Aliex, very nice job with your review. Here's my 2 cents for anyone considering Old Town Predator PDL vs Hobie: I've owned a Hobie Revolution for 12 years and love it. I decided to get an Old Town Predator PDL for a change and because of the ability to stand up, and ability to reverse. I had to sell it after two uses, and here's why. PDL is 117 lbs and way too heavy to load and unload in my truck for trips. PDL is very hard to pedal and I cannot keep up with the currents of the waters I fish in (2-4 knots). The advantage of the Hobie is the fin drives. They are much faster, and they tuck up under the boat to get into extremely shallow water. The first time I used my Hobie, I was out for 6 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. It's effortless and enjoyable. The PDL is a LOT OF WORK, and I think these boats should come with a warning label "not to be used in moving water". I would not recommend PDL to anyone unless they like to stand up, they have strong legs, and are happy going slow at the expense of a lot of effort.
@AliexFolgueira5 жыл бұрын
Actually I'm the opposite, I like the bike motion better, the Hobie drive after a while fatigue my legs, I could go all day on the bike motion syle drive. Good thing we have choices

If one of them steps it up to put an outboard transom mount on the back so you can use an outboard and then quietly use the pedals when you get to where you want to be, that would be a game changer. One of your best reviews. Both good kayaks but The Predator comes out in front on price, features and warranty. Having watched some reviews the Predator is a superior offshore boat. However a major negative of the Predator was it was way to easy to flip from that high seating position. They need a high/low seat. Hobie is lighter in weight and does have the seat height adjustment.

Also: on the gear tracks those funny rounded shaped openings in the Outback are IDEAL rod holders for me. At only 5’1” I can reach them effortlessly while unhooking a fish or rigging. On the drives, one thing you’re not mentioning is that if someone has any knee issues, the Mirage drive may be MUCH easier on their knees. I’ve had multiple surgeries on my ACL, MCL, LCL and meniscus, and I can do 4-6 hours on the water constantly pedaling with ZERO issues. I can only do about 30 minutes on a bicycle style drive before I’m in pain. The drive system is a HUGE differentiator.

In my location, there are no motors allowed on most bodies of water that allow kayaks. So that’s a non-option. Interesting about the hips...I have some hip issues too but have had no problems with the Mirage drive. Just did another long outing the day before yesterday. Can’t disagree that instant reverse would be nice but it’s not a dealbreaker for me personally. All of this is why demoing boats for yourself is an absolute necessity!!!

from what I've seen the current Outback hull design takes too much water over the bow. Consequently the front hatch takes in too much water and Hobie's answer was a second hatch seal. In short, you're gonna get a wetter ride in any chop on the Hobie. The Predator will deal with rougher water much better. I reckon you are better off on the Hobie in the shallows, but in deep water, especially inshore seas or ocean you want the OldTown under you. My main complaint about the Predator is that you cant lower the seat, so your in a high position, that affects your stability depending on your height and weight. Why OT didn't make the seat adjustable for height is a mystery?. If you leave your Outback in the baking Sun on the roof of your vehicle, watch it flex, but not the Predator, its significantly more dense/heavier, built like a tank. The OB hull still does the job and the mirage drive is a brilliant bit of technology but your gonna pay a hefty premium for it. If anybody outhere has extensive experience of both Yaks and can point to others issues, we love to hear it. AFAIK as of April 2021 OldTown has discontinued the Predator, so I guess a new design is on the way. Interesting review.

Your welcome Aliex . Just wondering , In your opinion , which one would you choose between the Outback , the Compass , the Old Town 2020 , or the Old Town Topwater 120 . We want a pair of Great kayaks and we want the best bang for the buck . Hobies are Really Great, but Man there right there at the crazy level for us . Even the prices just before there suppose of 20% Tarrif increase to was still a little pricey . We can see $2,500 , but $3,000 & $4,000. $6,000 - $8,000 for a pair of Yaks VS $ 5,000 . So just wondering your thoughts and opinions . We do want a pair of good / stable and comfortable kayaks as we can get . I'm just seeing if a Hobie VS a Old Town is well worth the extra . Awesome vid man. I personally did some research on the price spike for the Hobbie and according to what I’ve been told the reason for the price is because of the Chinese tariff that haven been imposed. According to one small business owner. Hobbie actually subsidized the tariff for a few months in order to keep the price competitive but about 2 weeks ago they told the authorized dealers they couldn’t absorb them anymore. Take it for what its worth.
