One thing most folks don't know is that when you raise your hand to the Coast Guard to get your first USMM card, you enter a contract for life to assist the USA in time of need. You can be called out for service at any time. It has happened, 70 yr olds were called during the Kuwaiti war. They can call me but I;ll probably need to be carried up the gangway. I loved sailing, though. I have a Class A tankerman endorsement and moved a lot of petrochemicals back in the day.

Wow, you answered a lot of questions in a short amount of time. Most of the guys that do these you tube videos spend more time talking about themselves and other nonsense, that I usually don't even watch the whole video. Great job.

Hey you! I went through all of your videos that have to do with shipping! You're wonderful! Thank you so much for being an inspiration. I'm trans, And I've only sailed in boy mode up until now. Headed back out after the first of the year. I know tons of female sailors, but until recently, never had any reason to ask them about their experience. If I had, I imagine that would have been kind of a weird conversation, lol! Thank you so much for sharing yours. Be safe and I hope to see you out there someday 💜

I literally jumped into this process of getting my card after working as a grain inspector for USDA. I thought it would be as simple as getting my CDL, I didn't realize I had to be attached to someone and work under them until I had enough loads to take test.

Hi I was wondering if you could do another Q&A. I am curious about the people who steer the ship e.g. qualifications and training, how do you get exercise on the ship and eat healthy? Also, when you are out at sea for 4 months does that mean you are stopping in different places or that is travel time etc. Finally, how many seamen does it take to be aboard a ship like that? And can you do the pros and cons of being a seamen on a freight ship vs cruise. Thanks very interesting.
@miltonlegendre20243 жыл бұрын
What you do for your free time is up to you and the ship you are assigned to. Many people learn new things in their spare time, such as a language, musical instrument, photography, doing vlogs, whatever your imagination can come up with. Keeping fit and eating healthy is also up to you. There is healthy and unhealthy food how much and what you decide to eat is up to you. Hint: don't have junk food in your room. Some vessels have nice workout rooms and some don't have any. But, its up to you to workout with what you have. Some vessels have a nice workout room and few people take advantage of it. I have worked with guys who do a lot of body weight exercises such as push ups, squats, lunges, planks, and the such.

lol SIU.. still have the red probationary B books huh? Good times.. yep that weight is from the Coast Guard its a safety issue in case something as an emergency and they have to move you through the ship.

Thank you for your videos! I have questions specific to your taking time out to go back to college. I am interested in the SIU program but might need to take a year+ off to do an unrelated study program down the road. Do you have to resign after a certain length of time not taking a ship? What all do you have to do to be active again after a year plus of being off a ship? You mentioned having to pay for your own classes for certification out of pocket. If you dont mind sharing, about how much do you expect that to be? Just trying to get a basic picture for future reference. Thanks again!

Rock on! I just got off a MSC ship was quarantined to the ship for months. Very cool you finished college, I'm looking into San Jacinto College they got a maritime program that will accept USCG courses for college credits (not ACE and definitely accredited). Almost ready to leave MSC and I'm looking at AMO or MMP Union now :) wanting time off with MSC is terrible!

thank you so much for making these, they've been so helpful! I was wondering, do you know anything about the mental health requirements to join? for example, could someone with autism or other mental health problems join, or would it be case by case, or an automatic disqualification? hope you're doing well :)
