Best show I've seen in NYC, maybe 2007. At a point in the show, Daniel Johnston sat down on the stage and got quiet. He stopped stopped singing. We all had heard about this kind of thing in his performances when he stopped, the show was cut short, and it was over. Everyone looked around at each other, wondering what they were supposed to do now. A few people sat down, and then little by little, we all did. We were on the same level as him. Waiting. After 5-10 mins or so, he started singing again. It was the most connected experience I've had at a concert. I will remember it forever. It's hard to put into words but it was so humble and sweet.

I have never cried at a piece of media until i heard this song. I've seen so many movies and felt bad for characters, but never actually broke a tear. But learning about how awful johnston's early life was and then hearing this is totally different. It's so clumsy and awkward, but its such genuine optimism from someone who was dealt such an awful hand in life. I can hear him wanting to convey this message by any means he can, even if he's not equipped with all the conventional knowledge of writing music. He just wants to share his hope that bad. And the fact its so flawed makes it feel so much more human. Its so beautiful and heart breaking at the same time. May Daniel rest well, cause i consider him a legend.

There’s something very endearing about the lack of perfectionism he has in his music, he just plays his songs because he absolutely loves doing it. He doesn’t care if it sounds kinda sloppy, or if his instruments aren’t tuned right. It’s like he becomes completely apart of whatever he’s playing, and all of his imperfections let his soul and emotions shine straight through the music, like sunlight shining through a dirty, broken window, but the window’s physical state represents decades of experience and circumstance, making it a beautiful symbol as well. Rest In Peace, Daniel, you were a very special person.

The first time I played a song in front of others was during my sophomore year of high school in a German class talent show. I sang this song with a shitty ukulele. It was a fairly awkward stage of my life and I was really nervous going into it. To my surprise everyone seemed to like it and I left feeling I had done the song justice. From then on I've been much more comfortable playing for others, even though it's rare for me to do so. Rest in peace Daniel, and thank you for what you have given

I wrote a portion of my university dissertation about Daniel and his influence on the Austin indie music scene when he first moved there and started performing. There was a beautiful section in a book I read, "Hi, How Are You?", which talks about how at the time, a lot of indie music was very ironic, very sardonic, and very subtextual. But when Daniel first stepped up in an Austin club and played his honest, sincere songs, the crowd was absolutely captivated. He was the first one to sing honestly and genuinely, with no facade of coolness or fake intellectualism. He was just a pure, beautiful soul, singing his heart out. RIP Daniel, and thank you.

As I watched, I thought to myself, "his music sounds really boring, how can anyone like it?" but continued watching. At the end of the documentary after I watched his story and his struggles, they played his song "Some Things Last A Long Time" and it just struck me in a weird emotional way. Many years later, that song suddenly just slipped into my head and made me go back and look through Daniel Johnston's work (and love it). Strange. Some things really do last a long time.

Once in a while, a pure and divine message is broadcast into this universe from that somewhere else, which pierces through your soul and touches that buried and undisturbed part of you; the part that is the connecting link to everything else. This is one of those messages. In no tangible way is this song special. But there is an ineffable quality there that makes it unbearably powerful. Few ever find a route into themselves that goes deep enough to pull something like this out, and fewer still have the courage and ability to convey it. Thank you, Daniel. Rest easy...

This is my favorite song in the world. I didn't live a good live, obviously nothing compared to his live, most of my suffering is due to my own bad decisions. But this 2 minute long song makes me wanna live until true love does find me, i don't know if ever will and, if it does, i don't know if will be enough, but for 2 minutes none of us was alone. We all felt the honesty in those words. I remember the day i found this song, i had never cried because of music before, but, once i saw the title and his face, i just started crying and i knew that it would be with me throughout all the bad times. This is my very first youtube comment, nothing ever felt worth sharing and inglish is not even my first language, so i apolage for all the grammatical mistakes. If you read this until the end i hope true love does find you.

Congac Bodean Yeah but Daniel Johnston never married, never had a real girlfriend, likely never even had sex before, and lives with his parents at 54 because he can't really live on his own due to his crippling mental illnes (he's diagnosed as both bipolar and schizophrenic). It makes the song that much more sad to me, wondering if Daniel still holds out a hope of finding true love, even with his situation, at his age.

+Relatively Santos : Hee hee...nice play on words. But, yes I did. It's been four years now and I can say without a shadow of a doubt I have never been happier. On another topic...maybe you can help me with this. Why am I getting a lot of random action on my comment. None of it seems related to my posting...except yours. Sounds foolish, but I am at a loss since youtube changed the reply system. Thanks in advance for your feedback. Tom.

people work so hard trying to write music like a child, and he definitely does it. its so genuine.
@strangebrew1231 Жыл бұрын
I think it’s because in many ways he was a child. His mental illness never really allowed him to grow into his own adult. He never had a relationship beyond platonic friendship

I had never heard of this guy or this song or anything. It was just a KZbin suggestion. This made me cry.

