoh3 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. And also adding, this is a different case since he's an influencer, but people do grow up. A few years might not seem like long but if I think of the meaningful differences in my life between age 22 and 25, it's pretty extreme. I don't think he's magically different, that's why we see the slip ups and differences in actual behavior over time. He's matured, and seems to be continuing to mature.

STORYTIME: my family and I were in Japan the EXACT SAME TIME Logan and his posse traveled there and filmed the dead body video. My sister and I were standing in line at an owl cafe and met Logan, one of his friends, and his girlfriend at the time--I complimented them on their attire since they were wearing traditional Japanese clothing and the girlfriend was surprisingly sweet while Logan and his other friend kind of stood there just smiling but saying nothing. And I kid you not, there was a SWARM of people following them around--THAT is how many people natively living in Japan watched his videos and knew about him and he disrespected their country in a matter of minutes or seconds with that one shot. EDIT: It is true that some homogeneous Asian countries will view tourists (specifically white and other non-Asians) with utmost fascination. I say that many of them were fans because my dad asked a few people why everyone was following Logan Paul and his squad were, and they said "KZbin" -- henceforth, the influence. P.S. If y'all think I'm lying, just know that there is literally no reason for me to lie about this because even on a channel with millions of subscribers and talking about a guy who has been famous worldwide, I have nothing to gain. I had no idea who these folks were until the incident came out--my middle school sister was the ONLY family member who knew about them from online. It would make sense if I said we had a LONG conversation and spent the whole day together with the squad and got them to follow me on social media, OF COURSE that would sound more outrageous. But you know, everyone is a skeptic, so enjoy that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This video really just shows how D'angelo is one of the best and most objective commentary KZbinrs out there. Like, how easy would it have been to make a 50-minute video just dragging Logan Paul, one of the internets most hated content creators, through the mud? I mean, the views are basically guaranteed from putting his name in the title anyway. But no, cause that would only be one side of the story, and that's not what D'angelo does. His videos honestly present better journalism than any major newsmedia I know of.
@ericaloveskorea3 жыл бұрын
I agree, but I feel like overall. He still decided to ultimately frame him as not that much better when he said something to the effect of saying Logan Paul was a rich kid forced to learn empathy to stay rich with no consequences. That disappointed me that his overall conclusion was still pretty negative because people do change and grow, and forgiveness is a good thing. At the same time, D’Angelo is only 22, so he’ll learn that with time, hopefully. Also, many people continue being terrible and rich, and it seems like he’s genuinely took a turn, and I respect that.
@mariabrown14813 жыл бұрын
@@ericaloveskorea Well, saying that he was forced to learn empathy and stayed rich without any consequences is, in my opinion, an accurate assessment, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. In the end, it only means that Logan's career has stayed intact, while the content he' is creating is much more worth the while, and he seems to also enjoy it a lot more. Or in other words, both sides have come out on top.
@ericaloveskorea3 жыл бұрын
@@mariabrown1481 It seemed in making that comment (the way he did), he implied he only changed and became empathetic to stay rich. But I totally understand your point of view and agree!

@@ericaloveskorea I get your point and it's of cause impossible to tell the intention behind Logan's sudden change of character. Like you, I prefer to see the best in people, and would much rather entertain this redemption arc narrative, but this is an ongoing subject and only time will tell. That being said, I do believe, that this comment specifically, considering the way it was used, might have been meant as a form of comedic relief, rather than actual criticism. But then again, I completely get where you're coming from.

Still don’t like him, don’t watch him and never will. The pain of losing a son/brother/husband or any loved one to suicide is a silent suffering in Japan, but as someone who lived there for 12 years, I can assure you that the grief is real and tragic. Japanese culture emphasizes taking responsibility and self-discipline, and this is why many people choose to end their lives in remote, quiet places. They feel like it’s better to not disturb or bother others with their own problems. His filming of this human being who was clearly tormented and in pain should never have seen the light of day.

When the Japanese video came out, I was on school break and I was at a daycare/child care center. The teacher came un and told all of the kids that they are banned from watching KZbin till the end of break. Me, a youngen unaware of the fucked up shit he did, was very confused. I ended up going into the bathroom and saw on the trending page a bunch of people reviewing the video. Let's just say my little baby brain was not prepared for what happened on that video.

The problem is that vine stars like lele pons or the paul brothers haven't changed their content when they switched to an entirely diffrent platform like youtube.Take Drew, Danny or Kurtis for example.They modified their content to fit youtube better but they still have the same charisma and personality that they did on vine and they aren't doing anything solely for views or clout which is why they're so much more enjoyable to watch.

That is the main problem with vlogging and keeping yourself in the public 24/7 by choice. One wrong move, and you'll have to spend years trying to remedy whatever you did wrong. The thing is, why you did it, and whether or not you had malicious intend does not matter, people hold public figures to inhuman standards, and if you out of immaturity and sheer stupidity film a dead body, you will be judged for it - fast forward to a few years and you mellow out a bit, you're still carrying that video with you wherever you go. You honestly see this surprisingly often with people that livestream or vlog, they do something really fucking stupid as people tend to do at times, and then their career is fucked. Not saying it's forgivable, as someone who struggled a lot with suicidal tendencies in my youth I'll never forgive him for what he did, but fuck me if it wouldn't be shit to have to constantly live with the fact that your shit choices as an immature man-child will haunt you for the rest of your life!
@weswalsh68613 жыл бұрын
Genuinely curious to know: how do you guys determine someone has redeemed themself? I want to be a person who can be glad to see him changing but having lost someone to suicide I really struggle to empathize with someone who would exploit a victim’s suffering for views. Are some things unforgivable? What can be done to make up for one’s behavior?
@apersonwhocan82913 жыл бұрын
You personally don't always have to accept peoples actions. You can say they grew from their actions but you are still hurt by than, therefore the apology isn't accepted but you still respect him as a human. personally they would need to grow and respect and help out the community they hurt from it.

You don't ever have to forgive him. If you see growth in someone that has done something you can't forgive then it's fine to just say, "good, keep doing that," and move on. We should all want better for one another, sometimes better is just baseline decency.
