Well, to be honest that’s the way it’s supposed to be. I’m not a fan of cancelling people completely for stupidity, nobody is born perfect and we all act stupid sometimes, but calling people out on their mistakes while also recognizing they still have good qualities is both an act of justice and empathy because you’re pointing out their mistakes while also giving them the chance to rethink what they said and redeem themselves. I hope Lana gets the message instead of acting all defensive.

Maybe being intentionally obtuse/goal post shifting by bringing your "words say no but voice says yes" concept is actually just having a screwy sense of flirtation yourselves? It's necessary or important to you do play these games, such that you'd defend it online? hmm

@wings of a butterfly No means no. If you had no interest with someone but they kept pushing themselves onto you, thats harrassment. It's people like you who pressure people into having sex/relationships with you with your constant begging, bitching and moaning.
@jspaingreene63504 жыл бұрын
@wings of a butterfly LDR can hardly be considered "original" for discussing the 'no means yes' trope. The writer Colette immediately comes to mind. Her short stories look at different sides of that trope: its destructiveness, its nuance, possibly pleasures, and the consequences. That this young man can intelligently discuss different templates placed onto members of society and reflect back the idea that most often the man is placing his designs on the woman is at least worthy of discussion. Certainly the idea that LDR might be a bird in a cage she doesn't know exists would be next level as well. Or she might simply be flirtatious as you say...or even the mistress devising all this, a puppet master. That's still not terribly original, but perhaps interesting. Madonna thought it was fun 20+ years ago. However, to dismiss the reality that so many women deal with unwanted attention under the guise of "no means yes" as the crabbing of sjw's is far too pat. You seem far too intelligent to miss that.

Yeah, the moment she said there should be a place in feminism for women who "say no but mean yes" I was like "oh, so you mean feminism should accommodate women too insecure in their sexuality, agency and desires to state what they want by reinforcing the dangerous and harmful belief that even when women explicitly state someone's sexual advances aren't welcome they secretly are, so no harm done?" She's got some audacity dubbing herself a "strong woman" and that "she paved the way" when she can't even admit what she wants to her partner lol. Saying that feminism should support this line of thinking really just outs her as someone whose comments on feminism and women's issues shouldn't be taken seriously as she's clearly talking from a place of ignorance. How out-of-touch does she have to be to not realize that the kind of "woman" she's describing is opposed to feminism's ideas of valuing women's words and reclaiming female sexuality? Her brand of "womanhood"- and by that I mean solely her "say no but mean yes" part of it, not traditional femininity nor submissive role- never was and never will be morally okay. Her thinking that "a new/3rd wave of feminism will come" (ayyyy lmao, I'm second-hand embarrassed on her behalf at this point) in which this is acceptable, is just another indication of her talking out of her ass while trying to look informed. This was likely just a publicity stand so I don't wanna waste too much time talking about it. I just think it's genuinely hilarious that she gets butthurt over people telling her that she's regressive then wonders what's wrong with feminism for not endorsing her "I say no but I mean yes" bs that is frequently used as an excuse for sexual assault and rape. It's a statement that's lacking self-awareness so much that it's brilliant. Oh and D'Angelo's a doll for voicing that, and voicing it so briefly yet accurately.