The reason why this song is so heartbreakingly sad is because deep down everyone knows true love sometimes never finds you.
@IsaacAutumn2 жыл бұрын
I feel, the reason the song is sad is because people even need to be reminded that there will always be people who love you
@fantometriste1080 Жыл бұрын
it will and i think that's what makes us cry, that despite everything that hurts you can suddenly realize you don't have to suffer and that it will get better and you feel releived and silly for all that useless pain and grateful for daniel for reminding you of such simple things!

I know I'm not exactly qualified to say so, but I think you're wrong. I believe that love is inescapable really, it's part of being human. It doesn't have to be romantic or platonic or even familial. It is universal.

I only wish this song was longer. I can't explain why but i love this so much. It's sweet and sad and hopeful (something about that line "don't be sad, I know you will" that just cuts me right to the core). I'm so glad I found this song and at the same time I really want to cry I think.

jawtek82 you don't get it and never will. Maybe this guy lost someone important or a true love. So my advice to you is. Keep listening to your crap music And leave.
@jawtek826 жыл бұрын
Your advice is about as good as this song. How many have not lost someone important? But we don't all cry at childish, un-musical, drivel like this song - and certainly not "most times [we] hear" it.
@jonnyl54426 жыл бұрын
jawtek82 Un musical drivel is your main choice of music! if you cannot appreciate the chord progression and timing, and tuning of this song. And everybody deals with it. You just chose to type up a dumb comment. Just go back to your top 100 billboard songs and keep thinking your a good person.

i saw the moldy peaches in london last night and while we were waiting for them to come out, they played this over the speakers. this song has been in my life for years and i treasure it like a friend. i was in a lot of pain and feeling kinda overwhelmed by the amount of people flooding in, but the second this played i felt all the uncertainty and anxiety in my body dissipate. i just can’t explain how it makes me feel - it’s like a hug.

This is the first time I've ever heard Daniel Johnston and I couldn't help but shed some tears listening to this. I know a little bit about his background and his struggles with mental illness and such, and I found out he passed away through these comments, which made me kinda sad. But I wanted to share my thoughts on this song. Listening to this reminded me of a heavy shroom trip I took where I experienced ego death, I had died in my trip and it was one of the scariest, yet beautiful experiences I have ever felt. I was very scared because the dying felt so real to me, but the beauty I experienced after I died was soooo overwhelmingly beautiful, I felt such good feelings and could see beautiful colors and visuals, it felt better than any love or beautiful emotion I could ever feel, and I can't help but feel like this song speaks to me in that sense. Maybe it's not love through other people that we find in the end, but rather true love we experience from something more, from the entities/energies in the universe that we cant see but can feel. Maybe when we die we get enveloped in a type of love that we dont understand as we are living, but when we die it all makes sense. I cant help but feel like it's the ultimate peace, and this song speaks to me and makes me feel like Daniel Johnston understood this, and maybe that's what he was speaking on, "true love will find you in the end" It may not be true and my comment may just be more ramblings of a madman, but I find this soooo beautiful, and I really do hope we all find true love in the end. Peace and love be with you all if you made it this far.

Many artists and musicians have had that magic touch that gave us beautiful memories, effortlessly casting masterpieces that enriched our souls and beyond any doubt, made our lives more fulfilling , deep and worthwhile. We are so lucky to be alive to experience them... there are far too many to list here. So I will highlight Johnston. Beautiful standards set by a loving spirit. Did we deserve him?!! I like to think we did, those of us that gave back to him by listening and marvelling at his talent! Thank you Daniel, you are one of the most awe-inspiring, prodigious artists that we were all fortunate enough to share this planet with. A top shelf loveable, magnificent human being. I hope you have found peace and are resting happily in her arms. 8^) Cheers Buddy!!!!!!! Long live DJ!!!

Daniel johnson was a person who had such a hard life the battles he had to go through everyday in terms of his mental health must of been so painful and tormenting so the way he still managed to find an escape for it with his music even if it was for a short while and its just him recording it on a cassete player at home it was his way off showing who he was as a person in terms of the songs the titles of the songs, the artwork it was just so raw and real and im glad the world got to hear it in some capacity

There are many others that feel like you. I would like to think that we are all looking for each other. You are a beautiful soul because that's the only kind that God made; it's the mind and the body, and most certainly the world that gets in the way of the heart. Keep looking up. True love is yours to be had.

I dont think a single song has ever made me actually cry. I never cry, I've watched movies and listened to many sad and beautiful songs, watched beautiful videos on KZbin that also jerked a tear from me. But this made me cry instantly, its so genuine and beautiful. True love, that search that we search so frantically for in life. That which if most people stopped to look around would realize they have through friends and family. Some of the comments talk about this song from the perspective that Daniel was singing about romantic love and only that. Even if it was, it only makes the song more tragic in such a genuine way: he couldn't see the love of his own parents who he seemed to disdain in earlier years. Such a simple, beautiful song holy shit Edited because I realized I forgot to include words which would make this paragraph make sense
