In my opinion, along with the lawsuit(s) damages, the officials who knew about the design flaws in the DC-10 at the time should have faced legal prosecution and been sent to prison for their willful negligence. Allowing the DC-10's to go into service knowing of the design flaws is nothing short of a criminal act. Something along the lines of 'negligent homicide' for playing fast and loose with of the people who were killed as a direct result of their utter failure.

Absolutely, they knew it would happen before the plane was even built. Then it did happen two years before and it was almost a crash, the pilots had just enough control to land the plane. It should have immediately grounded the planes(DC-10s) and engineered a better latch system at that time. They left the faulty door until a plane(DC-10) crashed.

so many of the air crash investigation type shows Ive seen seem to feature Definite Crash 10s or Massive Death 80s. there were some serious problems at that company. but aviation is traditionally a very corrupt business and the manufacturers have strong political influence, especially those involved in the production of military aircraft and technology.

@@richardstaccone1927 I don't think it's fair to say they knew it would happen. More like, they should have known it would happen, but they displayed a huge overconfidence. It was more delusional than willful, IMO. This is illustrated by the fact that had they known that the Paris crash would have happened, they almost certainly would have taken more steps to prevent it, as no company wants its biggest and newest project so horribly tarnished. The mechanisms that allowed this to happen were perhaps more indirect than is commonly thought.

Whiiny official voice: "Oh, but that model has flown successfully, with about 60000 landings all safely, so it's not a really big deal, especially since, in the first crash from this problem, everyone survived... blah blah blah" I don't know whether or not a jury would see it that way or not. But I do believe that everyone surviving the first crash gave the FAA folks false confidence. If the idiots had read that NTSB report, they would have seen that the survivals were due to an incredible job done by that flight crew. Incredible and awe-inspiring. I was a flight instructor in small aircraft such as Cessna 150s and 152s in the '70s and '80s, and was also able to sit in the jump seat of various airliners from '86 til my retirement. That gives me enough experience to be awe-inspired by that DTW aircrew. Wow. The first cargo door accident: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJmoYZyriMmBfqc

If the passengers get hurt they make no money and are quite likely to do bankrupt. What unsafe airline makes a ton of money? All of the most profitable airlines are the super safe flag carriers. Do they want to make money? Of course. Just like the average traveller will fly with anyone to save 10 bucks on a ticket.

I work in Aerospace manufacturing. The engineers may be responsible for the design but non-engineers in management often force these kinds of things. The metric F-ton of paperwork and expense of refurbishing tons of planes was probably considered too costly by management. I expect the following transcript I guesstimated to be at least 70% accurate. Engineer: "Okay after working with the FAA we have a solid set of solutions to implement so this never happens again. Here is my report." Management: (Flips thru report, skims first couple of pages) "Holy crap, we have to redesign the door... and the fuselage to match the new locking mechanism? And what the hell... we are going to have to rebuild all of the cabins to implement new venting? What is this all going to cost?!" Engineer: "Here on page 8 of the report I made a rough estimate of the cost of new engineering, re-tooling, and refurbishing of the existing planes in service. It's not going to be cheap but a plane nearly went down; we have to do it right." Management: "I need you to re-do this report and estimate. I can't authorize that size of expense." Engineer: "We've already put several weeks of careful consideration into what needs to be done while working with the FAA. There is no way around the door redesign at very least." Management: "Well wait, it says here the problem is with the baggage handlers closing the door the wrong way. Just stick a little window to check if the door is correctly locked, and a little C.Y.A. instruction plate for the baggage handlers - Problem solved!" Engineer: "Well that would make the accident less likely, but it doesn't actually prevent it from happening. We need to redesign the door lock mechanism - And The floor vents will fix the explosive decompression and loss of control problems. We've already discussed this extensively with the FAA and-" Management: "Well I want you to implement the easier fix. No way we are paying to re-do the floor and doors on hundreds of planes." Engineer: (I really DO NOT want to sign off on this - it is unethical and bad design.... But if I put my foot down they'll just replace me with someone who WILL sign off on this. Whatever I do the result will be the same... Even if they don't fire me this will limit my career here... God I fucking hate politics... I suppose what I choose doesn't matter but if another flight goes d-) Management: "I expect the revised report on my desk first thing next week... understand?" Engineer: "I... uhh... yes sir... I'll see what I can do" This is also, by the way, part of the reason GOOD engineers typically come off as "assholes" by many peoples standards. Some of the men I respect most in the industry are the ones who have the cajone's to tell management to go fuck themselves when it's the right thing to do. Engineer: "No, fuck you. I am not redoing the report. We have a plan cleared with the FAA and that's final. Fire me if you want but I WILL NOT sign off on a half assed fix. Do YOU Understand?" Management: (God he's such an asshole)

A book called "The Last Nine Minutes: The Story of Flight 981" was written about this over 30 years ago. Excellent book, it gives excruciating detail. The sickest part describes in detail what the emergency crews found when they arrived at the sight. The entire plane and all the passengers hit a dense forest of pine trees at over 400mph. The trees acted like a giant shredding machine, grinding the plane and passengers into bits. The book describes that the emergency crews collected ~ 20,000 body parts. When you divide that by 346 people aboard, you realize the average person was cut into 57.8 pieces.