also as someone whos been studying feminist movements for years i hate how shes acting like no feminist has ever advocated for more traditionally feminine women to be treated with respect and dignity when feminists HAVE advocated for these women. she doesnt understand that feminism isnt about rejecting traditional femininity, but about rejecting the idea that femininity is inferior to masculinity and giving agency for women (and everyone) to choose how they want to perform their gender identity without being ostracized. she doesnt understand feminism at all which is even more infuriating.
@bluewescott46313 жыл бұрын
i don’t think she’s talking about what feminism as an idea may stand for but how many feminists perceive women like her just take a quick scroll through this comment section and you’ll see many people invalidating her personality and demeanor as the result of the patriarchy and self deprecating
@pterocardio3 жыл бұрын
@@bluewescott4631 whether or not shes talking about how people who claim to be feminists perceive her, or feminism, she's still very ill-informed because if she took the time to sat down and talk to people who do actual feminist work, she would know that feminism does advocate for her as well, and that feminists aren't criticizing her for her traditional femininity, but rather the way she talks of other women and feminism as well. also idk i dont see many comments like those. the ones that i do see criticize her for her "not like other girls" behavior, which again isnt a criticism of her personality, buy rather how she thinks her personality is somehow above others.
@bluewescott46313 жыл бұрын
@@pterocardio i think that even if that’s the intent of the movement the amount of supporters who do not recognize and support that intent is great enough to where it has been erased in every impactful way and even though true feminists accept all women, the bulk of the movement, which is like all movements made up of people who don’t think for themselves (not that feminism is wrong, just that people repeat opinions and don’t form them), makes it so that the impact of the movement and it’s rhetoric does not accept traditional femininity
@pterocardio3 жыл бұрын
@@bluewescott4631 while i agree that there will always be people who dont understand what feminism stands for who skew the principles of the movement, i do not believe that is the majority. my issue with lana del rey's perspective of feminism and feminists is even early on she has excluded herself from the conversation, claiming that she'd much rather study the universe than feminism when she was asked about it. she has the privilege to exclude herself from feminist conversations and now she is claiming that women like her have no space in the feminist movement. she's very privileged and yet she posits herself as lacking in it simply because she is traditionally feminine, and that's really the crux of the criticism of many feminists towards her. and every time she gets criticized for it, she considers it as an attack towards her femininity.

Seeing at the point of feminism is that women are all judged, put against each other, taught to hate ourselves and our bodies etc, it shocks me that people get mad when a woman expresses she feels misunderstood. The whole “I’m not like other girls” thing makes no sense me personally, because while I can’t relate, I understand that some women/people feel genuinely different and outcasted by society. But once they actually embrace that difference and label themselves as “weird”, people genuinely ATTACK them for saying it. They often aren’t trying to say that they’re above other women. It’s just that people made THEM feel that they were different and isolated. I don’t get it...

As a white woman, it genuinely made me uncomfortable to hear her say "feminism needs a space for women like me". Her comments come from such a childish woe is me place and not as a comment about it. These 7 women she's mentioned have empowered women so much.
@harrypike51403 жыл бұрын
Her comment isnt about race though, take off the identity politics goggles that you Americans love to wear 24/7. She is talking about women who are traditionally 'feminine, girly, soft, etc. Ignoring ethnicity completely, her vibe is so different from someone like Cardi B or even Beyonce. And I'm not talking about skin colour. Presentation and aesthetic matters to our perception of people. We're obviously going to perceive Lana in a different way to Cardi B given that the latter is overtly sexual in her image and lyrics and shaking her ass, sticking tongue out and so on. Obviously Lana knows she is a pretty girl, but she doesnt use her sexually in an aggressive manner like a lot of POC women artists do. More softer less assertive women like her tend to get a bit undermined by the industry and by feminists. That is what she is referring to. And I mean, define empowering? Its not a one size fits all thing. Is WAP empowering? Not to a lot of women it's not! Alot of people find it gross, quite frankly.
@rampagingrexy72023 жыл бұрын
@@harrypike5140 if it's not about race then why did you mention POC creators specifically? This is exactly the point. You can comment on every person on here complaining but I'm assuming that you aren't a woman and can't actually understand what makes a woman feel empowered. Women can be empowered by anything and you're a moron if you're gonna sit here and say that they can't. And also someone like Lizzo is definitely a person who empowers women. Beyonce also. this isn't identity politics it's a statement of her blatantly using POC women to push an agenda that there's not more "soft" women. It's offensive and hurtful to those women and to all the women in the space. Also fuck off bringing up WAP. It's the first thing men go to to say women are "whores" and it's not empowering. Maybe, just maybe, women appreciate songs about their sexual experience that isn't just from the male perspective.

