The comments about how he was a "tortured soul" and "like a child" don't do Mr Johnston justice. He was a human man with very human problems: heartbreak, mental illness, loneliness. He wasn't some unknowable saint. He was painfully, beautifully, openly human, and that shines through in his work. An artist through and through. Putting people on a pedestal dehumanizes them just as much as putting them down does, and Mr Johnston's humanity is perhaps the most characteristic, touching thing about his art.

It's been a while since I went out of my way to commend someone for an incredibly insightful and well written comment. Daniel himself and his friends/family have made it abundantly clear that he didn't want attention derived from pity just as much as he didn't want to be regarded as a saint or a genius for his work. He was unapologetically human with his own set of demons and he spoke to the human condition, relegating him as a "tortured soul" or just having "childish innocence" dismisses his work as just neurotic babble or naivety. Thank you for recognizing that!

This might be the most heartbreaking thing. He looks like he finds it difficult to even be inside his own body, and the saddest part is it's these type of songs he wrote when he was a teenager about how he was going to get to the other side of all his anxieties and heartbreaks and pains and find the love of his life but he never did and yet he's still singing those songs 😞

AIRBOY ADVENTURES yeah it must have been. Maybe if you watch the documentary you’ll see his criminal past. He didn’t mean any of it of course he was having mental break downs left and right which is heart breaking. He made an old woman jump out of her two story apartment building and she broke her leg because he was convinced she was a demon and she thought he was trying to kill him. He also almost killed his old manager by hitting him on the head.

You guys do not what it is like for me to watch this. Danny was my teenage friend. I used to stay all night at his house and he would stay at mine. We would hang out in his parents basement which was his place. He would sit and draw with me at a table and play the piano. I would strum along with my guitar. To know him then how he was (Like he was on the MTV appearance) and to see him like this is heart breaking for me. The last time I seen him was in New Orleans at his show. He wasn't looking at me and his brother Dick took me back stage. I said Mr. Johnston I am a big fan of yours. He looked up and said, "John you got big!" We talked about those years together and he remembered things I had forgotten about. We talked about the tape he made me and how things were for my home life and when he brought the tape to my house. We gave each other a big hug and he walked off to leave the theater. Seeing him so far gone from the Danny I knew was horrible for me. I wanted to help him be that guy again, but there was no way for that to happen. I know I will see him again when it is my turn to leave and he will be that Danny.

I struggle with similar issues to Daniel. Reading this has me crying. I haven't been able to keep connection with anyone in my life because of my mental health but I hope all my friends know they left an impact, I miss them, and I hope them the best. I hope I left something to help as they did to me.

@@farthead2023 Believe it or not, we are all struggling. Life is not easy for anyone. You work your life away for low wages while the cost of living keeps going up. People cannot afford to pay rent or buy groceries, or pay their utility bills. Be at peace and do not focus on what is wrong, but focus on what is right. Keep your mind occupied with healthy thinking thoughts, don't allow negative thoughts in. We all have the Love of God and his son Jesus who never leaves us or forsakes us. Just trust in him and be happy he has our backs. If you have a roof over your head and a place to sleep and take a shower and food to eat, you are doing great. Get your mind interested in something you like. Read a book about it and try to enjoy what you have learned, learn a new language and make new friends that speak that language. The library is free. Go learn about turtles, flowers, cold fusion, trees, insects, learn to play an instrument. The truth about friends is you are a rich man if you can count on one hand a true friend. Friendly doesn't mean your friend. People I thought were my friend have stabbed me in the back after knowing them for years. The song tells us that, true love will find you in the end. Jesus.

