Daniel Komen is one of the most interesting distance runners in history: he has some of the most impressive Personal Bests from 1,500 meters up to the 5000 meters, but he only performed to the best of his ability between 1996 to 1998.
To this day, he still holds the world record for the 3000 meters (indoors and outdoors) and the 2 mile.
He is the only athlete in history to have run a 2 mile race in under 8 minutes. Yes, 2 miles, in a row, under 4 minutes each.
Thanks for watching!
Enjoy!

I remember him as a kid when I first started running in 1996. The battles between him and Haile Gebrselassie were epic. They should make a 'Legends of Running' video game where you could play as runners like El Guerrouj, Ngeny, Komen, Gebrselassie etc. It would be a great tribute. Those were the best times (late 1990s) to be a fan and to witness all distance running world records broken. :)

@@tedallison6112 Career longevity is a pretty important factor in determining greatness, especially with the rise in the dominance over the East African runners, world records are getting broken left and right now, especially off people who aren't that well known (such as Samuel Tafera). I do understand what you're saying in that someone achieving a high level in athletics shouldn't be brushed off because someone only dominated for a few years. However, I think career longevity is important in making an athlete more memorable, it might not be a huge factor, but it is still a factor that makes an athlete greater than others.

Great video on a great athlete. I remember him well but I still forgot how impressive his range was from 1500m - 5k. These times would easily stand out today. @@joan7446 I think he was capable. Bekele could have done it too. They just needed better pacing. When Bekele ran 12:37 his splits were Uneven and all over the place. He had to sprint to finish which means he has way more left in the tank. After that he really didnt try to break it again. He just focused on Cross country. 12:30 was possible. Very nice series, but there is a little mistake at 0:23 : there have been more than 2 people to go under 13:00 for 5k, under 7:30 for 3k and under 3:30 for the 1500. Those that I know are Hicham El Guerrouj, Bernard Lagat, Said Aouita, Ali-Said Sief and Daniel Komen himself. This is truly an amazing achievement, it's hard to imagine pulling it off anytime soon. Mo Farah was close, strangely, he's only missing the 3k time.