@@email4ady Totally agree, the last words on a CVR should NOT be "but I've been pulling back the whole time" like AF447. With two yokes, the captain returns to the flight deck to SEE what's happening with the control surfaces and and the pilots can see and FEEL what the other is doing. Unbelievably APPALLING design that has killed and killed and the WORST thing about it is that automation has resulted in pilots who can't fly - some even PAY to fly - and who simply pull back on the joystick when they're stalling (AF447 and QF8501 are far from the only cases). *The other pilot should see and feel this and counter it immediately but the airbus design makes this impossible* 😥

I can barely buy anything in a box anymore because there are so many different languages printed on the package. But MD could not put a second or third major language on the aircraft beside a cargo door showing how to securely lock the door? Crazy. Pilots are required to communicate in English, but not tarmac personnel. MD failed to instruct aircraft support people in their native language. A second plane crashed due to the same door blow out cause, but this vid does not mention the secondary crash cause: loss of control surfaces. MD already knew that cargo door blowout would cause loss of controls, but failed to re-locate the controls to prevent that. The lack if concern and lack of action by MD was criminal.
@cchris874

The part about the door handler is a myth spread by MD to take the focus away from them. It wasn't the baggage handler's job to use the peep hole. He was warned never to force the door shut; and indeed he noted that the vent door closed more easily than usual that day.
@dfuher968

Plus, MD didnt send out a directive about the use of the peephole or warning about the cargo door problem. And, btw, the guy, who shut the cargo door that day is Paris, spoke 3 languages - English just wasnt 1 of them. Im adding that, coz theres always some ppl, who prefer to demean the baggage handler for being some idiot, who couldnt learn a foreign language, which, as u say, was also not a requirement for his job.

Excellent video. This particular DC-10-10 was registered TC-JAV and was the 29th DC-10 to be built. I still don't understand why McDonnell Douglas and FAA conspired to hide the great flaw in the rear left Cargo Door. As the control cables had been severed, the Aircraft was uncontrollable. Initially, when the door blew open, Six seats were sucked out of the Aircraft with six passengers still strapped in them. Their bodies were found soon afterwards together with bodies of other 340 people. A monument containing the names of all 346 people killed was built at the crash site. This was the largest death toll in a single Aircraft crash until surpassed by the crash of a Japan Airlines Boeing 747-46SR in 1985 which killed 520 out of 524 persons on board. The flight Number was JL-123 and the Aircraft was flying to Osaka from Tokyo, Haneda Airport. RIP all 866 persons who died in these two crashes.

@@dfuher968 You might (even after nearly 50 years) still find bits of those passengers who were torn into mincemeat and bone by their being smashed into tree-trunks as the fuselage disintegrated when it entered a forest of mature trees almost horizontally. Only the plane's engines were its recognisable parts. All because the company wanted to get ahead of its rivals in selling the planes. Someone should have hunted-down the firm's key executives and put them through what the crashed plane's crew and passengers had experienced.

Having scrolled down a bit, I see that some people have made disparaging remarks about the aircraft, which is understandable considering the way the Press crucified it. I flew it for four years out of which two were as its Chief Pilot and instructor. I really enjoyed flying that aircraft. It had excellent and responsive controls. It also had very well thought out procedures for emergency situations. The DC-10 was a very automatic aircraft with (for that time) state of the art avionics. However it was a delight to fly manually and I often flew it that way up to and down from 20,000 ft. If they were still around I would fly as passenger on one with no misgivings.

Simple lawsuits were not nearly enough. All the individuals at MD responsible for this should have been criminally prosecuted. Those found guilty sent to prison, where they could get what's coming to them. Stripping them of their assets will put the families out, to be sure. As I see it, tough as that may be, those assets, and the resulting standard of living thus obtained, was achieved as a result of the actions that led to the disaster(s). Using this approach will send the message far and wide, that when purposeful lack of corrective action occurs, the punishment will be severe Of course, the principal perpetrators are the ultimate decision-makers who had the ability to institute corrections, or block the corrections (like what happened in this case). Those individuals are the ones I believe must be targeted with criminal prosecution.

@sadiqjohnny77

The Chicago DC-10 crash was because of the AA using fork lifts to replace wing engines that had been worked on. This was illegal and the shock to the engine supports caused cracks that led to the engine separating from the wing. It was NOT MDs fault but the airline's. The engine that separated went forward of the wing and struck the leading edge. This caused the leading edge flap on that wing to retract. Sadly it also damaged the warning system that would have told the pilots about that. The aircraft was FLYING at the speed at which the engine came off. The DC--10 had a system, when an engine failed, of changing the bars on the Flight Director on the pilots' instruments to fly at V2 (the best angle of flight out to gain height quickly) instead of V2 + 10 knots. The left wing with the retracted LE flat stalled and the plane was doomed. If the pilot had maintained the normal climb out speed they would probably survived but he followed the bars. NOT his fault! I trained my students that, if their plane suffered an unusual situation (like a loud bang on climb out) maintain and increase the speed a bit if there are no obstacles that require a MAX climb, and the plane is climbing at 500 feet per minute or more. Accidents are a terrible thing but we should learn from them.

Their willful and negligent and reckless tampering with the door was required for this crash to happen. Not to say they were the primary cause, but their role has more or less been stamped out of the popular story.

Love your videos (including this one), but was there a reason for not mentioning that the 6 or 7 people sitting in that blown out cargo section got sucked out of the plane at 11,000 ft. falling to their horrific deaths (only to be found later, miles from the wreckage, with the victims still strapped to their seats)? Seems like a pretty important detail from this tragedy to leave out, considering how rare it is (and how frightening it must be) for people to fall 2 miles to their deaths.

They didn't want their reputation tarnished with a forced directive but still decided to only make a half-arsed voluntary change knowing that nothing damages an aircraft manufacturer's reputation better than a fatal crash coming from a known flaw. When you gamble like that you are playing with fire, or in this case, people's lives and it cost MD everything as they quickly lost market share to Boeing, Lockheed and the newly-formed Airbus.

The Boeing Max 8 is replacing the DC-10 as America’s most dangerous airline. Anyone else find it a coincidence that 346 people died in the Turkish accident and a total of 346 people died on a Max 8?