@@farthead2023 I totally related to Danny, because we grew up in the same place. In West Virginia were we lived you were judged on what you had. People looked down on you as you were a no body. Danny being an artist and being able to draw got him attention and I played rock and roll songs from bands in that era. It made us friends. One thing I can tell you and I hope you will understand is this. Danny was a Christian also. We are just visitors living on a planet owned by God. The Bible is an instruction manual that tells how he made all of this and how he is and what we as humans did to mess it up. The second book is how we can escape judgement. Understand you are never alone. God has our backs and says I will be a lamp unto your feet, I will guide you. I truly have had mircles happen in my life I could tell you about. He says I will never leave you or forsake you. He does exactly what he says. SOmething bad happens in my life, God turns it around and means it for good, because he always has our backs. I promise you if you will pick up a Bible,( I like the King James on and think it is the only correct one ) and pray and ask God to help you understand what it is you are here to learn, he will make things happen for you so you get an understanding of your life and why you are here. On Earth, true friends are hard to find. You are a rich man if you can count a true friend on one hand. I have known people for years and had them stab me in the back, but one true friend that has never betrayed me is God. He always looks out for me and takes care me, despite what the world is trying to do to me. In this song Danny is telling people to step out into the light, I believe he was saying the light of God and accepting Christ to take our place for the sin nature we inherited. That true love we will find in the end is God. One of my favorite Bible versus is " Eye has not seen or ear heard or mind conceived the things that wait for those that love me." Look at how beautiful this earth is. All the beautiful places and creatures great and small in the ocean and woods and jungles, the mountains. Who could have thought of such a creation but God? People spend trillions of dollars to go out into space and look at what they find.. rocky, lifeless planets. Im sure God made more than what he allows us to see and have access, People are the only thing wrong on this planet. The sin of mankind is what ruins it. We know through science that there are billions of planets in our Milky way Galaxy and there are billions of galaxies with billions of planets. So my word to you is this. Don't count on mankind, you will get let down. Count on God because if he is for you, no man can be against you. Get up, go outside and look at the beautiful planet he created and learn about it as much as you can. Read his instruction manual and do what he says. Lean not on your own understanding, but acknowledge his ways in everything you do. Once you belong to him, he will never let you go. Realize our life will end in this dirt made body and the real life begins after this earth one where we decay. Look up and pray and have a relationship with God and accept his son dying for us. Focus on learning about him and watch your life change.

Let go of the sad and listen. With all of his obvious struggle, his voice is possibly more on key than it was in his youth. Compare this to other performers who are aging without his challenges. Their voices are deteriorating. They are killing themselves with drugs and alcohol (some literally). Look at those like Syd Barrett who we lost, disappearing into obscurity due to illness, and be thankful and proud of Daniel for continuing to create and perform for us. Whenever I see or hear him performing, I think he's not just gifted. He, himself, is a gift.

Hell is easy to get into heaven is more tricky pretty much stop listening to worldly music, film's, TV and pretty much everything that changes ones mind from sober and do not fornicate and accept Jesus Christ as lord n saviour and you are good to go remember Jesus Christ died for our sins so no matter how dirty you get you are only 1 prayer away from salvation. It sounds hard to do but when you take yourself out the world you realise you was stuck in the satanic hive mind agenda and you will ask yourself how did you let yourself get so deceived but fear not Jesus Christ is patiently waiting for us to repent and come back to him. Tardive dyskinesia is a form of parkinsons amd psychitric medications that are prescribed for conditikns like bipolar and schizophrenic can cause it. I also like poor Daniel was on high doses of lithium carbonate. As well as Risperdal, Haldol, Seroquel, Depakote, Saphris, Lamictal, and many many others that are horrible but people with these conditions like us have to take them. Im also on parkinsons meds. Cause i also would have this shake. Its so bad. I wish it on no woman or man. I hope Daniel is in a MUCH much better place, and he deserves it after the hell he endured. Daniel was a rare gem. On the one hand, just barely hanging on as musician in the trained, practiced sense of the word. A rudimentary musician. But he could turn a phrase and create a unforgettable melody with the best of them. And while his singing is frayed and battered here he has a great sense of timing. A real genius.

This man went on to live his whole life without having a care in the world, about what anybody thought about him and didn’t hold him back from fulfilling a life making music, he was truly passionate about. Making influences and leaving an impact on so many people throughout time and more to come. That is a true genius. RIP Daniel Johnston.

Far too often the term "musical genius" is foisted upon those undeserving of the honor -- DJ was one of those very few who truly deserved this acknowledgment and much more than he got during his too-short lifetime! The tears I weep when I listen to his music are a mix of sad and happy ones: sad for what we lost when he died last year but happy for having been alive while he was so I got to hear his music and see him perform it live! He was a rare gem, and those of us who were lucky enough to know of him and his music are blessed beyond words to have his music and understand his gift!

Every love song was written about one girl he had as a classmate in his early teenage years. She ended up marrying an undertaker. Daniel was one of the most gifted, interesting, raw, real artists of my lifetime.
