I think it's admirable that you post information intended to help others, but I'll echo several of the other commenters in saying that it really isn't necessary to take your car apart to replace a headlight bulb. I'm a fairly normal-sized western male, 1m80, with typical-sized hands, and I was able to replace both bulbs without taking the car apart or, as suggested by one commenter, moving the fuse box temporarily. It helps to do the one on the right side of the car first, then you become familiar with the principles involved. The one on the left side is much more difficult, but with patience and a lot of fiddling and a lot of swearing it finally works. One thing that I haven't seen noted elsewhere (maybe because it's obvious to everyone but me), is that you can easily see if the bulb is properly positioned by looking into the headlight.
@DansWay2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rennie, thanks for your comments. You are absolutely right that certain combinations of the Yaris seem to have more room than others between the headlight and fuse-box. Ours had about 1/2" of room, which wasn't enough to get the rubber boot and bulb around the corner. As I mentioned in other comments and the video description, the passenger side does have good access, so it is possible to replace that one without the full removal. It is advisable to replace both sides as a set, so I show both being done. I wasn't comfortable moving the fuse-box around myself, but the bumper comes off easily, and the light fixture can be removed which makes the process easy. If my daughter could do this in 30 minutes with my coaching, I figured it was worth showing others. I DO wish KZbin would allow for updates to a video after the fact with changes to the 'how-to' aspects.

The passenger side has much more room to work in compared to the drivers side, so it is quite possible to replace that one without the removal of the fixture. The drivers side has the fuse box located right behind the bulb, so close it is really hard to get the boot off. You can try working on the passenger side after watching the video to understand what is required, and then try working on the drivers side to see if you can get the boot off and bulb off without removing the fixture.

(And, yes, it's worth the few extra minutes to pull your bumper out if you're replacing the driver-side bulb.) One tiny note: there's no need to remove the plastic rivet from the passenger-side wheel well. Yeh the Yaris is a great little vehicle. Not too pricey. Great on fuel. Very reliable as well IMO. My 2008 has given me no trouble whatsoever over the past 12 years. I've only ever had to perform routine maintenance like changing the oil, tyres, brake pads on one occasion & a belt or two. Oh yeh... and the headlight bulb. Well, we can only wish they'd made it a little easier to perform a simple light bulb change. But it's all down to the compact design philosophy I suppose. In my old Holden Commodore it was just a matter of reaching around to the back of the headlight module. Plenty of room. No fuss. I don't know whether it was really necessary to make the rear of the Yaris headlight assembly so inaccessible, just to keep things compact. Maybe other manufacturers have done better. But like I said it's a great vehicle. We have to take the good with the bad.

Had to use a flat head and dig it up the bottom of the gasket where the bulb sits before it finally came off. I wouldn't expect you to need to replace the connectors or black rubber cover.

My Scion xA is the same.....actually no surprise as the cars are nearly identical mechanically. The term you're looking for is that the "bumper cover" needs to have it's top clips removed to allow juggling the top portion to swing forward and slightly down to gain better access to the headlights (housing) and bulbs. Same deal.....easy enough to lift the center of the retaining "plugs" ( 2-piece, the center needs to first be lifted "up"...with a screwdriver blade, then the bottom piece pops out. If you simply pop them out from the bottom piece, without first prying up the center, you RISK breaking the whole push-in plug). Need to remove these plugs and THEN look at the ENDS of the bumper cover as they wrap around toward the wheel-well. Then lift back slightly the black plastic inner fender splash guards, and remove the vertical (pointed UP) screws that hold the ends of the bumper cover on,,,one on each end. At this point the whole bumper cover can tilt forward/down like it's on a hinge. Not all that difficult if you know all this....just a bit of a hassle.

Thank you for this video. For my Yaris model 2009 I did not have to remove the headlight to replace the lamp on the passager side. But your video helped to do it. The driver side has less space so I know what to do when that lamp dies.
@andree1826 жыл бұрын
guys, do a v2 of this video... the working area is in fact quite small, but once you know where the metal tabs are and how to pull them (figured it out from your video details, thanks! :)), you don't really have to remove the light assembly... for me it was 2x 2 minutes job actually (both H4 bulbs) :) cheers...

This was so easy. Much easier than changing a bulb in the lamp in the house when I need to unscrew it and screw a new bulb in. Like who has just laying around a panel popper and a giant box full of body clips?!?
@AdamBarus5 жыл бұрын
This video is funny because you dont have to take anything apart. Just simply change the bulbs 🤣, the hand can be fitted there (not easily but its possible). Changed two bulbs in 4mins.

I really liked the Dad-daughter spin here and I'm so glad so many of you found this helpful, but I need to say the method described in the video is way over the top. All you need to know is pull the plug, remove the gasket, unclip, replace bulb, and reverse. No need for any tools let alone any removal of bumper or headlight assembly.
@DansWay Жыл бұрын
Hey Nikolai’s, thanks for the comments. It is true that some cars seem to have enough room to pull off a replacement without this effort. Other years/models of this car have nearly no clearance between the bulb and fuse box (our situation) which is why we chose to remove the fixture. The passenger side for sure doesn’t need to removed as the video description discusses.

Whats the kit for the clips can you link?

This works, but pivoting the small fuse box out of the way is less work for the passenger side. For the driver side, remove the battery before pivoting the main fuse box out of the way.

PSA: both lights can be replaced without disassembling anything. It’s a bit tight but I have pretty big hands and was able to manage fairly easily so most people should be fine.
@davidbarker31962 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was just logging in specifically to say this. The folks in this video seem like great, friendly people, but unfortunately the method they demonstrate is WAY too much work! I worry that people are out there doing the headlight bulb replacement this way--possibly causing more damage to their cars and not knowing what to do about it--when in reality this is LESS THAN a 5-minute job requiring no tools at all. :(
@davidbarker31962 жыл бұрын
You are correct; there is no disassembly needed at all if you are only replacing the bulb, and that is by design. There is no need to free the entire headlight assembly unless you are replacing the headlight assembly itself.

Just letting everyone know that it is the 2nd time now that I replace the headlight bulb without going through all of this. It is a 2010 yaris sedan and you can do everything in 5 minutes no need to take off the bumper… i don’t understand why you can’t simply squeeze your hand in and do it instead of this.

If I were you, wear plastic gloves, pay extra for long life bulbs and replace all the other bulbs I saw in the headlight. They are only $3 each. The FHSC should not certify a car requiring this much repair for a required safety feature. Subaru, for a few years, had headlight bulbs burning out 4 - 8 months. Replacement required the front wheel removal + an hour labor. It got so bad they had a special LL bulb made and subaru did it for free or the FHSC was going to make it a recall. My 2019 Rav4 has a 14 year LED headlight (as rated by hours of use).

U don't actually need to remove any piece from the car, just unplug the bulb, take the rubber out, unlock the clip, remove the bulb, put new hulb, secure the clip, put the rubber back in and plug the bulb

Great video. Thanks to you, I managed to do this work without a hitch, EXCEPT, you probably should have stressed that the reason you used new push pins is that the old ones really aren't reusable, despite the fact that they're supposed to be. ;-) I got caught out by that, as I didn't have replacements. Still, Toyota dealers can get them in quick and cheap. Thanks again.