@@harrypike5140 traditional ideas of femininity in America are very tied to whiteness. @@rampagingrexy7202 go off, coomer. WAP, Lizzo and Cardi B are all gross. If you genuinely feel empowered by a song about wet vaginas then you need to look in the mirror tbh. It's not about gender. It's equally as cringe if a man was saying that a song with lyrics about hard penises is empowering to men. It's not. It's crude and immature. You can express your sexuality without nonsense like that. Better yet, be Sexual in your private life and not in everyone's faces.. I'm sorry Lana that sad girl vibes are your life but just like how your experiences are valid so are those of strippers, so are those of druggies, so are those of toxic relationships that thrive on sex. Don't invalidate another women's experience of being in the streets and stripping for money when that's what their story is and say that oh they're super popular for talking about sex when I'm trying to talk about real shit. It's very hypocritical to say the least.
@annabeinglazy55804 жыл бұрын
yh I was thinking the same thing there is literally no artist that hasnt been criticised. People have been bashing Jennifer Lopez and Shakira for their "sexual" performance last year and literally turned off the TV. Female artists singing about sex are somehow still seen as controversial and boundary crossing, which in itself is pretty sad to me, considering how many male artists have been able to sing about getting laid for decades by now. How often any artist is slut shamed no matter what outfit they were. Megan and Nicki have been slammed so often as if their music will turn girls into sex demons or sth. But sure, Lana is the only one who has ever been criticised of anything.

@-jg9pi4 жыл бұрын
I don't know about you but there is an entire branch of feminism that views women as a collective and therefore any decision a woman makes puts women down as a class. So to these people a woman singing about a traditionally feminine role is putting other women down. This is what happens when people don't think their ideologies through. Liberal feminism is more about individual choice, yes, but second wave and radical feminism is about women as a collective. That's why nobody bat an eye when Lorde said that Lana's music is unhealthy for young women or every music critic I watched said that she's a bad "representation" for women. Don't be so superficial when she said "look" like me the last thing that came to mind was her physical appearance. she seems a little bit like the type of outdated white feminist that wants to profite from feminism and feels like shes treated unfairly when she isnt. i get being bashed for your sexualitiy or your lyrics is horrible and definitely sexist and i wholeheartedly agree. but she acts like shes the only one or that she has it the worst, when in fact it isnt a competition in the first place (and it isnt - there may be different levels to discrimination, I mean a black woman would definitely have more disadvantages in life than her as a white woman). just, comparing the hatred/pain/criticism you faced because of your gender to other women, wording it that way? problematic af. not to mention that she kinda proved that she doesnt know much about feminism apart from the ways it would directly effect her anyways.
@lola51303 жыл бұрын
this is very well-worded comment! i couldn’t have said it better myself. i don’t think a lot of white women realize that whenever they are speaking about issues of inequality or sexism, or whatever it is- THEY ARE WHITE BEFORE THEY ARE ANYTHING ELSE. you are a WHITE woman fighting for feminism, you are a WHITE woman talking about your sexuality. it’s different. when lana sings a song most people can understand how it feels like to be in that position but it’s not the same for artists like mitski and sza. there is only so much a white person can empathize with songs from mitski and sza, because although they are talking about not feeling good enough to men, feeling like their efforts are unappreciated to society, they feel that way as women of color- something white women will never understand.

Raise your hand if you're the crazy neolib in the room? Of course we have to bring race into it, even though it literally has nothing at all to do with race...a north korean woman in north korea has it way worse than a black woman in the United States, in general, but seriously...what is your fucking point? The mental gymnastics you people go through to link everything to race, imaginary privilege and quite literally made up intersectionality must be exhausting...unless you're just one of the dumb ass "woke" playing follow the leader who doesn't even understand what your own terminology actually means, which is about 98% of you. Lana is popular with women everywhere because there's a very primitive undertone of the relations between men and women that most artists are unable to articulate. Since she lays it out on the table without man bashing, it's just not feminist enough for you. For a culture of inclusion, and by that I mean your liberalism AND feminism...you people sure are quick to point out when someone is too white or not quite feminist (or should I say angry) enough for your liking. You neolibs are the most close-minded, exclusionary group of jerk offs that have ever existed. You spend an awful lot of time congratulating yourselves for being "woke" while being so ridiculous that it's impossible to imagine any real change could come of any of it. You guys have done so much damage by preaching to extremes and socially castrating anyone who doesn't live up to you that YOU have driven real progress back 50 years. Normal people have no choice but to dig in and resist because you don't want meaningful change, you want your BS dogma. People like you are the reason I now lean conservative after 22 years of voting blue. Congrats on destroying yourselves from within.

