Sounds like SIU. Not the way I would go if I had the money to pay for training. But if you can't afford the thousands of dollars for all the classes you need this is a very good place to go. It also seems that you get a little preference in the SIU hiring hall.

I'm not sure if you go into it, but I graduated from Cal Maritime. You do a little, but partially it is to take it seriously but "boot camp" exists for a few reasons. 1: It takes that long to literally retrain your brain to cause new habits. 2: It IS about taking it seriously. Self-Discipline is key. Being a Mariner is very much a self-starting role. When you are a watchstander, you are responsible for a lot, and you NEED the self-discipline to be able to show up on time, and prepared. the 4-year License Academies operate very similarly, just the schooling takes longer. Also, this type of career isn't for the faint of heart, to the same point, they want to make sure you're serious about it.
@crishnaholmes773011 ай бұрын
Do you recommend someone do maritime four year school or is an apprenticeship okay
@hengineer11 ай бұрын
@crishnaholmes7730 depends on the goal. If your goal is to become a licensed officer, I would recommend a Maritime Academy. They "shortcut" the process, but, unless you get a congressional appointment to the Service Acadmey (Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point), they do cost money to go to. Some ARE part of state University systems, so there are avenues (CMA is part of CSU, for example) for financial aid and assistance. However being a licensed officer IS a huge responsibility many don't truly appreciate until theyre put into that role. E.G. if I did something wrong while sailing, it reflects on MY license which means (depending on the offense) loss of license, monetary fines or even jail time. Even if the Chief Engineer directed me to do something, I, as a licensed Engineer, should have known better and protected my own license. If all you wish to do is have an adventurous career, go places and do things people don't even dream of doing, and make pretty good money doing it, with no plans to attempting to becoming an officer (or perhaps you do and just don't have the funds), there is nothing wrong with starting out with Apprenticeship programs. If you wish to aim for licensed officer(deck or engine) it's possible it just takes longer.
@hengineer11 ай бұрын
@crishnaholmes7730 long story short there js nothing wrong with Apprenticeship programs, especially if youre starting out from scratch. If your goal is licensed officer, it just takes longer. I will say, take charge if your own career and kept abreast of regulation changes. The sheer amount of endorsement and license requirement changes just in MY time sailing was nuts. I havent sailed since 2018 so I really don't know what it is now.