As a Black woman who is also femme, I definitely think she has a good point about how femininity and softness need to be welcomed in the feminist movement. However, my problem lies in the fact that 1) she ignores the fact that femininity is already accepted in the feminist movement and that a large thing a lot of feminists are fighting for is the fact that femininity doesn't equal weakness*, and 2) she juxtaposes herself with mostly Black and Latina women(with the only white woman she mentioned, Ariana Grande, being a woman she clearly believes is a woman of color considering how she says she didn't include a 100% Caucasian woman in the mix), and describes them as overly sexual and "stronger" than her and taking away her voice, while casting herself as the more beautiful, sensitive, softer woman. In doing so, she reinforces the racial stereotypes of white women being delicate, feminine, and graceful, while Black and/or Latina women are all overly sexual, aggressive, masculine, and loud. She also uses her white woman tears to victimize herself in comparison to these women, and pretend that they, who have done and said nothing to diminish or demean her, are brutally silencing her voice and shoving her out of the feminist movement(while also somehow managing to compare them to men who hate women). Once again, casting herself as a meek and delicate lady in contrast to the aggressive, angry, strong Black woman. She places herself on a pedestal above them by describing herself as glamorous and feeling "embodied", implying that those women are not glamorous and don't sing songs about genuine love or heartbreak, or anything other than stripping, cheating, and sexual pleasure. Even though women like Beyonce and FKA Twigs exude femininity, grace, and elegance, she refuses to see them that way because of their Blackness. Her post could have been fine if she had merely spoken about her OWN issues instead of bringing down women she claims to be fans of. If she is actually their fans, then why didn't she hype them up??? If her problem is that women don't get to have a voice, why didn't she use them as examples of talented and successful women whose voices, like hers, also get erased and put down by the media(although ofc worse bc they're women of color, except for Ariana Grande). Why make it an us vs them where it's "those vicious ghetto Black Jezebels get to twerk and shake up their bodies and everybody applauds them, but when a sweet innocent white woman like me wants to make REAL music about love and tenderness I get attacked!!! Not fair!!!!!!" She's basically saying that Black women can't be as softspoken, feminine, or gentle as her, and are all slutty, promiscuous, rough, and masculine. THAT'S the issue(and also the creepy rape culture shit as you said). And that's why I don't like her. *I must also mention that Black women especially are the ones fighting for the right to be dainty, innocent, and soft because of how often it has been stripped from us through masculinizing and fetishizing stereotypes of the "strong Black woman" or the Sapphire, or the Jezebel. Which are all tropes that Lana del Rey is pushing and reinforcing in her comment, and which makes her dismissal to the criticisms all the more harmful. She needs to read a Racism 101 book before she opens her social media browser ever again, mmkay?

She wants to take them down a notch bc she feels like it's not fair that these women are getting awards, breaking charts, sustaining radio play, etc. while her so-called "marketable image" is outdated. Noah Ball she literally dragged them down by saying that “unlike them”, who sing about sex and stuff, aka unserious stuff, she writes about being embodied and having beautiful relationships, aka serious stuff. lana always gets shit ton of criticism for the music she makes and so has all the rights to speak out about that, but instead of exposing journalists and magazines who are the main problem she name dropped other women (including ariana, whom she had collaborated with), which was awkward and only showed her self-centered personality. she could’ve worded it a different way, really.
@stathiak3 жыл бұрын
She really tried to make it sound like she was admiring the artists she listed... she reduced their music to such superficial concepts, and even if it’s true, she juxtaposed herself as clearly better because she wasn’t singing about those same topics but instead was berated for singing about being a “delicate” (ugh the over usage of that word I cringe) woman. She really said I’m better because I don’t show off my body. Just let women do what they want. Ultimately I do think feminism is different for everyone because it’s about empowering women in however they feel comfortable with. No one said she has to be “strong,” but it is obviously a popular way for women to empower themselves right now because women have been forced or expected to be “delicate” and “fragile” for so many centuries as Lana describes herself. She can be a feminist in her passive and domestic self, but she shouldn’t bash other women for feeling sexually liberated in how they express themselves. She really has a superiority complex... I do like her music though. She just needs to understand that no one really cares about “making space” for “fragile women” in feminism because that’s been so widely accepted for so long. It’s not something women have had to fight for. But again, she can do whatever and be however she wants because if that’s what makes her feel comfortable and empowered so be it.
@o_o-lj1ym3 жыл бұрын
Are you saying that sex and stripping is bad? Lana used to sing about the same thing.
@imthebossmermaid36488 ай бұрын
"women have been forced or expected to be “delicate” and “fragile” for so many centuries as Lana describes herself." Except this is only the case for white women(like Lana). Black women have always been forced to be the "strong Black woman" who relies on no one but herself and doesn't have any emotions or vulnerability. It is also used to masculinize us because being strong is associated with masculinity due to sexism and it is used to say that Black women don't deserve to be treated with gentleness or kindness like other(namely white) women. So for Lana to label herself as more delicate and contrast herself with "stronger" women who "show off their body" and name majority Black women to do that, is incredibly racist and anti-feminist. You can be soft and feminine without being weak but in Lana's case she is just using that to uphold her white femininity and attack Black women by dismissing them, pigeonholing them, and stereotyping them.

I'm not even sure what a well-adjusted person is supposed to mean. To me, that's like kinda saying a person who's "normal" when what normal is could depend on who you ask. I'm sure there a plenty of people who would say she's "well adjusted". Not saying she is or isn't but that it's kinda subjective and based on personal perspectives.

Whether it was her intention or not: The fact that she describes black artists as perceived stronger, louder and more overpowering than her- who she describes as delicate and fragile is exactly the problematic stereotyping of black women as being less feminine and less deserving of gentleness. And it shows how much this idea is engrained in our minds as a culture
@gaygengar4 жыл бұрын
fucking EXACTLY ! she wants to pretend like it's a coincidence/outright ignore the fact that she threw a group of (mainly) black women under the bus by portraying them as aggressive, loud, uneducated, & unenlightened in order to make her, a white woman, look better, smarter, and more "in touch" with her emotions. & the fact that she sees accusations of racism as some kind of silly drama to scoff and roll your eyes at just proves how little she actually cares about racism as well.
@Charsy84 жыл бұрын
Yep. For someone who claims she doesn't care about feminism she's really desperately portraying herself as a white feminist.

How? Nobody mentioned race. People mentioning race when it’s not being talked about, is irrelevant to the topic, is ridiculous and trying to victimise people for literally no reason. You bringing race into this is racist.

John NoNameGibbon not all feminists are the same. the definition of a feminist is a person who thinks that men and women should be equal and have equal opportunities. *western feminism* however is very wrong. western feminists are women who believe that women should be treated BETTER then men, and often think things that aren’t sexist are sexist. feminism is not wrong. western feminism is, and is NOT feminism.

@@valpioppi8908 Literally not correct, your grouping an entire region of feminism together, and the few with loud voices to show the entire community or people with those beliefs. Ridiculous that you'd fall into allowing feminism to have a bad name

Honestly, calling herself “delicate” relative to the women she listed is inherently dangerous in itself in my opinion. She’s low key playing on the “angry black woman” stereotype, especially when she claims that her delicate voice is being silenced by “strong women.”

I don't know, in my personal opinion there is but it isn't something thats only found in women. I think it's largely about being afraid of conflict and disappointing people/wanting to be liked etc. It can easily make people think that your rejection is actually you being coy, since your body language, mimicry and tone of voice isn't matching up to your words. I've had people think I'm flirting when I'm really just uncomfortable. A no is most often a no but I think it's important to remember that humans communicate in more ways than just words and that you can't just always put all of the responsibility on someone else. I can see why people may see me as being flirty when I'm not, it wouldn't absolve them if they took something too far but it makes me more understanding and less likely to see them as a creep since I obviously sent out the wrong signals. Edit : I'd also like to put it out there that there are women, and men, who do say no in order to generate interest, a game of cat and mouse if you will. It's far from unusual.
